Simple question, I'm just wondering if you would be more worried if a large enough (lets say 0.5%) amount of people had developed telekinetic abilities.

Counterpart of your telekinetic registration thread?

Anyway, that depends... would they be able to read thoughts? If so... yes, that would be scary.

Wives have that ability.

They can slap a husband and make them feel like a scolded child with 1 look and a mean thought.

Some kids have it too.

They can make you take out your wallet and hand over your money without realising you are doing it.

If I wasn't one, more than scare me, I'd be very wary of them. Because I know that the minute I'd get a power I'd abuse it as much as I could for my personal advantage and fun.

A person with a gun is pretty much just as dangerous to my person as someone with telekinetic powers would be.

So, no, the existence of telekinetic powers wouldn't particularly scare me, as I would trust that most people with the power would be able to control themselves, just as most people are able to control themselves if they have a gun.

Frankly I'd be more scared of telepathics. I think some very bizarre things I'd rather be kept secret, thank you very much.

You're thinking of a variant of telepathy. Telekinesis refers to the ability to remotely manipulate kinetic energy, usually in order to move objects around, and has nothing (at least by default) to do with mind reading.

OT: Most likely yes. Depending on the limitations of this ability, a few rogues could rip the world apart (perhaps literally)

Okay, that doesn't sound too bad, most people would probably act pretty reasonably with those powers. Scratch me up for a "no".

How strong are we talking? Like Looper strong, where most for most people the extent of their power is just lifting a coin? Or are talking pure "IMA CRUSH YOU ALL BY DROPPING THIS HOUSE ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!"

If it's the former, whatevs. But if it's the latter, hell yeah I would be worried/scared.

Unless I was one of them

I'm assuming that it's estimated to have high upper limits for the more powerful telekinetics, but that there is no exact figure on the limit.

So a variety then? Some strong, some weak? Most in-between?

It depends on what they can move.

Is telekinesis meant to be limitless, so you can move cars and stuff? If so then yes I would be scared, wouldn't fancy getting swiped off the road by some telekinetic prick who is late for work and needs to get by.

If they can only move small stuff like pens and TV remotes, then they can go right ahead.

so just the ability to move stuff around?

no, not unless they can throw cars, chunks of earth, or houses around.

Or throw me in the air.

The worst part about telekinesis is that you could assassinate people and be copletely untracable. All you have to do is pinch off one artery, or the heart, or the brain, or the windpipe, and someone would die of seemingly natural causes. You wouldn't even need to be very powerful with it, really.

Throwing cars is too showy, the real uses for that kind of power would be far more subtle.

Of course, on the other hand, it could also be used to greatly benefit mankind. Living spacecraft propulsion!

The only problem being that proportion of jerks who'll go ape-shit with their abilities until they've destroyed half a city before someone can kill them... :/

You wouldn't actually need to be 'powerful' per se to scare the living shit out of people. 'Controlled' is a better word. Question: how much energy is in a bullet when it leaves the muzzle? Quite a bit? Maybe... compared to how much is required to lift a car? Sweet fuck all. A telekine who knows what he/she is doing, walking around with a bag full of ball bearings, is scarier than a tooled up marine, and a hell of a lot scarier than some dipshit who likes chucking cars about.

Moreover, on the basis that telekinesis works both ways (i.e. energy can be transferred both from and to objects), telekines have themselves a pretty Inv Sv! -_-

So... yes... a very big yes.

Exactly... it's the shit you don't see that's worrying... worse than the examples you've given... using telekinesis to kill someone and it appearing to be, to all intents and purposes, a conventional hit.

Of course, on the other hand, it could also be used to greatly benefit mankind. Living spacecraft propulsion!
Eh... energy outlay and depending on how use of the ability affects the individual, that's a nice idea, but iffy... :/

That would depend on the scale of the abilities from individual to individual.

Someone who can make small to medium size objects fly across a room with just their minds? Potentially dangerous yes but not all that 'scary'.

Someone who can make two passenger jets collide, or make a skyscraper collapse in on itself with just their minds? A lot scarier than a guy with a gun in my opinion.

OP: I don't deny I'd be slightly apprehensive if I wasn't one of the people with telekinetic powers (If I was I'd be too busy being awesome to be apprehensive). However, I like to think I'd also maintain my ability to judge people based on what they choose to do with their power, rather than what they have the potential to do.

Would telekinesis be a part of being psychic?

Because that would be a great perk (for me)

Very worrying. Imagine what a bullied child with such powers would do to his tormenters or vice-versa. Further, unless you can hit them with a tranq before they see you; there's not much an adult can do to over power them (unless the adult is a TK himself).

Much scarier with a man with a gun in my opinion; a gun can be taken away, a gun can run out of ammunition, a gun requires aim, and guns tend to be loud and obvious. A TK can make someone trip down the stairs, make a car swerve, or cause a heart attack without anyone being the wiser. Hell, imagine what you could get away with even if you weren't a TK..."Gee officer, I don't know...I didn't have control of my body; must've been one of them telks made me kill her." It'd be impossible to prove.

Yeah...very worrying.
