I can't exactly blame this woman for thinking it was ok, if you are new to this and you just see it there you think "yey i'm online now". I think she has leant a lesson and will be buying a router she dousn't seem like a criminal.

My neighbors aren't close enough to steal my internet, and even if they were I only turn the wireless on if I'm using my laptop. My ISP told me about these massive antennas that people were using to find other people's wireless access points from across several miles... which is a bit scary. I'd definitely notice if someone was using my internet though.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I have stolen wireless internet before for my Handy Dandy iPod Touch... but it was never for a long time. It's fun to scan networks and see what you get in restaurants and stuff. You'd be surprised at how many are unprotected.

Nope, never. In fact, I had some quite old neighbours who didn't know how to protect their network properly(I noticed this when setting up my house's new network and saw theirs without the lock icon). I knew who they were so I just told them how to protect it and offered to help them do it. Funny thing is, they mentioned to my mum that their internet "goes faster since your Ross looked at it".

I tend not to use anyone else's connections even at places which encourage it like internet cafés. I carry my laptop around but I don't need the internet to get my work done when I have textbooks provided for me.

I don't but I am convinced someone is stealing mine even though the wireless is not enable. How is 20kb/s normal on a 3mb connection when I was getting 50kb/s when the company had us on 1mb?

my wireless is a bit temperamental when I try to use it with my iPod, so sometimes i use my neighbours.
they know I do it though, i told them and they said that was fine.

I leave mine open on purpose. It's a pain in the ass to add WEP keys to all my devices, and since I'm on super fast fiber optic, I welcome anyone to borrow my connection because they sure as hell won't kill it. Besides, I only have one neighbor who is in range anyway.

No but i remember when our school gave us free access to their internet once. We tripled the yearly download limit in two weeks. So many episodes of Dragonball Z.

I've never had the need really. Apart from at my Grandmas house, but that's not heavy browsing, possibly just to check here then Facebook.

Well in the the flat I'm staying, the internet we're supposed to use is from the hotel that owns it across the way. So I'm paying for the crap quality of stolen internet, ads every 5 minutes before lettimg me reconnect.

Worst. Internet. Ever.

I've used unsecured wifi on my ipod occasionally, but that's about it. I know one of my friends has been riding on the wifi of OUR LOCAL LIBRARY for a while though. His connection is so much faster than mine.

I'll do it when it's absolutely necessary (i.e. using a hotel's wi-fi to check Mapquest when I'm lost). Otherwise, I keep to my own network.
