I don't hate it all. I just dislike artists like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. I also hate hip-hop sung by young kids that try and act cool. I want to try and rip my ears off listening to those.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! What Escapist have you been reading? Is there an escapistmagazine.co.uk or something!?

Aaanyway, OT - I don't hate Popular Music. Some of it's alright, and I'm not enough of a bleating drone to hate something irrationally without giving it a chance. Hell, I've even found myself whistling some N-Dubz after listening to them to get some music for a project. That's some catchy shit, yo, dawg?

It burns a hole into your head using catchy, repetitive lyrics and slowly sucks your soul until you're a lifeless, penniless, consumer husk.

That, and it's generally just screechy techno-enhanced babble these days with no imagination and an unhealthy overdose of "studio magic."

As an aside- I get my fill of pop radio every day at work. The only station that makes a day go even more slowly is when somebody decides it's time for *shudder* country music.

I know dude, I hate it when people forced me to listen to mainstream music, the restraints hurt and I have to say I like it to get out of it faster.

Well, rap is a good idea, I just hate how its taken. its a really clever idea and I really like the lyrical pacing but its always about woman and violence. It should be about personal stories. Besides, all modern rapers are douches.

Popular music is a hard thing for guys. It seems like every time I go to a party people are playing stuff like System of a Down, or Korn, or Led Zeppelin or equally depressing, with lyrics that talk about how the world is shit and grinding rock instrumentals. And if you don't like it, you're not cool. And if you like something like jazz, or alternative, or electronic, then you're a pussy or a fag.

You know what, sometimes maybe I'd rather listen to N'Sync's "Sailing" cover or "Breathe" by Telepopmusik than "Chop Suey" and "Falling Away From Me" for eighty minutes.

Don't get me wrong, I think all music has it's place in the pantheon of artistic expression. I just hate jerks who criticize and label people because they have different tastes.

in addition to aforementioned reasons, is the fact that the 'popular' songs get played too much for my tastes. generally i listen for lyrics, specifically those that are witty, clever, and/or poetic, so by the 40th time of many songs, a fair amount of appeal is lost. related to the previous reason, 'popular' music often falls short of a personal lyrical threshold of enjoyment. lastly, Christian rap is rarely popular, therefore my preferred genre is underrepresented in the 'top' music.

I find it substantially lacking in integrity. When I listen to *most* metal bands, I know they've spent their entire careers working their arses off playing shows and scraping together to record albums of songs which they write and perform themselves for the love of the genre. This is a far cry from some gyrating sex object (both genders inclusive) who doesn't write their songs and has their vocals substantially touched up in the study anyway.

Ah, generalisations.

I don't like anything more or less because of its popularity. If it sounds good and is popular, that's fine, I'll continue to like it whether or not other people like it. If no one likes it and I think it sounds good, I'll still listen to it; I don't need other people around to affirm my decision regarding music. I don't understand why people would stop liking something just because other people also do.

Of course, the opposite isn't good either. Intentionally listening to or pretending to like something just because others do is pretty stupid, but attempting to be counter-culture for no reason at all isn't any better (and is often counter-productive even in that regard).

I chose "all of the above." For other; I am just so used to music from the 40s, 50s, 80s, 90s, & non-english speaking countries that I simply hate the sound of everything availbalbe.

Eh, most of it is crap these days. I'm not against it, but when that's all you hear during PE, it grates on you.

I don't hate popular music, but I resent it. It stops truly talented people from getting out there, and making the money they actually deserve.

Because it sucks?

Pop music is just such a least common denominator form of entertainment that it flies in the face of anyone who appreciates originality and talent. If "catchy" were what mattered, pop music would be great. But it's not...

Phht.. Hating Pop music isn't cool any more.

I dislike people who write off popular music. Yes, there is a lot of crap around, but people enjoy it, its fun and most of it is well written. It's popular for a reason, so it must be doing something right.

Also, I'm a teenager and I listen to Hip Hop.

I would like to know what music OP likes. If I had to guess I'd say Metal or Alt rock, but that's just a guess.

Ohh yeah.

But then that talented artist would be popular, and then you'd hate them too. What you should complain about isn't popular music inherently, it would be people liking what you perceive to be shit music. And then that's a taste thing which can't really have a right answer.

Sigh... There is no good reason to hate popular music. Popularity should not factor into one's opinion of music. At all.

If music is good, it doesn't matter of it's popular. If it's bad, it also doesn't matter. Stop pretending that popularity has anything to do with quality.
