Poll: Why does everything have to be a case of "What I'm into is better then what you're into!"

Just a case of cultural appropriation. People right now just love to praise foreign products and distance themselves from local ones - right now, anything that comes out of Japan is "exotic" enough for people to start harping on about how much superior it is. Happens with foreign films as well. I can't help but think that current Korean films are way better than Hollywood pictures, but I realise that this stems from an ignorance of films in general; there are many good Hollywood films I haven't bothered to watch last year, and I'm sure there are plenty of crap Korean films that I haven't seen, simply because only the better films are likely to be exported to the West anyway.

Back to comics vs manga. Sure, manga is ok, ignoring the fact that "manga" is just a Japanese equivelant term for "comic" (likewise the term "anime" is used to refer to Disney cartoons or any animation), but comics are superior simply because of this guy:
Who?
He is Desperate Dan, from the Dandy comic. I can't remember exactly what he did in the comic, apart from eating cow pies.

Manga everyday.
Why?

Because something like 7/10 Comics are shit with nonexistent stories and actions nonstop.
Nonexistent... okay ur bullshitting me, right? Manga is full of more nonexistent story shit than the toilet at a Taco Bell eating contest full of writers for contestants. I'd just like to name ONE THING in ur manga that pertains TO ACTUAL FUCKIN' REALITY
And what's so much more 'real' with a guy called Juggernaut?

But to actually answer your question;
The characters are real. Their emotions and their 'acting'. They aren't all balls and testesterone as many Western comics are. Surely there are many mangas like that as well of course but the Western comics are a lot more aimed towads youths while manga has a lot more diversed group.
That's more your opinion then fact, although I think Tidus53 has a weak look on it in general.

I think both sides have something for everyone, and while some may not appreciate one style, they should repect it.

Because as men we have been built with an internal instinct of establishing dominance and superiority in every field. This applys to politics, economy, sports, gaming, and even in cases of pop culture and literature. This question basically asks," why is man always focused on establishing which/who is dominant." To summarize it in a few choice words, IT'S ANIMAL INSTINCT!!!
I didn't know opinions of comics were based on animal instinct.
Matters of Choice will often result in a matter of which is dominant. Say for example, what's better vanilla or chocolate ice cream
That has to be the weakest example I have ever seen, but I get what you're saying.

I'd go for vanilla in the end.

Anime annoys me, People will instantly choose it over western stuff without even sampling the western comics. Its just annoying how like EVERYONE has just given up their culture for another culture. Where's the fucking English culture, oh wait I can't say that its "racist"

*inaudible murmurs*

I have to leave...
I have to agree with this to an extent. There's a lot of love for Japanese culture (and I get why, samurais and ninjas, honour and glory yadda yadda), but it seems that some people (Japanophiles I've heard them called) seem to bring this to a new level. I know America is hardly steeped in history, maybe that's why?

I think it's one of those attempts to be edgy and different, that ultimately fails because every other person and their dog wants to be edgy and different and does it in the same way too.

REALITY AINT GOT MECHS, CYBORGS, NINJAS, SPIRITS, OR ANY OTHER OBLIGITORY ANIME BULLSHIT!!!

Marvel has REAL places, science, and they make things sound like they CAN happen, manga is just,"heres some made bullshit, believe and obsess over it" You do know that there are guys in there 50's who collect comics. And by diverse groups do u mean those who obsess over it, or the local Japanese, or my friend Ryan
I'm going to have to stop you right there. That is possibly the most small minded comment I've read on the Escapist. So you're saying that because Manga dares to go places where Western Comics won't, it's automatically shit? Because if that's so, you must live in a really sad, colourless little world without an imagination.

It's not an attempt to be edgy.
It's just proven that it -is- better in the eyes of many.
Sorry, I meant to say 'for some it is'.

I did answer your question.
I said: The Characters and their emotions. They -ACT- like how a human would act rather than "Go smash brains" like many of marvels comics are.
Have you tried the less mainstream Marvel stuff for example? Like Nyx? It's certainly got a lot of depth and emotional characters. It's about Mutants in the X-men world that have to survive everyday life on their own, because proffesor X can't be everywhere.

On the DC side, take a look at the new Blue Beetle. It has well fleshed out characters and a great story (Linkara even reviewed it as a good comic ^^).

Manga have their great ones too, for example I like Eureka 7. I think it's charming, has a good dose of action, romance, a great plot and guys that look like guys.

Taking the Ultimates as an example was a bad one to start with as it's about a big group of heroes, and thus the way to get everyone in there seems to be battle byt "their" logic.

As for the radioactive spider bite thing, it's not the most concrete thing to base a power on and it is a stretch to beleive but no more so then being able to use paper to fuel a blast at someone in Law of Ueki, not to mention kids that jump in giant robots and instantly know how to pilot them (See Fafner, I did like that series though.).

I have to agree with you there, part of the reason I read manga is because it explores some things western comics don't :)

The one thing I hate the most are people who dislike something for no reason. If you've read a western comic and don't like them thats fine. But if you have never read one and call it shit really ticks me off. When this kind of thinking reaches people in power, that is when all the problems in the world start.

You know what pisses me off. People who just can't let people argue or bicker about stupid shit anymore. People who have to psychoanalyze everything they and others do until their actions aren't even human anymore. Go live on planet Vulcan where no one is illogical. Talk about someone with a superiority complex.

Wanted to vote, but you were missing option 3 for people like me, which is "I like both". Other than that nice poll :)

OT: It's a natural phenomon... a very unfortanet one but one none the less :/ Personally I try to keep an open mind to new things... at least I think I do... these things are really a matter of perspective.
I did the poll to see which is more popular, choosing a third option like that would be like voting for each and showing no difference. Most people tend to lean one way more then the other, but I will remember that in future ^_^
Ya... I was thinking that was probably why you set it up like that, but I wasn't sure :/ lol

I only read webcomics.
There's probably a huge psychological explaination, but my theories are hypothical and usually wrong so for the sake of my self-esteem I'll just say it's due to people wanting to seem superior to others.
