i remember the days when i had to worry about microsoft. now i run my computer the way i want it. because i run linux, an OS about choice and freedom, if you dont like your desktop enviroment, you just download a new one or tweak it untill you do.

but windows 8 is probably going to flop, from what i see the genral opinion towards it is negative

Not anymore. Upgrading from OSX 10.6.8 and above to 10.8 costs $20.99 (AU)/$19.99 (US)/£13.99 (GB)...

Don't ask me why the Australian price is higher despite the fact that the Australian dollar is above the US dollar...

That is...actually pretty reasonable, compared to the difference in price for things like an Adobe Suite here and pretty much anywhere else in the world.

It has been a while since I messed around with Hackintoshes errr...upgraded my totally real and actual Apple Macintosh personal computer which is totally genuine and everything. $40 is still better than the $160 or so the upgrade to Win7 was...I'm most impressed with the option to upgrade the Preview, I'm jumping on that with both feet. A DirectX 11 capable OS for $40, that works well on a TV? I'll take that.

I don't think it will be as bad as everyone says it will be, but I don't think it will be good either. It will come out incredibly mediocre and after five years of patches, it will be okay.

Unless they send a Microsoft representative with a gun round to my house and hold me up at gunpoint to change installations from 7 to 8, I don't really give a fuck about it.

I doubt they'd do it this rapidly, XP was pretty old before they did that.It was still a shitty move on their part as XP was a solid OS and a fan favourite but there was some kind of tech reason too iirc.

They lost me with their talk of a Windows app store. But I don't see not upgrading affecting my gaming habits too badly. It largely means no proprietary IPs, which for me is not a big loss.

It'll probably have a lot of difficulties on launch, because it is a rather different approach to how windows usually operates. Hopefully they'll iron it out with time and it'll be as decent as Windows 7.

I really wish they wouldn't rush into 8 so quickly. 7's stable. 7's decent. 7 works well enough and has had most of the kinks and bugs worked out. Now they'll move to a new system and we'll have to waste time all over again trying to fix the inevitable problems.

7 had its flaws, some of them annoying, some of them workable. Hopefully 8 will be an improvement on them and not just having the same system with added bells and whistles. Because despite how much I love bells and whistles when I'm morris dancing, they just get in the way if they're on a PC, especially when you're trying to type things.

Video games in general cost more in AU, because they have more disposable income, at least according to my friend that moved there several years ago. Far higher minimum wage means far higher prices for games, since companies can get away with it.

Edit: Not that Windows 8 is a video game, but we could infer that software in general costs more there than in the US.

Using Windows 8 right now, I think it will work really well for tablets - I'm already saving up for Surface - but on my desktop which has no touch screen it can be a little bit clunky and unintuitive at times.

Not touching it with a barge pole, its great if you are using it on a tablet but on a desktop PC with a mouse & KB its shit. It takes longer to navigate to anything than windows 7 does. If they removed all the touch screen crap for the desktop version then I think a lot more people would be willing to use it, after all the back end improvements are good its just the UI and navigation that lets it down.

Personally? I am immediately upgrading to Windows 8. In addition, I will be purchasing the new Surface tablet as soon as I possibly can. (Pro version with Windows 8, of course!). (I've been waiting a long time for a tablet to come out with a proper OS, that you can also use for work!)

I really do not understand all the hate that Windows 8 is getting. Maybe people are just afraid of change? To be honest, there is nothing you can do on Windows 7 that you can't do on Windows 8.

As a Windows developer myself, I love EVERYTHING that Microsoft has presented to us in Windows 8. Everything from the App Store to the METRO UI. That is not to mention the way you develop for it! The developing experience for Windows RTM just leaves iOS and Android programming behind in the dust!

The new METRO UI (Windows RTM) is sleek, fast and damn good looking. It is obviously meant to be used for tablets, but it would be a HUGE mistake by Microsoft not to integrate that new UI directly into Windows 8 itself (If you cannot see why that is, you are really beyond help ).

As long as Windows 7 and Windows 8 are treated as equals, I don't care, because I'd really like W8 on a tablet. I would DESPISE Windows 8 on my desktop though. W7 for desktop all the way!
