For me it is a mix of all the above really.

If it is a publisher I like or the sequel to a good game or looks like it will have amazing gameplay I will preorder if I feel the bonus is worth it.

If it doesn't meet some of that criteria the pre-order bonus doesn't even come into consideration for me.

Once I know I am going to get something I figure I may as well pre-order. I am going to get it anyway so I may as well get it cheaper or with a nice bonus.

Let's see my first pre-order was actually my second game. I got $5 for something (I don't remember what) and my dad decided to spend it on pre-ordering Pokemon Stadium. I was mad because I wanted to buy a Power Ranger or something, not realizing that my dad had just essentially got me something worth WAY more than the cheap plastic I was going to waste my cash on.

I pre-orderd Pokemon Crystal Version just to make sure I got it. And, the next pre-order was The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I was super excited about the game, and by pre-ordering I got Ocarina of Time (With Master Quest!) free. I had only ever rented the game, so I got two games for one. That's my favorite pre-order bonus.

I don't think I ever bothered pre-ordering again until Pokemon Diamond Version so I could make sure I got it Day 1 and would get a free stylus. After that, I didn't pre-order until Dragon Age II to get the bonus content. My little brother pre-ordered from the second shipment of Super Mario All-Stars: Limited Edition because he figured he wouldn't be able to get it else wise. How wrong he was...

I would pre-order BF3, but EA pissed me off so bad that I can't to anything but wait and hope that things will change. DICE should be a standalone company.

The only game I've ever pre-ordered was Mass Effect 2 on PS3 because I was hugely anticipating it and I knew it was good because reviews were out for the 360/PC version.

Otherwise, I'll just buy the game after it's released and I've read reviews. That way I know if it's good and the devs don't have to whine about used game sales murdering their parents or something. I'm usually not trampling over people to play a game anyways, so I can wait. I'd rather spend my money wisely.

Maybe in the future if there are really good pre-order bonuses for a game I'm anticipating, then I'll try it out. It'll probably be some souped-up ultimate edition anyway. I generally don't find the bonuses are worth taking the risk. Remember, ANY game can disappoint.

Other - No one thing makes me preorder.

The decision usually consists of a mix of the options in the poll.

I have never pre-ordered a game unless there was a specific bonus I got for doing so. Without a bonus, I'd rather just buy the game on day 1.

Depending on the game, I pre-order because its a game that i loved the earlier games of and looks really exciting and I wanted to play it as soon as I heard it was being made. The other reason I will pre-order a game is because of the studio that created it, so if I have spent hours playing the other games they have made I think to myself that this game will be worth my money and I will enjoy it.

Aren't we forgeting the original reason to pre-order? So that we can ensure our copy on day one.

Swag. Only reason I even get collector's editions of games and not just wait until the price drops dramatically. And a few other things. I have yet to buy a game that I did not like. This is because I play the demo, read up on reviews after a game has come out, ask other people, etc. This is why aside from Deus Ex, I have not bought a game in nearly six months. Fuck all has come out that I wanted to play.

Mostly because of the goodies that come with collectors editions, that's really the main reason I'd ever pre-order something. I've only pre-ordered two games that weren't CEs, and I think they were Brutal Legend and inFamous if I remember right.

If the goodies aren't worth it or too expensive, I won't pre-order and I will wait a while before I get it, or if I really want the game I will just get it the day of and call it good.

Portal 2 has been the latest game I've pre-ordered and that was in a long time too. I'm glad I did in the end though, because it was that or Duke Nukem Forever and I would have been so increadibly disappointed with that. So yes, I guess if it's a sequal to what I liked that definitely ups the chance of me wanting to get it ASAP. (That said past experiences have lead me to be careful about getting excited about third releases.)

The only games I've pre-ordered are Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations. I've also just pre-ordered Forza 4. Why? Because I love the game franchises and I want to play them as soon as they come out. I know that if I didn't pre-order it would take me months to eventually get an opportunity to buy them. You also get some pretty cool stuff when you pre-order.

A combination of pre-order bonuses,Special/collectors edition availability and the fact that its a lot easier to come up with 50-100$ in the span of 2/3/4 or more months then the day of purchase.

The only two games I've ever pre-ordered were Fallout: New Vegas and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood via Steam, and just for the pre-order content. I love this sh!t.

Because of the pre-order bonuses and the joy of getting the game a day early.

I don't care about pre-order bonuses. The only reason I ever pre-order is so I can be sure that I'll get a copy before the store runs out.

I pre-order when the preview footage is good, I am interested in the game and don't want to wait for my copy.

I don't usually pre-order games. Off the top of my head, I can only remember three. Etrian Odyssey 2 & 3 and the 3rd. edition of Space Hulk (a board game). I also might have pre-ordered a few expansions to board games I already have.

The Etrian Odyssey games I pre-ordered for two reasons. I loved the first one and they're published by ATLUS, which means that if you don't get them when they're new, they'll run out and it'll be really difficult to find a copy.

With Space Hulk, I'd always wanted to get the first edition, but it was out of print and any copies were really expensive. When I heard about the 3rd. edition I just had to pre-order right away. Besides, it was a limited print run, and it sold out before release, so pre-ordering was the only real option.

I pretty much only pre-order if I can't be sure I'll get a copy after release.
