Poll: Would you buy a console without ability to sell used games?

I honestly don't even see it happening, the courts have upheld time and again the right to sell (and transfer ownership of) physical property.

Which technically they would allow you to do, they would do it by having a code or something that you only get one of with each disk so you could sell your game, but it's useless with out the code that's already been used up. Or by having a unique signature to each disk that registers with the console as soon as you put the disk in. This is why they are talking about making the consoles so that they have to be connected to the internet all the time. horrendously evil but you better believe they can do it if they choose to.

I'd bloody well think twice about supporting a company that had that level of undisguised contempt for their customers.

I don't know I can totally sympathize with it in a way. it cost's them MILLIONS upon MILLIONS. If there was no used game trade game publishers and studios would make more money an be able to take more risk's, that's pretty much a certainty.

I buy all my games new. If this happened, for whatever reason.. I would become an all-out pirate. I would own all the offending company's consoles, and I would be active in uploading cracks & unlocked games on all the major torrent sites. If, if ever a thing like that went down, mind you, otherwise I don't condone such a thing.

Anyway I'm PC Master Race. I only care about consoles for glorious exclusives.. these days that typically means a Rockstar or Uncharted game or something, which is once every few years really..

This make's 0 sense you say you buy all your game's new an only play a few games on consoles so the affect on you would be minimal, yet you will turn to a way of doing thing's that could earn you a pretty hefty fine or even a small amount of prison time in some country's, for what reason?



My view on the overall topic is I probably will get a next gen console, if the new xbox has full backward compatibility that will play a big part on which console I go with, just so I can play the majority of my games without the console sounding like it's attempting to take off. I'd be disappointed if they got rid of used games, not for the sale of them as I rarely do that unless game is offering a ridiculous amount for a game I thought was mediocre at best (space marine they game me £35 trade value, I bought it for £30 on offer 3 weeks before!) as normally they offer like £6 an it's like, might as well keep it for a rainy day an I fancy playing it. But I do but a fair amount of used games, they stores guarantee they will work so what do you have to loose. Which would mean I would prob build my game's catalogue slowly but if there's backwards compatibility I've got a tonne to play anyway!

On the topic of "pc Master Race" I use my computer to it's full potential for work running engineering simulation software which make the processing power of most "high end" pc game's look like your playing minesweeper whilst having a word document open. That an chatting shit on here an facebook.... so really don't get this whole superiority complex, even if like in this topic its half hearted.

I can justify spending forty pound on the odd game or two that I know I'm going to play to death, but it's too high for the rest. Fifteen to twenty pounds would be the highest I'd pay for something I wasn't sure I'd enjoy.

Exactly. I picked up Gears of War 1 and 2 preowned a fair few years after release, played them, enjoyed them, and went on to preorder Gears 3 and buy the DLC. See how it works? Brand loyalty is built bit-by-bit, not by a blind leap into uncharted waters. This is what I keep saying: keep prices high and people won't be willing to try unproven IP. Some people might be happy for the next generation of gaming to consist of Halo 6, Modern Warfare 5 and Mario Party 27. To me, that sounds like one of the inner circles of hell.

I personally would simply because I don't sell my old games and I rarely ever buy pre-owned. And since consoles are throwing older games I might have missed in their online stores, I can always get them digitally. So for me, it wouldn't make much of a difference.

while i am not really looking at buying the next set of consoles (something that can change) a sure way to make sure i wont is to eliminate the ability for me to pick up a used game cheap to try out a developer/game series or sell other games i dont want

Eh...that's pretty much how steam works now. Except there I can't play my games if my cable company/connection decides to take a day off and not let me log in.

I picked the yes if games are cheaper option but those games would have to be a LOT cheaper.

I think their is a difference between having a system where resale is impossible due to the setup, and purposefully using such a setup (or modifying an existing content delivery system - i.e. hard copy disks) in order to render resale impossible.

I forgive steam for that problem, as one can still buy hard copy games (though the systems in place to prevent PC game resale along with their being no appreciable "trade in" services was one of many reasons why I switched to consoles). But a digital only next gen platform...not really cricket, and would probably be foolish from a business perspective

God no, if it does happen I'll either buy from a company that doesn't shit all over my consumer rights or stick to gaming on my laptop. The majority of my purchases are used because I can't afford buying them right at release nor can I particularly justify doing so.

The short version is no, but really it depends on what else there is to offer.

Would there be anything the console offers to offest this? Lowered prices might soften the blow but thinking that would happen is laughable. Incredibly good services, like PS+'s cloud saves except for free maybe.

Really though, if consoles start locking out used games, you might as well just switch to PC gaming completely, since still being able to sell your games (along with not requiring an constant internet connection for the most part) is one of the only advantages consoles still have over PC.

As someone who always buys games new (after price drops, usually), my answer is no. I do not appreciate the way companies are squeezing their legitimate customers dry because of piracy. I'm already annoyed with the current state of DLC and microtransactions. As much as I love my console, I play on the PC as well and don't mind using it exclusively.

I do rent and I also borrow/lend games with friends. I like to try games before buying them so I would be just as screwed; anti-used is also anti-rent/borrow.

With games released recently, I buy a new copy, but for old games I want to get such as Fallout, Assassin's Creed etc I can never find new copies and so I buy old. Most of my games I have are preowned. I make it up to the companies by buying their DLC and newer games from them.

As it currently stands though, I agree with the gamestop assessment, if the next gen consoles blocked/removed "used game play" there would not only be A) significant backlash to that company/console, but B) A Massive decrease in sales due to the lack of used games being able to be purchased, which (as I am sure we all know of/do ourselves) is where a good number of people get their games.

It could only be justified with lower game prices, but I'd much prefer if it stayed like it is. I haven't bought any used games, but I do borrow games to and from friends.

I was gonna vote PC Master Race... but I actually do tend to buy consoles each generation for some of the exclusives, if nothing else. So even though I probably do 99.9% of my gaming on PC, I still do have an X-Box 360 and a PS3 currently set up next to my TV.

So instead of voting for the PC Master Race, I opted to vote no. I wouldn't buy a console that blocked used games. Do CD players (are those still a thing?) prevent you from playing used CDs? Do DVD and Blu-Ray players prevent you from watching used movies? I can go read a used book at a library, go buy a used car, hell... I live in the 'States, so for a little while anyway, I can go out and buy a used firearm. So why the fuck do gamers have to put up with that sort of bullshit exclusively?

Oh, that's right. 'Cause the government still sees them as children's toys and lets publishers get away with shit that would be illegal for any other industry. Anyone who votes 'yes' in this poll is actively helping to completely destroy their own rights as consumers. Way to go.

Master Race checking in. Well, I've had consoles in the past, and I've never really traded in used games to any great extent. I've almost always bought new and kept ahold of everything I've bought. I don't think the lack of this option would put me off. OTOH, it'd be a dick move.

Completely agree. The only way that I would feel comfortable is if I was able to own the digital copy rather than "borrow" it. I wouldn't care too much about how much space it would take up, so long as the HDD could be swapped for a larger one. If I couldn't get more GBs, that would probably be my biggest concern.

I pretty much never sell my games and rarely buy used. The only used games I have purchased were to replace old ones that I had let a friend borrow and he sold them when he got rid of his system, and then a few at Christmas because GameStop was having a sale and my wife had a gift card. I would have no problem if the used game market disappeared. However I do take issue with the idea that I couldn't lend a game to a friend (obviously not the one who sold my games thought) or borrow one in return.
