Forget them both. Go out, buy Guild Wars, play that until Guild Wars 2 is released and then just play Guild Wards 2 for the rest of your life. Simple.

LOTRO:
Positive
-Patched often
-Fun
-Nice small community with kind players
-Has house and guild house system :D
-LOTR is awesome
-You can get TP free*
-No monthly subscription fees

Negative
-You have to buy TP* for many of the features

*TP = Turbine Points = Currency in-game bought with IRL cash or achieved in game by completing various challenges and stuff.
This all depends on how easy to complete the challenges are. Cause if they're impossibly difficult to earn, then that could cause problems. But if they're easy enough to get, but just difficult enough to give you a challenge, in my eyes that just adds another element to the gameplay of the thing
You can earn TPs by completing deeds, which at low (actually all) levels consist of "Kill X ". You can also get them from completing X number of quests in a zone (also a Deed). If you want to grind it out, you certainly can, but they do accumulate on a pretty steady basis.

Having played both, I'll be sticking with LOTRO for now. The community is really top-notch and the story and questing are really tight. It feels more immersive to me. There also isn't such a push for end game content - the journey is as much a part of the game as the end-game raiding (which is there, make no mistake. It's just not the be-all, end-all that it is in WoW).

Since LOTRO is free, why not download it and give it a try - the starter areas are fully available and will get you to at least 20, probably closer to 30 before you would need to think about spending points on a quest pack.(accumulated through finishing Deeds) are similar to Talents in WoW, but there is a lot more variety in how you can mix them, depending on playstyle and preference.

I'll likely end up re-upping my WoW subscription at some point (if only to get to 85), but right now, I'm enjoying LOTRO. It's a nice change from Azeroth.

Some are like "Slay xx of that animal type" or "Use that ability xxx times"

I agree with above poster that explained the deeds.
Also seems like I got Cataclysm as an early Christmas present, time to try ;P

Usually along the lines of kill 100 bats/wolves/orcs/etc get 5 points kill another 200 to get 10 points, complete 15 quests in an area get 15 points, find 6 landmarks get 15 points, things like that. It's an extra reward for the grind you are already doing basically.

You also gain standing with various factions while doing quests for them or collecting reputation items dropped by mobs. If you get enough standing your status goes up and you get more points as well as the opportunity to buy better equipment.

I voted LOTRO partly because I have never tried WOW and don't really intend to. The community seems pretty friendly and willing to give advice or help complete quests. You can even get randomly healed by people that just happen to be passing. There is/was an Escapist group on the Crickhollow server but last time I checked they'd all given up.

If anyone does decide to play LOTRO read this first for future reference: http://lotro.mmorsel.com/2010/02/guide-to-lotro-mounts.html

is this a real question?
Unfortunately yes. I wanna play an MMO again and loved both of these games the first time I played them, so I'm truly stuck here.

It really boils down to whether you think you want more of a refined, balanced game or a close-knit, RP based game.

Either way you cut it, you'll be paying a lot. WoW's controls are tighter, the game itself is more cooperative with whatever system you're using, and the PvP is better. LotrO is more RP based, and the community is much smaller, so people tend to dick off less.

If you're interested solely in PvE, pick the one that interests you: they're literally the exact same thing. (Alright, that might be a lie. The classes play differently, but you prepare for everything and play through everything the exact same way. LotrO seems to level you up faster, though that might be because Cataclysm isn't out yet and because Turbine wants that 1-50 free phase to end asap.) If one of the stories seems interesting to you, play that one. Otherwise, look for something else you want.

Just a note based on MaG iiC 3E's post:

Turbine just opened the free levels from 1-50 to 1-65. They also threw in another zone (Lone Lands).

Otherwise, you're spot on - PvP isn't a focus for LOTRO. It's about getting the NPC bad guys, not fighting amongst yourselves.

i'd vote no to either one. i've heard they added some really cool stuff to WoW with Cataclysm, but as Easy Street mentioned above, the player base of that game has way too many teens and tweens, which means finding competent, friendly people to play with is next to impossible.

i really liked LotRO back when it was still subscription based, and it has a lot of great things going for it, but the way they run that game now that it's f2p is really skeevy. you'll actually end up paying more now than if you subscribed.

seriously, either avoid mmos altogether, or wait for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Is Cataclysm making WoW not look like shit anymore?
Yeah there are several good features in Cataclysm, including more characters with voices and the ending of idle and boring NPC's. Also they use the phasing technology ALOOOT! (Especially if you play as Worgen and perhaps Goblin)

I played LoTRO for a while last year, but I just could never get completely into it. The game has an incredible RP community, Landroval Server, but aside from the story quests there was nothing that kept me invested.

Thus far with Cataclysm I have been really impressed with the quality of the story telling that Blizzard is finally starting to demonstrate. To top it off I love the art-style that WoW has (the pseudorealism the LoTRO shoots for is always an immersion breaker for me).

Get the free trials and see which one you like better would be my suggestion.
