Poll: Why do you play as opposite gender characters?

You missed an option in the poll.. You should have one saying "I only rarely ..."

That's what I do.. 95% of the time I'm male, but sometimes I make a female one.. Why? Well in some games male and female characters have slightly different skills/attributes/perks/so on, so the female gender might be better for my character build.

Like in Morrowind, some builds work best as female, others work best as male, and most of them don't really favor any gender.

EDIT: Oh, and why I don't play as opposite is simply because it's not natural to me.. I'm a guy in real life so I should be a guy in the game as well ; )

I've never done it but I would if the gender effected the game. In the way that my character then would be much more fast and agile.

When given the choice I will almost always play a female character, unless they are really ugly or from an ugly race. For example when I played WoW, I followed a very strict Race/Gender rule of Human, Night Elf, Blood Elf, Gnome, Draenei = female;// and Tauren, Orc, Troll, Undead = male;// Dwarf = gay.

And really, some male characters are so terrible looking they make me want to puke. RE5 is a good example when you play a character whose arms are as thick as his head. I wish more games had really complex character creation tools that allowed to recreate pretty much any person like Saints Row 2.

When it comes to roleplaying games... I don't really imagine myself as the character. I see them almost as another NPC, just with a guiding hand of conscience controlled by me So on that basis, women are more... attractive, I guess (in more than just the physical dimension). My RPG choices tend to be governed by what sort of person I'd like to associate with, not who I want to be.

Frankly because the "Romance the dude in your party" achievement isn't going to earn itself.
That's my usual experience with the game- although I do enjoy seeing it from different perspectives at times, especially when gender really changes things in the story.


And killing Carth at the end of KOTOR as a darkside female is so satisfying.

I don't have any specific gender preference,i play both genders equally. The reason? well, to role play.

When i play MMOs I "act" differently for each of my character.

in mmos i tend to play female characters. they are better to look at and it is hard to follow the story. but in rpgs like dragon age and mass effect i can not get into a female character. i get engrossed in the story and i play it like i would. tomb raider and stuff i can get into though.

In Morrowind there was a whole town that reacted to you differently depending on your gender.(It was run by a man-hating arch wizardess IIRC, and had all female guards) I usually play both, usually with a different playstyle each time.

Only time I have is in Mass Effect 2, and that was to fuck Garrus, so to try something new I guess.

I played FemShep in Mass Effect 1 and got it on with Carth... I mean... what's his name again? Anyways, I wasn't too happy with the decision. But when I heard that Garrus was romanceable in Mass Effect 2 I was ecstatic. And when I got to part of the game, it was awkward, but also very realistic and kinda sweet. I am now satisfied with my FemShep's romantic escapades.

All of my WoW characters are female...because plainly, if I'm going to be forced to stare at an ass all day, It might as well be a nice ass. o3o

Something different usually, but itends up being more I like looking at a female's ass more than a male's when it comes down to it. Though for Mass Effect 2, I played female shepard just for Garrus... I mean come on, Garrus is kick ass.

I play as a member of the opposite sex mainly because I have no interest in members of my sex, either thematically or aesthetically. It's like the next step up from the "because they're pretty option": because they are more interesting to me and I've never really understood members of my sex. If I'm going to spend hours living out a character's life, it better be as someone I'd like to get to know; I guess that's why I'm not so big on all of the military shooters.

Also, from back in the day when gender stereotypes were much more prevalent relating to gameplay, the female characters were faster and that always suited my style of play. I remember the first time I played Dead or Alive 2 and I was shocked by how fast all of the male characters are; I sure got clobbered that first time through.

i've only played a female character in fallout 3 for the blackwidow perk to see what special dialogue options it gave because the majority of NPCs in that game are male. oh, i also had a female blood elf named rozypalm, it was an inside joke with my co-workers who also played WoW. but for the most part i play a male character, I guess it just makes it easier for me to become immersed in the game and RP.

You may be a man in real life. But I doubt you are a space-marine. So since you're role playing one in a game, it may as well be a female space-marine.

I hardly do play a game with that, as I am a non.RPG PC Singleplayer fanboy, but sometimes I do it most of the times because I do not like how my gender is portrayed, they are pretty or because I am tired of playing like a macho style guy.

I almost never play as the opposite gender. Whenever I play a game, I do the best I can to make myself if I'm given the option. I guess thats technically roleplaying. Now, I have "characters" that I'll make that are female, but they are never my main. Also, if a game has it where you have to play as a girl, I have no problem with that. Mosty it's just that when I get the chance to be "me" in a game, I take it.

I only play as the opposite gender when I'm forced to (ie. the Amazon, Sorceress, and Assassin in Diablo 2 when I'm trying all classes), and when that happens I don't usually care. Mainly because the person I'm playing as doesn't matter as long as they can kick ass.

I almost always play as my own sex. The only times I don't is when there either isn't a female version of the character I want to play (such as the alchemist in Torchlight), or when the female version is just ass ugly (such as the female dwarves in WoW).
