I work at a comic book store in New Zealand, the only one in our capital as a matter of fact (it's not a huge industry over here.). We mostly specialize on western stuff ie: DC/Vertigo ,Marvel, Darkhorse, But we do deal in a small amount of Manga, we can order things in for people as well if we don't have them.

I had this one customer come up to me and buy some manga (Deathnote) which I have read too and she makes this snide comment about how manga is better then western stuff, I ask if she has read comics aside from manga and she tells me "Why bother, it's shit." Now I read manga and watch anime, as well as read comics etc and I think this kind of ignorance has been growing a lot as of late, especially in the manga side of things.

I know this isn't true on all people into either but it really annoys me when people are so closed minded like this. It's fine if you tried some and didn't like it, but it doesn't mean it downright sucks.

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this sort of trend lately?

Also a poll, manga or comics (can be anything, DC, Marvel, whatever). I'm just curios what's more popular here on the Escapist.

Because everyone thinks whatever they do is superior to everyone else.

Its normal.

And I like them both equally. I can't say I like manga better because I've yet to read one as awesome and politically involved as something like Watchmen, but manga and anime are a nice escape from anything remotely realistic.

I prefer Manga, but I don't care if you read comic books, and I know they can be just as good as manga.

People tend to think that they're opinion can qualifies for fact rtaher than... well, rather than opinion. It's a sort of "high and mighty" thing going on. It's always been there, it's not a recent thing.

Well, not everyone does. Take me for example, I have an each to their own code of ethics on matters like these.

Human beings get a sense of euphoria when they find someone who agrees with them and many of us enjoy the smug satisfaction that comes with elitism. This is not a trend that came about recently, this has been going on for ages. But yes, it does get on my nerves...
...unless I agree with the person making the comment.

If you want to call me hypocritical because of that, go ahead. I know I'm a hypocrite.

I believe that ever since there were two different versions of the wheel, people feel the need to justify why they like one over the other to the closest people. This true in anything.

I prefer comics. I feel I can relate to them more. Manga is cool, but not for me.

People want everyone else to be like them
but when they all are you then you hate it and say "stop copying me!"

It's no new trend, you just have a fairly large amount of them. Just smack them with rolled up newspapers and tell them "Bad" and everything will be fine.

I always thought "Manga" and "Comic" were the same. You know, one being a Japanese word the other an English word.

Anyways: Why do you care about that woman? She's full of shit, obviously, will some day die as just another person and history will forget her very soon after her death. Meh.

Humans are opinionated creatures, and are all narcissistic below the surface, we all think of ourselves above the next guy, we believe our interests are superior because they're OUR interests, and why would be a fan of something if we honestly believed there was something better?

Because people are insecure about they're hobbies and are afraid of the "what if (insert random people here) is having more fun doing (insert random hobby here)" notion. So they have to justify they're hobbies while finding any and every reason to go bashing the hobbies of others giving themselves a mockery of the security they so desire.

Also people are extremely self-centered, and narcissistic and believe that if THEY like something then everyone else should based solely on that reason.

Ex: Console Wars, a mass amount of insecure faggotry because people have doubts about the console they bought.

It's sad but then whoever says the world is a happy place is either a liar or a deluded fool.

Largely this, mixed with a healthy dose of "being into something most people don't like/understand makes me interesting!" delusion.

They both good.

I love to wait and collect the graphic novelfor a comic series, and just to be a cheap bastard, I'll go online to read a manga.

God, the Internet is fun.

Personally I choose Manga for availability. The Barns & Noble near my house moved and the local library has a better selection of Manga than Comics.

Just a case of cultural appropriation. People right now just love to praise foreign products and distance themselves from local ones - right now, anything that comes out of Japan is "exotic" enough for people to start harping on about how much superior it is. Happens with foreign films as well. I can't help but think that current Korean films are way better than Hollywood pictures, but I realise that this stems from an ignorance of films in general; there are many good Hollywood films I haven't bothered to watch last year, and I'm sure there are plenty of crap Korean films that I haven't seen, simply because only the better films are likely to be exported to the West anyway.

Back to comics vs manga. Sure, manga is ok, ignoring the fact that "manga" is just a Japanese equivelant term for "comic" (likewise the term "anime" is used to refer to Disney cartoons or any animation), but comics are superior simply because of this guy:
