the duke has a personality. it is a shallow, brash, womanising one but it is personaility
what do we know about master cheif other than he is a super-soldier, what does he do in his spare time when not killing aliens
this is why duke has more depth

Timing. Duke was born in an age that defined the FPS. For the most part youngins wont understand the nostalgia, or where his catch phrases have been stolen from. Shit Duke was from a time where you couldn't evne look up or down while playing. Wolfenstien, doom, Quake, were all badass carzy games for their day, but it was IMO Duke and redneck rampage that made FPS wicked fun for the very first time. The Devs for DNF are claiming they are remaking a fps from the 90's for this generation. Wait till the newbloods attempt tackling a FPS without regenerating health BUWHAHAHA.

I'll buy it when it goes on sale as I have enough games right now that I can't justify the purchase.

Read up on Master Chief's backstory. In the games Bungie pulled the old "blank slate" trick so players can fill in the blanks of his personality. I know that trick is usually out of laziness, but I find it works well with the chief. You never see his face, he talks enough so he has a presence, but he doesn't talk so much that his personality is laid bare.

Sorry, self-proclaimed Halo fanboy here.
yeah, that is in a novel they made in the end primarily to fill in that blank slate gap.
Blank Slate is an open cop-out. Yes there are many characters in FPSs where their personalities end up being grating or obnoxious to the point of ruining the game. but when a personality does work, in the case of Duke, it is great.
Mastercheif is great when there is killing to do, but can u imagine him in peacetime??
Im pretty sure he eats, sleeps and shits in that suit. If the aliens didnt keep reutrning he would go mental and shoot the place up himself.
Duke however, has a life outside of alien eradication, one that would make charlie sheen blush,

Im excited, because The return of Duke Nukem, if pulled of correctly, could potentially change the face of the FPS market. It COULD mean the downfall of monotonous "realistic" war shooters like Bad Company or COD, and the emergence of more innovative ideas in the market, as well multiplayer modes. Imagine a duke nukem multiplayer. Wouldnt that be better than teabagging the corpses of any number of noobs in a bland, tasteless Black Ops match. Plus, from what it looks like, the game is the closest anyone is gonna get to the pure catharsis of 90's FPS's.

I don't have any deeper emotional connection to the Duke. I see the importance of the Duke-Games in the history of PC-games, yes, but I never understood the nigh frantic affection towards the character. It was a colourful fun-shooter, actually had a story, as bland as it was, and a wacky humor to it and I consider him the mental father to Johnny Bravo (without the weapons and aliens of course) and Serious Sam.
But neither of those characters, in my eyes, is worth more than a little nostalgia-reference now and then. And reading through the comments here, I sometimes wonder if those who go all like "He's just the Duke, dawg." actually played the game.

Which brings me to the question if I'm going to buy the game, to which the answer is "definetly not."
You see, as much fun a blonde muscle-pack who rescues bikini-babes from ugly aliens was in the 90s it's just not that awesome in a time where seeing half-naked women isn't that big of a feat (thank you internet), even for the most helpless freak. The weapons are already more awesome, though a bitunimaginative lately, and the Duke....well, let's just say, that if you make a great joke or, let's say, a hillariously overdone character ONCE....that's funny.
But if you try to tell that same joke again 20 years later, desperately trying to pretend that it's a completely new joke, then you're just being pathetic.

Plus, as much as I'm indifferent to the Duke himself, I absolutely despise DNF. In my eyes, that running gag should have died 5 years ago and expecting me to spend money on it, despite it being absolutely NOTHING new, interesting or something not done already, just because some guys who played the Duke-games as kids now use them to create a game with him, is pretty much an insult.
I see DNF as the ultimate tool-test. I'll just go ahead and say that everyone, who spends the full price on that game, despite it being done and redone and delayed for more than 12 years, knowing full well, that the only reason it stands out is the skin of a character created in the early 90s, is such an incredible tool, I don't know if it's sad or funny anymore.
Because if you do that, you'll probably spend your money for every bullshit if it's just marketed well enough.

I'm probably going to pick it up just so I could perhaps score with some hot babes. And all that nudity, yum.

Duke Nukem 3D was big when I first got into gaming (I'm such an old fogie).

That and the fact that DNF has been a running gag for so long means I'm pretty much morally obliged to get the game.

I have fond memories of playing Duke Nukem 1 and 2 on my first PC, and Duke Nukem 3D was among my favorite shooters in my early adulthood... and to date, the only game where a character literally makes good on the threat "I'm gonna rip off your head and shit down your neck".

Other shooter protagonists may have deeper storylines and fewer stereotypical action movie hero traits... but that's part of Duke's charm. If you don't understand what's so great about a parody of action movie stereotypes, you probably didn't grow up watching Arnold Schwarzenegger movies... either that, or you never noticed how similar they all were...

**edit**
Duke is also the only man in history to break a woman's mind by repeatedly stating what his testes are made of.

Laddie, just in case someone hasn't already told you, Duke Nukem is simply a legend. That's why so many people think he's awesome, he just is. Regardless of a background story, the reason he is a legend, the reason he has more respect than the mere Master Chief, or the epic Gordon Freeman, is because he was A. There first, and B. Simply more awesome. He has huge muscles, huge guns, kills aliens, wears sunglasses and smokes cigars, he's a womaniser, he's just all the awesomeness needed in a fictional action hero, and compared to a scientist and a military bogy, he's the king.

I'm guessing you were born in the 90s so you probably didn't play Duke Nukem growing up, so considering how old you were 13 years ago (or however long ago it was), compared to many of us who were playing him at the time, your appreciation is understably limited regarding this character, but he does deserve the communities awe and respect that you see him getting.

And no that won't happen, Duke dying would be unforgivable.

As Duke would say, after causing an alien massacre "Let god sort 'em out".
You my friend are very ignorant bastard,he is a legend,there4 he I should love him,why is he a legend? He is a legend because he has guns, muscles ok that can MAYBE pass, but FUCKING GLASSES AND SMOKES???AND HE IS THE KING FOR THAT SHIT??No he is not,he is famous because he is funny,or so I am told.I do not C why is he so special??Get your shit strait dude. And also,it does not mean the game is good coz you played when you where little.Good bye,and dont get 2 offended by me,its just that you are a way big hardcore fan,and those trolls I eat for breakfast.
My gods, your spelling and grammar kills any argument you make. The abuse you've inflicted on the English language is criminal.

Wow, I'm ignorant, yet I can see three incredibly easy mistakes to make when conducting oneself in writing the English langauge. Consider yourself on report.

I guess for me, Duke Nukem is nostalgia. Three episodes of EGA platformer greatness, four episodes of 16-colour VGA platforming greatness (with rocking adlib music and SoudBlaster effects), a FPS which was as much fun to edit as it was to play, and 24 levels of DirectX 8 platforming fun.

Of course I'm going to buy the fifth Duke Nukem game. I'll just wait until it's available for under $25 on Steam.
