Co-Op is a good-ish way to make friends if you are both open to helping each other and not, say, rushing on ahead to complete it alone.

I do enjoy playing Ghost Recon with my friends though. We have so many funny moments.

hmm...
I don't think friends should be required to get through it.

I also don't like the crap they pulled with Resistance 2.
:/

Things like Demolitions Squad in Red Faction is the kind of stuff I'll buy games for.
Also, WHY NO MULTIPLAYER IN THE NEW R&C GAMES???

Anyone. That's.....how you make friends online.
Or you could have existing friends IRL and on the internet. I normally never speak to anyone I play with online. In fact it was only once I've ever added anyone from a multiplayer game.

Lucky you. None of my friends IRL play XBL. So that's the only option I have. ;)

I play Nazi Zombies with strangers and they're usually pretty competent.

As long as they're not five year old Irish kids. What was that guy thinking?o_O

Besides Left 4 Dead and possibly Halo 3 (since it's 4-player as well), I can't see any time where playing a game Co-op with a complete stranger is a good idea. You are completely in the dark about how open your partner is to taking suggestion and direction, how skilled they are at the game, and how seriously they take the game itself.

Take Resident Evil 5. You friend can't get to their Xbox this week. You want to knock out a few levels while he's gone, and you need a Sheva, so you get an annoying kid who picked up the game this morning and can't play worth shit. You end up failing miserably and your fun is ruined by the terrible partner picked for you. Or worse yet they go off gung-ho and die, leaving you to clean up alone.

Actually...now that I think about it, maybe Left 4 Dead should only be played with friends too. :\
But I was going to Tashi Station to pick up some power converters.

When I've played co-op on gears 2 I had a very enjoyable time. Mabey I'm just a luck s.o.b. but I've only had 1 negative encounter with a person over xbox live. The rest of the people I play with are either great fun to talk to or jsut don't talk at all.

Neither do I, unless they speak to me first, and they are not idiots. I had added a couple of people from one game, and we went on to play others together. But then I went on holiday and they un-friended me.

I can definitely relate to not wanting to play co-op with a stranger. Its just... I wouldn't want to. The point of co-op for me is, as the title suggests, to co-operate with one of my friends. I like sitting (preferably on the same couch) and doing something together to reach a common goal. I think its a lot of fun and it can be a very good bonding experience.

As a rule, I only play with friends, it's just much more entertaining for me and reduces the dickhead quotient in many online games to zero. I sometimes play L4D with strangers, though, and as a rule I find that community to be very good.

Only game I play alot co-op is L4D, but don't know many people irl that own it for PC.

Used to play Age of Empires 3 in 2v2 teams with real life friends and that's something I wouldn't do without them, 1v1 only, don't trust strangers with decent strategy. Defiantly not when we have worked out our own and how with 2 people we can cover each other whilst the other does whatever etc.

WoW is MUCH better with people you know, but so is every game. Even if they are shit at it, id still play with my friends over random "1337" people.

Playing with or against strangers isn't bad until you find the jerks. Jerks in multiplayer/co-op to me consist of 1) anyone who decides to "teabag" anyone they kill and 2) getting fun out of ruining everyone elses fun (primarily in racing games).
