Poll: Why the hate for X-men: Last Stand?...

...so in anticipation of First Class which comes out tomorrow, I felt like going back and watching the previous X-films. And upon completing the third film, I can see where people could be disappointed with it after the quality of the first two films, but did it "suck"? My opinion is no.

I have been a fan of the x-men since I first saw the animated show in the 90's which then led to me gaining interest in the comics as well as having read my fair share of marvel encyclopedia's. So needless to say I was a little peeved at some of the liberties they took with the characters and their powers/origins in the live-action films.

However, I enjoyed all three films on their own merits. Granted, X3 could have been SO much better than it was but I really don't think it was garbage. Case in point, I love the scene at the climax of the film where wolverine is trying to get to Jean as she keeps burning him. I love the music during that scene, I love how emotional it is (which I think both actors accomplished very well) and I love how "big" it feels. It really is one of my favorite scenes from superhero films.

So escapists, can you explain to me your opinion of why everyone seems to have such malice towards X3, or on the other hand why its really not that bad?

I didn't read the thread right, I thought you meant who loved X-Men The New Class (It was sweet).

I didn't mind the third X-men film but I am not much of a judge on these things.

What I think the problem was was that you have to view the three X-men films as a trilogy. The first two films were great, not sensational but still worth watching. I grant that X-3 wasn't as terrible as X-men Legends Wolverine, but it failed to live up to it's predecessors and seemed to favour spectacle over story with a plethora of new characters introduced willy-nilly (The Angel, for example, had like, three scenes and did nothing, which leads me to question why he was involved at all), the characters that they had weren't really up to much (if I remember rightly, Rogue's story wasn't really touched upon nearly as deeply as it could've been) and it just seemed to smack of the director trying to whisk through as many things as he could without really going into any real depth... for the most part, I mean. For me, the first two films built up this great mythology and this great story with an epic third installment, and the epic third installment just wasn't up to much, leaving a lot of people disappointed, and in juxtaposition with X-men 1 & 2, it wasn't really the climax everyone was hoping for.

But, on the other hand, it has been a while since I've seen it last so my recollection of events may be hazier than they should be... but I CAN remember the events of most films I watch, so what does that say.

Personally I've never found any film-breaking problems with X3 and apparently there certainly aren't any with First Class as I've seen a five-star review of the thing.

A lot of people find the idea of mediocrity particularly offensive in movies, especially in sequels. That paying $10+ to a movie that you won't remember in a week isn't worth it. Thus, buyers remorse and subsequent feelings of being cheated.

It's like paying full price for a movie that's only 30 minutes long. It might be a good movie, but people expect more for $10.

They swept Cyclops under the rug in a really hasty and poorly done manner. Then they killed of Professor X for almost no reason.

They crammed too many X-Men plots into one movie and did justice to none of them.

They did the same thing with characters. Colossus has one goddamned line. And it could have gone to any other character in the movie.

I hate to be this kind of nerd. But in X-Men 2 Wolverine gets shot in the head and he's down for a while. In The Last Stand he shrugs off everything. Even being disintegrated.

"I'm the Juggernaut *****" was never funny. And going back and filming a new scene to put that in was cheap and desperate and just bad.

I believe this is just an instance of the Sequel-is-Always-Worse-Hate that derives from the simple fact that the first time you see a good thing is always with more impact than the second time (See Portal 2).

It's not a pretty well based kind of hatred, like with the Star Wars Prequels that got their own trilogy of documentations, illustrating why they suck.

I only saw it once, but as I remember I wasn't particularly impressed or disappointed. It wasn't any Toy Story 3, but it certainly wasn't any Spiderman 3 either. I'll have to go back and watch it again...

I just didn't like what happened to good ol Charles Xavier.

X3 was terrible for a number of reasons. And I guess we should start there. Part of the problem is marvel wide and that's Pheonix made some kinda sense back when we were space hopping and stuff. This new incarnation just screams Captain Broken. So that's annoying. We didn't need any more wolverine angst.

The hatred for the current movie comes solely from the fact that in the trailers it looks like garbage. This looks like something that was made to be on the Sci-Fi channel and somehow tricked someone into putting it on the big screen. Maybe I'll be wrong, I kinda hope so cus I like the X-men but like Green Lantern the trailers look like dog vomit.

I think part of the reason it garnered hate was that it seemed to have a huge amount of potential pre release: the dark phoenix storyline was a classic from the comics, the trailers (and title) suggested some really epic fights and there were some new, interesting looking characters. But it didn't really live up to the hype: the phoenix story was a side plot that didn't feel that fleshed out, the big fight was confined to a small island and was mostly xmen punching mooks and the new characters were mostly pointless (angel was featured in all the trailers and posters, yet you could pretty much just lift him out of the film without affecting the story). I don't think the film was nearly as bad as the wolverine one though.

Personally, I think it really is that bad. Not really bad, so to speak, but phenomenally mediocre, and really not worth watching. The ending is meh, and it's just really completely unimpressive and disappointing in every way.

I personally enjoyed X3, though I'm no hardcore (or even semi-committed) X-Men fan so I wasn't particularly bothered if anything nerd enraging happened or if a particular character got underused.

The death of Professor X though, didn't like that at all. Granted, we were then meant to think he had managed to transfer his consciousness into that other mans body. but what would they then do had a follow up been made? Leave Charles out of it, bring him back only with a different actor (but hey, look! It's still Professor X) or come up with some convoluted concept for how Man in Coma now looks just like Patrick Stewart.

The second one was still the best of the 3, in my opinion. Origins: Wolverine doesn't count. That was just a mess.

They cramped too much story in one film, it should have been 2 and a half hours or two movies entirely, otherwise I'd go even so far to say it was better then X2. One thing I can't understand is how the hell did they manage to cock up the wolverine movie.

The film is based on the actors rather than the characters. That's the main reason.

Also it takes huge swathes of continuity and butchers them.

Finally, it's the X-Men. If a cartoon series can capture more humanity than a live action film, then you've really screwed up.

There's too many problems with X3 (too many key deaths, way too many characters that aren't interesting, lackluster action scenes, poor editing, etc). It's definitely the worst of the X-Men movies (yes, Wolverine was better in my opinion).

It's such a shame because the second X-Men is one of the best comic book movies ever made.
