Because it's not what's popular right now, so it's not expected by publishers to sell. Although arguably Fable 3 was steampunk, and arguably an RPG.

What I'm working on is steampunk, not that that counts for anything.

I've always dreamt of a sequel to Arcanum. I think a first person/3rd person rpg would be fantastic set in Tarant, the reason I'd want a 1st person perspective would be because the interactions would be vastly different if you where a halfing or a half ogre, people would bend down to talk to you or look up as you tower over them. Also if you where a gunslinger there'd be nothing cooler than looking down the sights of your modified pistol.
I was thinking an oblivion style game, that would be awesome. Perhaps Bethesda could pick up Arcanum like they did Fallout that would be nice of them.

Bioshock 3 is VERY Steampunk.
Wait for it to get released and enjoy yourself. It's high tech powered by steam engines, the best Steampunk can offer. (Play Thief 3 if you really want a Steampunk game. Even now that game is great).
Thief 4 is being developed in Montreal by the same company that does Deus Ex 3, therefore I am hoping for a nicely done stealth game in a Steampunk setting.
Don't hope too much, it's being done by a guy that said that he thinks that Deus Ex: Invisible War didn't have enough action.

OT
Would I like more?
YES!
Why aren't there more?
I thnik it's because people have no taste.

Not a genera, its a sub-genera.

Steampunk is just one type of setting to layer on top of a game. Dispute its apparently cult popularity there apparently aren't that many developers who have a thing for it. I suppose you could easily mod a game to be Steampunk though.

It does seem to be quite a thing with the girls [http://www.geeksaresexy.net/2010/11/13/sexy-steampunk-girls-pics/] and I'm already assuming you knew about Agatha Heterodyne [http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/]

Yeap, I'd like to see more games like Arcanum too. It's one of my biggest game wishes, to see a spiritual succesor, direct sequel or just a modern remake of that game. Somehow I doubt it'll happen any time soon though. Dammit now I have to reinstall it again, after giving it up when I screwed up my save game.

But you'll have Bioshock Infinite to look forward too. Not a proper RPG perhaps, but by the looks of it definitely steampunk. Silverfall sounds pretty interesting too, gonna give that a quick google.

There are games that jump in with Steampunk, like Warcraft and Bioshock
Tsk tsk tsk! Bioshock is too advanced to be steampunk, hence why it's dieselpunk; WW2-ish era tech used for futuristic purposes, early electric systems, big greasy combustion engines. All covered with an Art Deco art style. Definitely not steampunk though.

No such thing as clockwork punk. Clockwork is a part of steampunk.
Really? I thought Clockpunk was basically Leonardo Da Vinci; Rennaissance-era tech used for futuristic machines.

Steampunk stuffs too much into a setting, theres so much to be done and the player has to figure it all out. Even Arcanum at times felt like there was just TOO much to figure out, and as a protagonist, they have be relatable.
Technically Arcanum combined two settings, both regular fantasy and steampunk. Steampunk doesn't per definition have magic in it, I myself prefer my steampunk as 'pure' as possible, like how the anime Steamboy portrays it (at least right until the end). In that case I wouldn't say it has too much stuff in the setting.

It is notable that one of the top skin packs in Minecraft is a Steampunk theme. It's a favorite of plenty of people that I know and have seen on the internet.

Anyway, a decent Steampunk game would be wicked, and not just a RPG. Though IMO Steampunk is held back by the apparent "it must be victorian and alternate history OR ELSE" vibe held within. A perfect example of non-alternate history is in the game Rise of Legends, where you can find dragons and steampunk/clockwork mechs and walking statues with laser beams.

I'd say that Steampunk is as much of a derivative of Sci-Fi as Tolkien Fantasy is a derivative of normal Fantasy; if Tolkien Fantasy wasn't so mainstream and familiar then it would be seem just as strange as Steampunk does. All Steampunk needs is a good bit of mainstream media and then things will really get exciting.

Here's hoping Riese: Kingdom Falling is the start of it!

Read Terry Prachett. Look for a troll named Crysophase. You will love his books.

He's already my favorite author, my forum name is from Discworld. :)

Also, what about steampunk FPS's?

I'd love it, under a few STRICT rules.

1. Keep Square Enix AWAY FROM IT, VERY FAR AWAY.
2. Don't made it too anime-like, no offense but Anime-RPGs are a MASSIVE turn-off, I'm thinking Rise of Legends (Not really a good game, but awesome Steampunk), sort of style.
3. Keep Square Enix AWAY FROM IT.
4. Don't make it grindy.

Why has no one pushed this genre recently. It seems an obvious diversion from the Tolkienism that seems to be so intrinsic in western RPG's. I'm not a massive fan of sci fi over fantasy but after playing Mass Effect 2 I found the change of scenery most refreshing.

I know Bioshock dabbles in steampunk to some effect but wouldn't a Steampunk fantasy world be awesome fun and easy to apply to a game. Would other people like this or is it just me?

Edit: Changed the title for clarity ;) Sorry about that.
Time for me to plug this [http://www.amazon.com/Sakura-Wars-Long-Premium-Playstation-2/dp/B002DC8GW2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1301871217&sr=8-2] again. And yes, we need more of them.

Try .hack//G.U. if you haven't already. It's an excellent steampunk RPG. Well, in a manner of speaking. It's technically a game within a game, where said game has a steampunk setting. Try it out.

Isn't Mad Hamish the gnome that works for the Watch?
That's Wee Mad Arthur. Mad Hamish is one of the Silver Horde. Also the bird-riding Feegle is named Hamish.

Probably because it won't be to good, most steampunk stories are very similar. Also i don't see the "punk" in steampunk. You'd think by that name there is a guy made out of steam with a punk attitude.

There are a decent number of games developed using what people consider Steampunk to be, people have listed a lot of them, and honestly I think the genere is fairly well represented given that it is such a niche genere.

I'd like to see it visited more often as a true RPG setting, and with a big budget, however it's noteworthy that most attempts to do this have pretty much failed. "Arcanum" was a great game, but consider that there was a fight between Troika and Sierra (much like their battles with Atari later) over game content, and they went with an earlier build and released what was a buggy mess, not to mention causing enough bad blood where the odds of there ever being a sequel became non-existant as soon as the game was released. To most people looking to produce games, they tend to simply look at this as a relative failure, without considering the reasons why. "Space 1889" was anticipated by a lot o people, especially given the relative popularity of the two "Megatraveller" games in RPG circles, however the game was clunky and watching six months go by as your characters walk around the streets talking to people is kind of annoying.

For the most part Japan has focused on the genere more, and truthfully they probably come closer to actual Steampunk in style than western attempts to do the same thing. The reason being that people tend to forget the "punk" aspect of the whole thing and tend to label anything retro-future as being "Steampunk". With Japanese creations the big hair, and outlandish fashions tend to bring them far closer to the actual vision of Steampunk than the more straightforward "Pseudo-Victorian" take on the genere you see in western creations. I will admit though that I long for well done WRPGs of the sort however, because while I enjoy JRPGs I tend to ultimatly prefer WRPGs more when all is said and done, and equal attention is paid to them.

That said, I've also been hoping someone would again take a crack at doing some "Shadowrun" RPGs or something similar to that universe. Not Steampunk, but another neglected style of game, in this case though the neglect is odd because I don't think the "Shadowrun" games were unsuccessful when they were released.

At any rate, these are my thoughts, mixed bag that they are. I'd love to see another Arcanum-type game, done to the level of say "Dragon Age", but it doesn't seem likely. I think we should count ourselves lucky that we see as much with this obscure genere as we do.
