The optimist in me says yes, but the realist in me says no.
Sad really, how optimism and realism never go hand in hand.
Expect the worst while hoping for the best. That's how all good plans are made.
I try not to hope. Imo (and experience) hope leads to disappointment.
I try to do good as much I can. Trying to live a good life.

But (and this is on-topic again): there will always be people who disagree or even oppose my views, ideas and ways to get things done. Therefore I believe this idea of world peace will never happen.

Shame though
We should never get to a point where people no longer disagree. That would be awful. We need criticism and scrutiny to grow as a civilization (which as it happens is why i think Yahtzee is so popular). However I am confident that we will eventually get to a point were we realise that fighting is a pointless way of resolving an arguement.
It just doesn't work simply because you can't kill an idea. Especially not in the age of the internet. People can fight all they want but the idea that offends them will never die. So i figure when people get wise to this they will realize that the only thing left to do is open up and talk about it.

This is only one part of the problem of course but i think i could write a very long and very boring book on this subject so i wont go into it here......unless someone wants to discuss it some more.
Agreed. Critisism and arguments are vital. But there I think there will always be people who want to force ideas, rather than debate them.

It's a very interesting subject that -in my opinion- relies heavily on religion. This is because most civilisations on this planet are based upon some form of religious background. Every continent / part of the world has a different religion that forms the base for the current society. And in my experience it is close to impossible to change a religious person's
mind. (This is not judgement...it's a personal observation).

One of the keys to get this world peace paradigm is to eliminate religion. And I think that's an impossible task

Even after the buggers come along, we will still be fighting one another.

Cookie for reference.
Probably been said already, but Ender's Game. Do I still get a cookie?

The only way we would be all united under one flag or onenation would be if a super power was to subjugate everyone else and have disidents put down to keep people in check.

People by nature are self interested, many people out there opperate on a doctrine of 'if it isn't me or one of mine then fuck'em' (not everyone does, but a sadly large amount do).

I wouldn't expect us to be holding hands in a huge circle under the friendly skies and rainbows any day soon (at least not without someone holding a rifle to your back).

It's either come together after a major event; alien contact, disaster, war... or when one colonizes and claims a planet. Then that will be one planet.

Maybe once we discover alien life. Maybe.

Or when one country conquers the world of course.
Then all the conquered countries would be malcontented, and create revolutionary cells. Alien life is a more likely option

Hmm, I see your point

I eat lunch with my middle-school students (13-14 year olds) and we have small debates every day. This was a recent one. They seemed to agree that if zombies or aliens or some other obscure sci-fi disaster happened, there's a chance that the earth might unite but considering all kinds of factors such as economic status amongst several areas of the world, or disagreements in political orientation it's very unlikely otherwise.

All the people who voted 'Yes' are fools. Simple, really.

Believe me, even with aliens coming to kill us all, it's very improbable we'd all unite under one banner.

Yeah I've noticed that to, it can be very frustrating. However religion is becoming less of a factor these days, most people i meat in college are athiest and that's not a coincidence. The more educated people become the less of an influence religion has. It true that some people will never change thier minds no matter what, however I for example used to be very religious and I got over it, so there must be hope for at least most people.

It'll happen when aliens show up and we have to be something bigger than our petty squabbles to either be a player in interstellar politics (a la Star Trek) or fight off the Little Green Men (a la classic War of the Worlds-style sci-fi.)

Only 3 ways for this to happen.

1 - Alien contact, whether it's friendly or hostile.
2 - Major disaster, possibly war
3 - A god-emperor arises and conquers all... For the Emperor!
