I recently wondered what Minecraft would be like if it had better graphics and decided that it's current graphics have charm and are perfect for the game. Do you agree?

No, its fine as it is.

And if you think it isnt, theres any number of texture packs and block reskin mods you can use to change things up.

You can't improve THAT much with a game that consists of you digging and placing blocks.

Well, at least I don't think you can...

Well, given that the entire building system revolves around blocks, a change to the graphics system would cause massively changes to the gameplay. If it managed to retain the same complexity, you'd end up with one hell of a game, though it would lose the user friendly lego-esque charm of Minecraft.

' Basically what I mean.

There's a mod pack for better graphics on Minecraft. It makes it look eerily realistic. O-o I didn't like it at all. I think the simple graphics work for it.

It also lags your computer... xD

So no, I don't think Minecraft would be better with better graphics. :D

For the last time Minercaft does not have bad graphics quality, it was chosen to be retro-style by notch, and it does a very good job at it. I think of bad graphicsquality as plain, uncreative textures/ simply ugly design.

Minecraft's graphics are very moddable: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgChLzq7t-s

Minecraft works as well as it does because of it's graphics.

The only other game I can think of that offers anything approaching the sheer freedom to build anything you can imagine is Second Life (leaving aside the question of whether or not that is a game.) SL's problem is it sets the bar too high - to be able to build something truly good from scratch you basically have to already be an actual artist and/or 3D graphics designer and/or coder.

Minecraft keeps it simple, meaning anyone can build anything.

No need to change the graphic.

The one reason is best explained by Escapist's own "Extra Credits" and their "Graphics vs Aesthetics" episode:

It's all about the aesthetic.

If it didn't break my poor computer, I'd love to play Minecraft with better graphics.

But it's still an amazing game nonetheless. :D

There was actually an even more detailed graphics mod somewhere, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

OT: Yes, the game would probably be slightly better with improved graphics, but it would only be a very minor improvement. I'd much rather have a game-play update, even an extremely minor one, because graphics just aren't very important.

Then again, I spend half my gaming time staring at Ascii characters, so feel free to completely disregard my opinion.

Sometimes I use a texture pack, sometimes I don't. Currently I am using DokuCraft but really it depends on what I feel like using. I don't think it makes the game better, Minecraft is 100% gameplay to me, it makes it look nicer in situations though.

No. It wouldn't be WORSE, but I feel like that's the kind of feature that makes people go "Oh look, Minecraft" rather than "Oh look, some weird 8bit piece of ****". So it adds to uniqueness.
