Blasphemers! I don't need the ass end of a weapon in my face to tell where I am firing. I also don't get the whole "we need iron sights to hit anything using a gamepad" argument. I'm not a Halo fan but I've seen people hit all kinds of stuff without the CoD crutch, and I've played Half-Life for a decade or so and never felt the need to introduce iron sights, when it was introduced in Battlegrounds 2 and Day of Defeat Source, it felt out of place for all but the most sniper campyish of aiming situations.

It would be fine if it was optional but not important (A La Bioshock).

This is half life, it's about throwing physics objects around like mad while occasionally doing drive-by mowdowns of the local combine law enforcement. Not a "precision military shooter". Ditching the crosshairs for having to manually aim down the sights would disrupt the flow of it for the worse.

It's not needed.
The suit helps Gordon with aiming, negating the need of this function.

The thing is, we've already established that Gordon Freeman is more badass than Alex Mason could ever hope to be, because one can shoot perfectly fine from the hip and one can't. Changing that now would be like having Duke Nukem's ego rebuild itself by hiding behind cover for a few seconds. Probably while chewing bubble gum.

No, ironsight gaming is the way of the future.

There were mods, like Fakefactory's mod for instance that add ironsights to the game. I cant see Valve making Half Life still seem relevant without ironsights.
personally i am against iron sights as a must!
the mods you where talking about would have made it a choice to have them or not!
so they should include them but not make them a must for the player to have!

they should let the user choose what experence they wish to experience and track the stats(companies like tracking stats).

the stats tracked should be:
what mode did the user pick on the first play though (with or without)
has the user picked both modes (yes no,with no,without)
and how often does the user pick each option? (with% without%)

So if I'm using my right mouse button to Iron sight, I'm using the (blank) button to secondary fire?

And which button is the (blank) button?

Sure I could re-map my mouse to it has all the stuff on it, but why should I? I right click to use secondary fire. If I want to aim at something I stop being retarded and point the damn cross hairs at the enemy, not rely on jamming a gun up my nose to get a shot off.

I guess not, but it would feel out of place.

What would ruin the shooting in HL is a two weapon limit.

yeah damm straight!

i just have this feeling that i might now hear the suit say "aiming assistance override" and the aiming becomes a manual wobble wobble correction
because some idiot decides iron sights are the way forward but instead of hitting my targets i get the flatline sound from the suit becuase they got me instead and if it happens to be multiplayer all i will see is nOOb repeating itself on the chat and realise these guys take themselves way to seriously as number one

anyway i think that if they did make iron sights nessary in the game and i foolishly brought the game i would only use the crowbar as surely they cant put iron sight on a melee weapon?

Of course it would.

Iron Sights ruin almost any game at all. It's just an irritating feature of MoH and CoD that seeped into general usage somehow.

iron sights should be removed from any modern game, even if it means hip-fire until you get a module
they're just perpetually in the way they annoy me more than they help me, it's like trying to aim with a blob of mud on your sights
i want to see the target not all the shiny dramatic scratches on my rubbish sights.

honestly the only excuse to ever use iron-sights is if you don't have something better, and you can buy a laser pointer from anywhere, hell I HAVE ONE FOR MY BB-GUN! ( it fits on standard rails and is adjustable ). you could buy one off ebay for $5

( and don't even comment on covert sniping with a laser ) if you took the damn sniper scope off the gun, why the hell would you replace it with an IRON SIGHT !?!?!!?!? WHY ??????
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M24_Sniper_Weapon_System

^ standard military / police weapon, comes with scope. because you know, it needs one.

and what really makes me laugh is when game designers butcher standard weapon designs so they 'fit the game style'

i've seen many a p-90 stripped of it's default ( and pretty effective ) optical sight in favour of a no module rail design ( it's a great idea for adaptability... but why would you EVER do that unless you HAD the modules????? )

it's plain stupidity.

Considering every modern FPS has ironsights, a future Half Life game not having them would be seen as a shortcoming. Thats like a first person shooter being released nowadays without reloading despite FPS games not really having them until Half Life 1 was released.

I absolutely hare iron sights.

It's not that it's really bad or that it is difficult.

I find it god damn tedious to use.
Just let me shoot the damn gun, everything does not have to be realistic.

It's just unnecessary. It works in some games, not in others. I think HL doesn't need iron sights.

I don't get all the controversy about iron sights. It just doesn't seem to me like a game changer. While I'd prefer HL to stay as it is, i don't think that adding iron sights would change anything.

It wouldn't work for Half-Life, but I hope they implement it in the new Counter-Strike!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Counter-Stike doesn't need to change its gameplay. All that is needed are some new maps, weapons and a tad of rebalance. Heck mabye even some more player skins. With iron sighting it could easily turn into a crappy battered COD.

OT: Half life doesn't need iron sighting, they add nothing to the game and would break the flow of the gameplay.

Also for all the people saying the floating reticle is unrealistic...Gordon Freeman is wearing a HEV suit; it has a helmet with a heads up display!

No. Not exactly but actually zooming with most of the weapons will really help. I just finished playing HL2 for the fifth time this week and I couldn't help but notice where I ran into a lot of situations where zooming with SMG would've definitely helped a bit more.

For HL3, I think Valve should include the option of what type of aiming you prefer. Just like in Crysis 1 where you had the option between regular iron-sights and "simple iron-sights" that only zooms the sight without looking down the iron-sights.
That makes me think of Fallout as of late by just a slight zoom in. It'd be cool like that xD
