Duke Nukem 3d had:
* A voiced character (a very shallow character, but thats part of the charm).
* A visible face (most other shooters have learned nothing from Hollywood).
* Realistic buildings and places.
* Epic space-station enviroments.
* Interactive enviroment (the best example would be the billiard table).
* The shrink gun, the freeze gun, the pipe bomb, trip mines, the devastator, hologram, jetpack.
* Quick melee button (this was never seen again until Call of Duty).
* Your own bloody bootprints on the ground if you stepped into bloodpools (dont underestimate the effect of small details).
* Mirrors and see-trough windows (take that, Quake!).
* Better one-liners than Arnold.
* And hookers...

A lot of other games have learned a lot from Duke Nukem 3d, and i really doubt a new Duke Nukem would ever live up to the old. But im really looking forward to see them trying!

Edit: And i forgot to add that it was possible to play it coop!

(Sorry I think there was a thread about buying Duke Nukem 4ever)
Laddie, just in case someone hasn't already told you, Duke Nukem is simply a legend. That's why so many people think he's awesome, he just is. Regardless of a background story, the reason he is a legend, the reason he has more respect than the mere Master Chief, or the epic Gordon Freeman, is because he was A. There first, and B. Simply more awesome. He has huge muscles, huge guns, kills aliens, wears sunglasses and smokes cigars, he's a womaniser, he's just all the awesomeness needed in a fictional action hero, and compared to a scientist and a military bogy, he's the king.

I'm guessing you were born in the 90s so you probably didn't play Duke Nukem growing up, so considering how old you were 13 years ago (or however long ago it was), compared to many of us who were playing him at the time, your appreciation is understably limited regarding this character, but he does deserve the communities awe and respect that you see him getting.

And no that won't happen, Duke dying would be unforgivable.

As Duke would say, after causing an alien massacre "Let god sort 'em out".

Have any of us really ever finished the original? I remember owning it, then just finding the part with the strippers, staring at their pixelated glory, and then getting bored and playing something else. Don't know how the sequel will be but in all honesty FPS's bore me to death. They've all been done to death now and are so samey it's annoying.

It's either generic brown realistic FPS or generic space shooter FPS.

I don't play FPS that focus on multiplayer, and I rarely play FPS with single player only unless they have amazing stories to get around the saminess of the gameplay (ie Bioshock).

So no, I will not be playing it most likely.

It was from a time when FPS games were not all CoD/Halo clones, and this might be a sign that they are going to be fun again.

I like games that are over the top and emphasize humor because not many games today do that. I haven't played any other Duke Nukem games but the guy seems hilarious

I took one look at the poll and it made my brain hurt.

As for Duke, its a big deal because of the huge development cycle and I'll pay attention because it might be good. It might be bad. Who knows.

I'll wait and see.

I do not know what to say. The OP listed all the reasons I wanted to buy the game for.

I'm going to buy Duke Nukem Forever.
And there is one simple, easy to understand and very clever reason for it.

HAIL TO THE KING, BABY!

Because chauvinism and ultraviolence are what pass for nostalgia in the games industry nowadays. They're really all we've got.

I mean, really, it's cute and all that the game's been brought back from the brink of vaporware, but the game is stupid. No amount of ironic winking and nudging will change that. I guess I'd be less opposed to the idea of a "dumb comedy" genre game if it wasn't so uncomfortably similar to the straight-faced gaming culture it's satirizing.

I think I'd understand the "its just good fun" argument more if the game looked even halfway competent.

The shooting looks weak, previews have been less than impressive from what I've seen, and its ugly.

Duke Nukem isn't much of a game than gaming icon. He is a gaming legend. He is the Chuck Norris of videogames. It's more of his reputation that precedes him than the actual gameplay. And the fact that Duke Nukem has been in devolopment makes it so much more tempting. Personally i just hope that the Duke Nukem game won't go as the Obama campaign did with all the hope and promises and then it turns out that it isn't really what they wanted. But hey, it's in the hands of Gearbox who made Borderlands so i think that Duke Nukem Forever will be just fine.

Thats the problem. You never played Duke Nukem 3D. All the people who love him, played Duke Nukem 3D.
Play it. If you don't understand after that, THEN ask why.

There are 2 games before 3D, but Im betting most have not played them. (I only also played Duke Nukem 2 as a remake for GBC)

I don't think anyone respects him he is just a joke of awesomeness like chuck norris, people just like making jokes about him being epically manly. A better way to phrase it is properly that duke nukem forever is basically, chuck norris the game, A GREAT BIG JOKE.

No, I will not buy it. I've never been interested in Duke, and I have said multiple times in various threads on the Escapist what I think of Forever.

[rant] I'm not going to go finding previous quotes, so I'll take the main jist of it: I don't think it'll live up to the hype. There'll be a case similiar to MW2 where the hype train kept going past it's station before it slowed down. People brought it, reviews praised it as a 95-100% game, and then a couple of months later everyone realised it wasn't exactly fun, more an annoying, broken-to-shit Multiplayer with so many exploits it was laughable.
With Duke, I don't think it'll be broken, rather, it'll just be average.

I also just don't like it. I am aware that it's apparently making a joke out of itself, but it just doesn't come across that way to me. What exactly is it making a joke out of? The only games I'm aware of for it to take the piss out of are... Well, Duke Nukem ones.
I simply don't find it funny. And no one fucking say 'Get off your high horse' again, because it's not that I'm too 'stuck up' to play a game that doesn't take itself seriously, more like Duke simply doesn't make me laugh. To me, it's too juvenile, and it's trying to hard to be more juvenile than a seven-year-old who's just discovered South Park and feels it appropriate to quote it and copy it's actions wherever possible.

The barely-clothed girls in it don't rattle my cage becase they are 'sexist', but because I never like sex in games. In any game. Whatever it is. I play games to play games, not to get turned on. If I want to have a wank, I'll watch porn, thanks.

But the MAIN reason, the thing that seriously irritates the living shit out of me..
Duke sounds fucking retarded. Seriously, that voice just doesn't fit the character to me, and therefore will anger me everytime he speaks if I were to buy the game. [/rant]

Nostalgia for those who've played the earlier Duke Nukem games, and an appreciation for the whole massive irreverent hyperbolic action hero cliché that is Duke.

Is it great and nuanced characterization and riveting mature storytelling? By no means. Is it good fun? Yep, at least when you're in the mood for B-game shenanigans.

Since I played Duke Nukem 3D, I'll probably play this at some point as well, though it isn't much of a priority.
Basically, this. I remember me and my buddy huddling around his PC back in the day, just playing the shit out of Duke. There is plenty of Nostalgia that does seem to keep him relevant, but I also think there might be a hope among people that DNF and Bulletstorm will be the vanguards for a new generation of shooters that disregard the realistic style of games like COD and Battlefield, and instead focus on just pure fun and mayhem.

Also, I think with a game like DNF, there just needs to be enough story that will give you a reason for doing what you are doing, and than just let you destroy every-muthafucking-thing between you and the goal.

Duke is an Anti-hero
the story of the Duke Nukem games are less about what is going on around you, and more about Duke's reactions to it.
Its a game that doesn't take itself seriously, shown by all the trailers they put out for it.
