Not too thrilled with it, but I see potential there.

The controller seems too gimmicky for my liking. I wonder how developers will use it. People can only pay attention to so many screens at the same time, and I just think that for a lot of games (especially the fast paced action games) there would just be too many things going on if they started filling two separate screens. The streaming part is cool, but I'm not sure how well it would work in practice. Wii compatibility is... meh. Didn't care for the Wii, so I don't care about that part.

I'm concerned about timing and the core console's capability. Namely, can it compete with the next gen consoles that's going to be announced in the next two or so years? We know that Sony and MS are developing their next gen system, and that it'll likely be based on 2010 PC tech. Can the Wii U compete directly against them? Or is it only slightly more powerful than the current consoles? Can it handle future engines like the Frostbite 3 or Crytek 4? Wii U releases in 2012; it's possible that next gen console can land at soon as 2013. The Wii U looks like it will compete directly with X360 and PS3 for third party titles, what will Nintendo do when the third parties move on to the next gen and past the ability of the Wii U? For that matter, can it compete directly with the X360 and PS3, who have had 6 solid years to build a support base and library?

It looks like a solid console, I'm just wondering if it'll be caught in the middle of the two generations and not be able to compete effectively against either one.

Definitely good for me so far.

The name, well Sony won E3 for stupid names with PS Vita, so it really isn't too bad. I like the idea of the new controller thingy. I don't think too many games will try to use both screens at the same time, mainly due to not being able to look back and forth easily, but it's definitely got potential.

I was impressed at the raft of 3rd party game announcements for it, and the silence so far on 1st party. Currently all Nintendo are saying is Smash Brothers on WiiU and 3DS working together in some way.

We do need to come up with a decent nickname for "The New Controller" though. WiiUmote? WiiUpad? WiiUtroller.. hmm I dunno, but we got a year to think about it. :)

Agreed. The entire thing looks way too big. I would have been much more interested in it if it was more of a gamecube controller with a screen mounted above it. The way it is now just makes it look like it'll be a pain in the ass to hold.

As soon as I saw it being used to show the ball in Wii golf, I instantly imagined someone abliterating it with the golf club periferal.
It was so funny.

It's nice to see Nintendo going back to the trend of not making controlers that look like sex toys

This, basically.

Also add to that the new tech that will be revealed by MS/Sony in the next year or so, which will almost assuredly be significant step-ups from the hardware in the WiiU.

Oh, and it's the worst named console ever. WiiU? Seriously Nintendo?

I'm not thrilled with the controller, I'd hoped they'd lay off the gimmicks.

And yeah, it looks at this point like Nintendo will always be a generation behind in terms of power/graphics.

I don't know, i'm kinda glad to hear that a new smash bros is being made, but this Wii U is just dumb.

That device looks absolutely absurd. Why would I need this device? I don't own a Wii, but if Sony did that, I would have absolutely no use for this worthless add-on. It acts as a controller and a Wii, but still is used like a motion sensor for the Wii. I didn't know that the Wii couldn't sense motion. Playing it like a handheld defeats the purpose of having a 3DS, which was launched very recently by the way. So why buy this thing to play Wii games on the go? It's a brick, and can already be done. Wasn't that one of the selling points, besides 3D capabilities? Nintendo has just spewed out another round of gimmicks and remakes this E3. Ridiculous. I wish they would go back to the old days of the Gamecube and before that. When they weren't using Apple as a role model.

Phew, got that one out of my chest. I'm, done being angry at Nintendo now :)
Just to clarify
It's NOT a portable device, so it doesn't cut into the handheld market
It's NOT an add on. It's a completely new console that just has full backwards compatibility. If you don't have a Wii it doesn't mean anything.
Not trying to be snide they weren't completely clear in the press conference so it was easy to get confused

I think it could be really cool personally, however we won't know more after this holiday season since Nintendo is focused on marketing the 3DS.
It's actually kind of weird. You can see the console itself briefly in the background underneath a huge TV if watch a video.

It looks very similar to a Wii. About the same size, but they laid it flat in the video (where Wiis are usually upright on a stand, although it's possible to lay one down flat as well.)

The only thing that made it apparent that it wasn't a normal wii was that the sides were curved.

I do wonder what kind of specs it has now that allowed them to shove it in such a small box, because the cooling on even Mid-range PC graphics cards is generally very bulky.

This sounds cool. The only part I don't like is the integration to the 3DS for some games. Consoles should stay consoles, even if they had all the aspects of a portable device. The best part about Super Smash Brothers was that you couldn't have it everywhere. You needed to be in a house with your friends. This is going to become too much like the Xbox or PS3 and that saddens me.

They could do some cool stuff with it, so I'm hoping for the best. The could though, is keeping my bitter, bitter heart in check.

I've played the Wii a little and wasn't particularly impressed, so never got around to buying one. However, I'm curious about this, so may get it if it isn't too pricey.

As someone who was iffy on the name "Wii" This is the honestly worst name I've ever seen. I'm really not sure it could get much worse. Thanks for reinforcing the trend of intentional typos and text typing Nintendo.

I'm about half mad about it really.

I think it's looking great, but to be honest they should have shown the console itself alongside the controller. I've seen far too many people getting confused with this thing. If anything, those analogue sticks need to move.

I just wanted F-Zero...

Why should they show the console? The console unit is just a box with a bunch of crap shoved into it. The controller is where its at for this thing. You wouldn't show off Kinect by just making people stare at the sensor bar for a show would you? It's about the tech and what it can do, and the majority of what it can do is focused in the controller. So that's where you focus.

Though I will admit it was confusing. I was thinking for a while that it's a peripheral-type thing for the Wii that someone shunts its graphics forward, given you see Wiimotes and the Wii Balance Board in the E3 presentation video. So yeah, they could have been clearer, but focusing too much on the console unit itself is just wasting our time.

I would agree that maybe they need to go to a classic thing with the face buttons on the right-hand side being above the analog stick, like on all consoles. But it's a minor change and I don't see it being much of a problem really. Any weirdness from that change-around will be dissipated once people get used to it.

And yes, F-Zero would have been kick-ass to show off for this thing.

Horrible name, and the console itself doesn't look good. As for the controller, it seems very annoying to use.
However, I like it. The hardcore is there, the specs are great, it has online. They've finally caught up, which is making me very excited to see what the others will do.
Call me cautiously optimistic.

So many comments saying "no, there is no console, it's all in the controller" or "it's a portable tablet you can take anywhere" or "it's an add-on for the Wii you have already!"

A picture of the Wii U alongside the console would have cleared that all up.

It's an interesting piece of tech, but I do wonder how easily games can be designed for it. If it's as difficult to work with as the Playstation 3 used to be, there probably won't be a good line-up of games for it until well into its life cycle, and considering Nintendo is behind this console, its game line-up is in great enough danger as is.
