Heck no. I'm 16, and I have a (hopefully) long life ahead of me. Plus I'm a selfish bastard. And I don't believe in the afterlife. So yeah, that's three strikes and out, I'm afraid.

Sorry mate, I'm a little too selfish to do something that drastic. I'd much rather enjoy my own life...

A complete stranger? No. Period. Why the hell would I?

Wow, I didn't realize how many selfish people we have on the Escapist.
You think that a desire to preserve your own life is selfish? That's fucked up.
It's not like life is so fantastic. It's not something I would cling to if letting go of it would help someone else.

What I wonder is why so many Escapists cling to it as they do.
Because many of us are greedy and don't find this whole thing called living to be all that bad! ^_^

OT - No, I wouldn't leave my kids fatherless for a situation I know nothing about. Now, if it were for my wife or my kids, then yes.

Probabally not. If it was more than one, (and a significant amount) I'd consider it, but really, in the sort of situation where some people could be about to die, and you're in the proximity, I doubt there would be much time to consider anything but getting the hell out of there.

No way. Why the hell would I value someone else's life more than my own? Nothing is more precious to me than my own life.

If I was dying to save more than one person, then maybe.

Erhm yes it is? Statisticly it is VERY rare, especialy sentient life. Besides, it's the most important thing you have basicly, what is more important than life? Unles you meant YOUR life is not so fantastic. In which case I'd advise you to seek counseling ..

Anyway, the day I die for someone else it would be someone important to me. Even entire truckloads of strangers can go fuck themselves really. I'll feel sorry for you but sure as hell not dieing for you, people die all the time, tough luck.

Fuck that, I wouldn't give my life for my own bloody mother so why would I for a random stranger?

A stranger might as well not exist. People you have never met may just be a hoax created by the people I do know. Every human being besides me may just be an illusion for I cannot know for sure they can think. I think so I am.

Is the stranger an important person who will make a difference? Will that person do something important? You do know that you are able to do something important.

And the most important justification of keeping myself alive: The most important person in the entire universe is myself. If I die, the world is no more to me.
If you die the world is no more to you but that doesn't matter because I can still live without second or third persons. (read "I" as yourself if you don't want to get the impression that I, Monocle Man, am self-centred. Though that may be the wrong impression.)

Statistically it is VERY rare to get hit by a bolt of lightning, too.

What is it that makes life so wonderful, for you?

No. Taking your own life is a bigger sin than taking someone else's and why should I care more about that person than myself? If I kill myself, I know that my friends and family will be sad, I will let myself lose many, many happy years of my life. Why am I less deserving of life than that person? In fact, when I start sacrificing myself, why don't they then also try to save ME?

It sound cruel, but why should I care about that other person/stranger?

You didn't answer his question, so why should he answer yours? Also, you can't put what is wonderful about life into words, into an internet post. It just is. All the good times, all the people you meet, all enjoyable things in life, everything. You sound a bit bitter.

Yes. I don't care about myself, but I feel horrible when other people are dying. And all my childhood heroes would be very dissappointed in me otherwise.
