Considering the recent Extra credits debacle, would you be OK with the escapist hosting ads if it means the content creators are guaranteed to get paid and the future of the site is made a bit more certain.

And if being a publisher club member meant you wouldn't get any ads would you become one?

Yep I'm fine with ads. I love this site so it's best that it gets as much support as it needs. the only reason I haven't bought pub club is because my mom doesn't trust the site.

Umm... Unless The Escapist is targeting me specifically, they already have ads. I get them sometimes before a video, with an associated graphic ad next on the side of the window.

I'd be fine with them. In fact, I want to bring the ads back as an option for PC members, seeing as if we turn the "Motto of the moment" box off, we just get a big white space, that's ugly as hell. I'd much rather be looking at an ad there instead of a big white space.

I am fully against Ads and any attempt at trying to sell me garbage that I will not be persuaded to by.

Thats why I bought pub club amongst other reasons.

But seriously... I stand by it, Advertising is a horrible thing and absolutely insufficient to make a business model around.

As for trusting the site... You could always point out that the escapist is almost breaking the top 1000 on alexa rankings. Its not like you would see a highly untrustworthy site ranked anywhere near that high.

Ads are ads. I don't like them, but it's not like I just can't wait out the extra twenty seconds every other free video I watch. I usually have more than one thing blaring at once, so it's hard to feel too impatient.

Like right now: Dark Knight, Persona 3 Portable, some videogame music, this thread.

That's what I'm wondering myself.

I see plenty of ads and isn't not seeing ads one of the benefits of joining the Pub club?

Sorry, you confuse me. There are ads on the Escapist. They use as many as flipping possible without being an eyesore to the community at large. What are you suggesting here?

I hate ads in general, but at least The Escapist seems to have ads a little more relevant to my interests.

I cannot stand the Captcha ads however.

I'm already getting some ads (the bottom bar thingy) but if they manage to not make it dirty and disgusting looking with ads, I'm fine with that.

Yeah. It's a pretty big benefit.

I don't see what the big deal is. I've never had an ad on this site that I couldn't [X] out of. Maybe they make the Escapist take a little extra time to load, but what's an extra few seconds. My internet at home is absolute shit, and I do just fine.

I don't care as long as they aren't horrible obtrusive and "in my face" like the Gankai (sp?) ones for Dead Space 2. God, those things were fucking annoying.

As opposed to giant ads for games that take up both sid of the screens and frame videos every now and again? How's about the ad I'm looking at in the frelling security captcha? Maybe the standard bar type that's for cereal right now at the top. Is that what you meant? One more! The annoying little thirty second or so long ads what run before videos? I really don't see how they could have more than that without turning people away.

You mean additional ads? Those who live in the US and don't run adblock already get hit hard enough with ads to at least make my (pretty decent) computer chug with the effort.

But hey, if I can see it in legally-binding, screencapped, printed and filed writing that all their contributors under contract will be paid on time, I would absolutely support more ads. But the escapist should realize more revenue is half of the puzzle. The other half in a tough economy is cutting staff and working their existing people harder. They definitely haven't been doing the first, dunno about the second.

It works fine for the largest sites with the largest traffic. Like EA, they don't need you to want or like the commercial, they just want you to remember it and get you talking about it. They want their brand in the public consciousness, regardless of if it's associated with a good or bad experience.

I think the site would have to charge a hell of a lot more than $20 per year(per member) if it didn't have ad revenue to keep the site going. To survive without the ads, I imagine each and every member would have to have a $20 per month subscription at least.

EDIT: I don't like the ads but they do keep it cheap to avoid them, $20 is worth it to never see the ads[sub](without breaking the E's terms of use I mean)[/sub]

I'm used to seeing ads on any website I go to. The only ones I'd have issues with are ones that expand to take up the screen until you find a way to shrink them, or float to the middle of the screen so you can't see anything until it's closed or drifts away. Noisy ads I can deal with unless they're crazy loud and looped.

I haven't seen an add on the internet in years. Get with the times, mang.

(I'm also a Pub Club member, despite using adblockers and script controllers. I support the sites I like, and refuse to be annoyed by the ones I don't.)

They already have a bunch of well placed ads. If they added more it would start to get to the point of annoyance, and that's the opposite effect you want your ads to have. I'm a member, so it wouldn't really effect me until the end of the year anyway.
