Essentially, they are the same. It just depends on what atmosphere and setting you want. WoW is more gritty and depressing in a WWII setting while MW is in a modern terrorist setting, and the tone is more "upbeat" I guess since it is about "freeing ourselves from terrorists" rather then "war is terrible."

Spelled Modern wrong, and World at War is such a terrible excuse for a sequel. Nazi Zombies is the only thing amazing on it. But wait! You have to trudge through the terrible campaign to get it. Oh well. I did. Only good part was the Russian missions. The Japanese ones are so terrible I literally started crying blood. And it HURT.

I bought CoD4 and never really got into it.
I beat the campaign the day I bought it and just wasn't feeling the online play.

WAW had one of my favorite video game levels ever. The first Russian level where you're scurrying around in the ruins of Stalingrad (or Leningrad, I forget), hiding from nazis and sniping at people. Straight out of "Enemy at the Gates". It was awesome, very immersive and the Mosin Nagant rules. I could play the rest of the in that mind set, "I'm Demitri, awesome but quiet nazi-murderer (murderer of nazis, not a nazi who is a murderer)" and made it a point to be the hero of the party. That was fun.

I sort of refuse to acknowledge Treyarch's attempts at making Call of Duty games. Their games are the low points of the series. Long live Infinity Ward.
Amen.

I loved the original COD for the PC, and when COD4 came out, it was so cool.
When I heard they were making a new COD, and it was going back to WW2, I thought it would be COD all over again, but with the COD4 engine.
But COD5 disappointed me a lot. I thought they could still make the old WW2 weapons fun, even after playing with modern weapons in COD4, but they messed it up pretty bad in unexpected ways. And the vehicles are so disappointing. Just tanks on small maps that are difficult to destroy? What a rip. I loved vehicles in the original COD, because they had jeeps and other stuff that could be used strategically, and the tanks were tough, but easier to take down. So it was all cool running into a buildings an dashing through allyways to flank the tanks rumbling through the streets and ambushing them with a few good rockets from a second story window.
COD5 was such a disappointment for me. The graphics weren't even that much better. Was it even in 60 frames-a-sec anymore? It didn't look like it.

Ugh, no brainer. Modern Warfare.

Although with WaW I got to say "No Nazi is safe from Chicago Ted" at some point.

Modern Warfare is far better than World at War in my opinion. After having been treated to the joys of guns that are accurate and can do more than get your enemies attention, going back to World at War wasn't an viable option.
