Lack of creativity, all pop music seems to be is a beat, a sexy girl singing about love using lyrics someone else wrote for her and advertising... and people eat it up for some reason.
Pop music used to be what you think of, britney spears style skimpy girls, boybands, love song with beats but now we have that and a rap r&b hybrid which is awful.

Saw an advert the other day which reminded me why i hate pop music, for an album from some sexy blond (suprise), "...new album including the number 1 single boys" then the song comes on "boys... boys... boys... boys..."
Really?

I like interesting music first, which you don't get in pop songs because singing is 95% of the track, but i really like when songs arn't about love. Tool - Vicarious, a song about how people get a thrill hearing about terrible things in the media but won't admit it, and the track has periods of no singing allowing the music to stand up by itself, you can't do that with a pop beat.

I don't say that I don't listen to popular music because it's popular because then it quickly descends into the "I'm cool and unique because I don't listen to pop music" argument that has become invalid in recent years because hating popular music has become popular.

It has to be said that I hate the majority of people when they talk about music because they're snobby elitist assholes. I like rock and metal primarily but some of the people I've spoken to in life have been so snobby when I mention some of the metal bands I listen to (a mixture of popular and obscure metal bands) because the popular bands are sellouts/not metal/crap music [simply because it's popular and it's almost as if they expect me to drop to my knees and ask for repentance just because I like Slipknot/Black Dahlia Murder/Killswitch Engage in equal quantities to Whispered/Behemoth/Chthonic (well you get the idea).

Now, actually on topic:

The reason that I don't listen to popular music is because usually it is generic, computerised, poorly written dross - that being said some popular music is none of the above but I still prefer rock/metal as it is usually well constructed technical music that is an aural treat to listen to. I do concede though that as with any music a lot of metal is crap but then that just comes with the territory with a lot of music.

This is what the OP is asking;
"Given that you hate popular music, why do you hate popular music?"
It doesn't make sense to say "I don't hate popular music, given I hate popular music."
I know, I just find it annoying that the thread assumes everyone here hates it. There's nowhere that says "IF you hate pop music..." it just assumes we hate it from the get go with no inbetween. Anyway just a pet peeve of mine I suppose.

You guys have NO idea what it is like having to deal with this crappy music when you're in middle school. They play kesha in the hallways and justin beiber at the school dances.

well im 17, so i dont hate all popular music, but most of it is just rubbish. There are still good artists breaking through, its just theres more artists who sell the same, cheap, over produced pop/rnb/hip-hop. Although i like rock, Metal, swing and drum and bass the best, decent rap can be good, such as Eminem. its the music thats sort of a pop/rap genre that gets on my nerves, and everyone thinks there hard because they listen to it. Lets not forget the god awful music from high school musical and glee. uhhhhhhhhhhh.

There are some good artists out there, even some artists who perform pop music, but there are very rarely ever shown, and its always the same crap in the top 10 charts.

It's really, really unoriginal; it all sounds the same. On top of that, its extremely overplayed.

Where is the "I don't hate popular music" option? I like popular music! The reason it is popular is because people like it so it can't be awful like some people claim. Different people have different tastes don't assume that everybody hates one thing.

I don't hate it. There is the odd pop tune I think is ok. I'd never put it on by choice but I won't complain about it, it's just not my thing.

Oi... well, this thread could turn out well...

I hate rap because as of yet, it's all about money and hoes and bitches and hoes and "I'm so hood" and hoes etc. It's so damned annoying. The only slightly redeeming aspect is that sometimes the music in the background is nice.

I don't really hate pop, I simply dislike it. I'm ok with it, I can listen to it, but I prefer not to. It's catchy and all.
You are exactly like me, do you by any chance like rock and metal? If so, then we must be twins.

Rap is also, in Yahtzee's words:
"Rap is about whores, guns and whores getting shot by guns."
[SUB]Gotta love that ZP-episode![/SUB]

I hate popular music because of what Aby_Z said, and also that people justr go around trying to push their mainstream songs on you, gaah, it makes me mad.
And when I ask them if they want to listen to a song I like? "Noo, says the man."
Haha, It's hard not to find someone who likes rock or metal on this site. I'm a fan of Symphonic Metal; Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, Krypteria, etc. The awesomeness of heavy instruments along with keyboard, violin, choirs, etc.

indeed.

in a perfect world, enjoying rap would instakill you, and making it would instakill you, AND guarantee your going to hell.

i hayt it.
I'm afraid I can't agree with that. Like I've said, some rap songs can be slightly redeemable by the tune despite the singing or the horrid lyrics. I wasn't in to any music 10 years ago, but I've heard from just about everyone that rap actually meant something back then. It was redeemable because of the message it sent. In a perfect world, rap would be rid of all the bragging, fucking, 'Yee-yah!', etc. and we could get messages that can run chills down our spines.

This perfect world isn't too far away friend. It's a place called "Stoplisteningtotheradio" and it is wonderful. Your mind will be liberated and all memory of shit hip hop will fade.

Pop music is pretty avoidable when you think about it. Don't listen to the pop radio stations (if you're in Australia you have no excuse) and don't watch MTV. Sure, they might play Lady Gaga in shopping centres but when was the last time you stopped what you were doing and started listening to a song that they played in shopping centre.

Oh, but of course. I stopped listening to the radio years ago. Now it's all Symphonic Metal for me all the time (And the other assorted genres I listen to...)

And for your second point at the mall, if you're there with a girlfriend and you can't bring anything along and you're forced to sit there waiting while she shops... Horrid things get stuck in your head.

I can't vote; apparently I'm now a loser/bandwagon jumper-on-er/ripped off kid/who thinks I'm cool/and talks smack about "good" music.

I love pop. I find it soothing.
I love rap/hip-hop. It's fun to dance to.
I love country. I don't have a reason.

The list could go on. I like a little bit of everything really.

But, erm, what exactly are we classifying as "good" music?! Just because you find the most individual, out of the way bands doesn't mean some idiot isn't going to come along and bring them to the front and centre of pop. It's happened.

The bands that WERE edgy and cool got mainstream. Their former fans dropped them when the teens climbed aboard.

At least I listen to what I like and don't let the relative "popularity" dictate whether I can listen to it or not.

I don't "hate" pop music, but I do think a lot of it is uninteresting. Here and there I find a good catchy tune, such as the Phineas and Ferb soundtrack, in a "pop" format. Too often pop is just over produced and soulless, but there are a few gems out there.

It burns a hole into your head using catchy, repetitive lyrics and slowly sucks your soul until you're a lifeless, penniless, consumer husk.

That, and it's generally just screechy techno-enhanced babble these days with no imagination and an unhealthy overdose of "studio magic."

As an aside- I get my fill of pop radio every day at work. The only station that makes a day go even more slowly is when somebody decides it's time for *shudder* country music.
Yeah, I'd say that this (below) would certainly fall into the category of screechy techno-enhanced babble
Jesus!! I have never heard that before, and I couldn't stop laughing for the whole duration. Thats gotta be a joke band, right? RIGHT!?
Sadly, no, it isn't a joke
And possibly even more sad is I know at least three dozen people in my school who consider this "good"

I can handle some popular music, but some of it just makes me cringe. Anything country has the same effect.

Yeah, country does that to me too.

Personally I only like stuff where the music actually plays a part (metal, blues, classical, etc.) stuff like hip-hop or anything that smells like disney channel shits me to no end

(also 1st post ftw)

Popular music in this day and age is very minimalistic and disposable. Not to say that this wasn't ever the case, but it seems all remotely the same to one another. Katy Perry = Lady GaGa = Rhianna.

The same can be said for all of these yuppie Apple store "indie" bands made up of skinny, bearded guys with V-neck shirts. Instantly disposable crap that will make it's way into a commercial for a product aimed at the white West-coast hipster demographic and then disappear.

Music in general has gotten really sucky.
