I hate iron sights. Why do you need iron sights? So you don't see the middle of the screen? To have delay before shooting because you aim too slowly?

When you look at it from a gameplay perspective, all it does is add a ~0,5sec delay before you can use your weapon. And block a part of your screen.

It wouldn't work for Half-Life, but I hope they implement it in the new Counter-Strike!
Didn't a few of the weapons in CS have something like irn sights? the Steyr-AUG and the terrorist equivilant? you right clicked and got a slight zoom and more accuracy.

As for half-life, don't think i would hurt, as long as they didn't remove the alternate fire avalible on many of the weapons. Don't see it adding a lot either so i'm kinda indifferent.

They work fine in something like COD where you'll spend half of your time behind cover waiting for your health to regenerate while popping up intermittently to fire a few shots off
You obviously haven't played enough CoD. You die very quickly and even if you are trying to cover and stick out for a few seconds, if someone has their sights trained on you, you'll die without getting back to cover (assuming they have decent skills, ofc).
I was largely talking about single player, and the sort of players who never play online because they can't cut it/don't like it (which is a lot of them). Anyone worth their salt in online play is either just going to get used to hip firing as is and learn to quickly pop into iron sights to take a shot, or take steady aim as a perk. And considering I sank probably well over 100 hours into COD4 back in the day, you shouldn't assume someone has little experience with something when you have no evidence of it.

It's a moot point, iron sights aren't really Valve's style.
It wouldn't exactly say that. Of course there's a point to discussing it. There's always the possibility of Valve improving itself. And establishing the popular opinion is a crucial part of that.
I see your point, but the thing is that most of valve's games (half life, left 4 dead, team fortress) are fast and frantic and don't lend themselves to precision as well as other games with iron sights features do. Call of duty, for all it's high octane chases and explosions, requires a lot more hiding behind cover and picking off your assailants deliberately, while half life is more point and shoot. The style of the games just can't facilitate a feature like that without changing the whole nature of the games.
Oh yeah, I definitely agree with you and in fact I wish more games would be like that. But there's no but; it's still worth being discussed.

What the fuck is this future Half Life game that you speak of? Valve seems too busy studying Duke Nukem Forever's marketing strategy to release a new fucking game.

uh... why exactly does half life need iron sights?
I can't think of any reasons either It's not often I remember having to be a marksmen carefully aiming shots in the games.

They might be useful against combine soldiers, but other than that you don't have as many enemies with particular vulnerable spots, so aiming is a waste of time- especially when you have a hunter or antlion guard barreling down your ass. At those times I think it would be ideal to not have your nose glued to the gun barrel.

I dunno. Maybe in a different shooter franchise, but I honestly can't see Half-Life using iron sights. It doesn't really look like it needs them.

Honestly, I have a hard time accepting that adding or not having Iron sights will make/break a game. So if Iron sights was added to Half-Life, I dont see it as being ruined...

It would ruin Half-Life... as I've come to know it. If, per say, Episode 3 was to come out, [pffft] having iron-sights would just be weird and an uncalled for change of gameplay to what is basically an expansion. When OpFor came out for the original HL they didn't introduce flying mechanics. If they ever decide to make an actual HL3 and they're going for a more realistic approach then, yes, I could see that working. But right now I'll just leave it to the modders.

Iron sights probably wouldn't ruin it, but they would slow the gameplay down without adding anything.

The game would be exaclty the same as it is now. Iron sights dont define the type of gameplay, now if the question was if it had a third person perspective, double jump or cover system then I would care about answering the question, those things do change the pace of the game.

If you would make a decision on a game based on the existence of lack of existence of iron sights, I would be forced to believe that you're not worth any human's time.

Unless it was a simulation game, which HL/HL2/HL3 (?) is not.

An actual animation for the scoped crossbow and maybe an ironsight for a new rifle that can handle some decent accuracy... okay. But not for the rest of the weapons. They are close-range, mid-range at most, even the SMG and the Combine Rifle.

And for those who say it wouldn't change gameplay... common, just watch a video of COD and then one of HL. Fights in Half-Life are designed to be extremely close-ranged and fast. Stopping to aim with an ironsight WOULD change the pace of the game significantly.

So yeah --an actual animation for the scoped crossbow and, who knows, maybe an accurate rifle with an ironsight for the very few long-range fights. Perfect. Just not for the rest of the weapons. Not because it would 'ruin the game', but because it would be superfluous --unless they changed how levels are, in which case they would have replaced the whole HL formula except for the in-game cinematics. If they just keep the same type of levels, ironsights just wouldn't be used.
