Apparently I am not the only one exposed to those, thank Buddha. I am in full support of websites actually making money through ads, but popups are pretty universally regarded as just a breach of internet etiquette. Especially when they take up half the screen, are animated, and don't even keep to their own windows. Thankfully, I seem to only be getting the other types of ads now.

As long as it isn't completely insane, for example I thought the meebo bar (I think thats what it was) was a little much. You could also consider if the people want to save the site and don't mind paying to help than why not raise the Pub Club memberships by $5 or $10. I hear so many people say something similar to "If you like the site what is $10 or so a month to support it?" Well what's $5 or $10 more dollars a month to support a site you like?

Uh yeah! The fact that the escapist seems to not be able to pay people is very startling, anything to help that problem I'm all for!

Honestly, I think they should try a new kind of business model, since advertising clearly isn't working for them. Ads are overall a pretty shit system for revenue generation, as it is dependent on the user not ad blocking (and seeing as how easy it is to ad block ESPECIALLY among the tech savvy). It's an honor system that relies on trusting the customer, and one thing you learn in business is you NEVER trust your customer.

Perhaps do something like Gamebreakers.tv does, where you basically "tip" for whatever you think the content is worth (I think TWiT started that... not sure). This works well since it not only generates decent profit, but it also really helps encourage the overall content to get better as well. Anything else besides ads really. This business model just isn't working for this site, so they should stop TRYING to make it work and instead seek a new one. I get a certain sense that the people in charge of this site probably never went to business school, which could be either a good thing or a bad thing.

You're not allowed to use (or promote) adblockers, it's in the rules, as the Escapist needs them to function.

I personally don't like ads either, but putting up with them is one of the site rules, not doing really annoys the mods (and presumably large numbers of members that accepted them as part of the site, or joined pubclub to avoid them).

Considering the recent Extra credits debacle, would you be OK with the escapist hosting ads if it means the content creators are guaranteed to get paid and the future of the site is made a bit more certain.

And if being a publisher club member meant you wouldn't get any ads would you become one?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but are these colorful banners I see in the margins, the little promotional videos in the captchas, and the little trailers before the videos not forms of advertising? Maybe I've been mistaken this whole time...

This should be against the rules. Your question in the title and in the OP post suggest that if you are fine with ads then yes. but the poll question points to a no. It is misleading.

thread title:
Poll: Would you be OK with ADs on the escapist?

YES.

Poll question:
Would ads on the escapist bug you?

NO.

OT:

I dont see how the small amount of ads thats here is truly that annoying. I have had maybe 4 that scroll from the side and block my screen in 6 monthes. i have more issues with major news sites that have a banner ad that scrolls the whole page down 20 or 30 lines compared to the background ad and 1 banner ad up top and a box ad on bottom I normaly see here. CNN.com has twice as many ads compared to here as an example.

As for ads before the video? That i dont mind at all and is commonplace today. if this was the only site doing that then maybe I would find it annoying. the captcha ads.. I dont mind them so much either, the normal captcha is sometime ridiculous when they use gibberish and its 20 charachters long all wavy and shadowed so its hard to see. atleast the ad ones you can hit play when you start the reply and when you are done you just type the quote that uses real words and is clearly written. but then they could save on captcha by only using it if you are sub 50 posts.

I was gifted the pubclub stuff but I'm perfectly fine with ads on the Escapist. I'm just sorry that the advertisers are not exactly quick to pay the Escapist the money they deserve.

Well unless comunists conquered us we live in a world where things cost just like te artists and journalists working at escapists. So it's either Ads or subscription, and since in the same boat as escapist are other sites I follow I would prefer ads.

But seriously... I stand by it, Advertising is a horrible thing and absolutely insufficient to make a business model around.
You know that the only reason television works is because of advertisements right? I mean, if it weren't for them, then there would be no T.V. (well, the tech would exist, but it wouldn't be used for entertainment)

Either way, doesn't the system already run with ads for us non-pubclub members?

I'd join the Publisher's Club to turn them off.

Maybe ads would unfuck Escapist's financial situation and we wouldn't have this big mess with contributors like Extra Credits not getting paid.

...What? Are you sure you're looking at the right site? There are already plenty of ads, and not having to see them is already a Pub Club benefit. Why are you asking us if we'd be okay if things were exactly the way they are right now?

Agreed, especially since so many people on this forum seem to fuck up their polls this way.

Yeah. Thank god they are gone, but now there is one that drops down sometimes that hovers just above the 'Forums" bar sometimes and blocks my ability to go to the main page. It only come once in a while, but it's not every time (thank god)

Ummm... isn't that exactly how it already is?

I'm fine with the ads though, so long as they aren't overly intrusive. The ads the Escapist has right now are fine. They're out of the way and I generally don't notice them that much. Even the ads before videos are fine. If it means I have the wait about half a minute to watch a video so that the Escapist can give out stuff for free, I'm happy.
