In a word, no. Not unless I planned it to be a series to begin with. To me when I create something, the sanctity of that creation is more important then the money.
Aaah! I was waiting for an answer like that! I totally agree. I hate it when someone creates a terrific, original product, and then become money-grabbers after achieving that success. They often lose their original vision and creativity, and the game often stinks (though it might be a bit better in terms of graphics and gameplay.) I'd move on and make something insanely different, knowing that my publisher would probably trust me on that.
That is just naive on both parts, at the end of the day it is a business and in order to stay in that business, you must go where the money is and that is exactly what the publishers would make you do.

As for the sanctity of your creation, that would be little comfort to you when you have no job and no money.

I wouldn't make a sequel based soely on the success of the previous game. However, if there were still some elements of the story that I wanted to expand on, or a new but connecting story all together, I might be enticed to make one.

Unfortunately, some game developers don't quite get this.

The money is enticing, but if I'm confident I can't make another golden game I'll leave it as a shining game. A sequel can be all it takes to mud the greatness of a game.

Yes. Keep gameplay with the same feel (which I think is important for a kind of 'branding', so to speak) but make story elements and the like completely different and unrelated (see the 3D Mario games. It could've been anyone else, I'd like the games the same).

If the story has room for another great story, then yes. If not then I would go on and create something else.

i would probably take the structure that the seccess had and make a new game out of it, new setting, characters, story, universe, all that good stuff. maybe throw some tidbits from the success in there like mention characters, find some of their equipment for use as a legendary weapon or something, maybe even have one of the characters memorialize in the next game. who knows right?
