Congratulations! You've managed to create an amazing video game. It's received critical success, a fan base of millions of players, and won a couple awards here and there. Your original ideas have improved the gaming industry for the better.

But the people want more. Even though your plot was resolved by the end of the game, and maybe even a few crucial characters had been killed off, the fans demand a sequel.

Would you give it to them?

Of course, you have to take in the risks. Your sequel might be a total failure- a complete remake of the original, with a few new levels and a poor continuation of the story. Or it could be just what the doctor ordered.

I'd make a sequel, in a sense. I'd put in a completely different story, with a few recurring characters. I'd keep the core gameplay mechanics the same, but add in some new features. Sort of like Golden Sun and Golden Sun 2.

If it ended completely self contained with no need for any continuation then no I wouldn't. If I could make more and turn it into a planned trilogy.

Going from the digaea series they completely knock off all the characters and go from a new story line but they do bring back the old characters at the end

If it makes a lot of money, who could say no. It sucks when sequels ruin a perfectly good game, but it sucks more to be poor.

If I had it originally planned as a trilogy or 2 parter, yes. If not, no, however, I'm sure the publisher would regardless.

depends. like what sms said if their was no planned sequel then no. Like some games that get sequels dont need them. ie tales of Symphonia.

definitely change the main character. the closest i would get to the original cast is having a side character as a side character. altho continuations work in some cases, but like fable 2 was a good story without ruining the original. maybe have the same villain if he didnt die in the first one. or was too powerful to die.

I really hate the needless milking analogy, I prefer the choosing to continue to mine in a diamond mine.

depends how much money we're talking.

in the way that if i didn't get enough to retire last time round i'm going again

but if i did then id just create a new game
entirely new game.
based in the same universe

that'll do the trick

only if the story could be followed. one of my favorite films is Bolt and one of my friends also likes the film. he wants there to be a sequel but i don't as i don't feel they could do anything more with the story. he then comes up with an idea of how they could, the son of Bolt which was a pathetic. they do not need a sequel and i hope they don't make one. sequels should only be made if the story allows it.

I'd acually make the game generaly the same. What I mean is I would make a sequel that starts excacly the same as the original, but this time make some key event happen/not happen and build a new stroy off of it. I think that would acually be a agreat Idea, aslong as all the levels except maybe a few are completely different.

It would depend on what kind of game I made. If it was an MMO, then I'd just release expansion packs/DLC for it.

But if we're talking a standard console game with a story that's completely resolved in the end, I'm not sure. From a business standpoint, if it sold a lot, I'd be stupid not to make a sequel or another game that takes place in that universe. But then there's that pesky issue of fans complaining about it not being good as the original, and fans can be pretty bitchy about this type of thing. I'd definitely add some new mechanics to the game while still keeping true to the original gameplay elements, ala No More Heroes 2, because I'd definitely get yelled at if I kept it the same.

If the story allows for it and I have new ideas to keep the gameplay fresh, then yes.

If these two points are not met(and by that I mean both of them) then no. Even if I have new gameplay ideas, but no story I still wouldn't expand upon a previous game, I would develop a new IP.
