Fun moral dilemma:

You and a sapient (or sentient, whichever term suits you) alien are marooned in a harsh environment with no food available. You can make it out but you need food. The thought of eating you repulses your extra-terrestrial buddy, but you are both safe for the other to eat.

Would you eat him?

Would my body even be able to digest his flesh? I mean he/she/it IS an alien, he/she/it does not have to play by our earth rules.

Nah I couldn't eat my buddy regardless of species, now if it was stranded on an alien planet with plenty of non-sapient critters I could hunt I'd eat them if they were safe.

Like it was the tastiest lump of steak i'd ever eaten.

I mean christ, if I was stranded and hungry enough i'd be coating you buggers in chilli sauce and stoking up a fire....

I'll pass on that considering I'm a vegetarian. I'd rather just be starving hungry or eat grass to survive.

I would say no, as having the alien to help me out would be beneficial, but if the food situation got dire enough, I might resort to eating them.

Oh, he's sentient and my buddy? No way, then.
If he were the equivelent of a space cow though, I'd cut him up and eat him faster than you could say "Alien Barbeque."

I already have some immigrants in my basement

I wouldn't. Even if I was stranded with my dog on an island. I'd sooner die than eat him. I'll lose my life before losing my humanity.

Well, yeah but, how is it safe for him if I eat him? Wouldn't that kill him, or is this some weird alien that grows back it's limbs...

I wouldn't eat him because he is my buddy. Might ask for a tentacle or something but nothing major.

So we can both die or one of us can die and the other can live? That does not seem like a hard choice.

If he makes the first move to betray me then he is done for.

I'd eat him regardless of survivalist circumstances.

Interstellar food chain MEET HUMANITY! Omnomnom...
Seriously you have to establish that shit right off the bat. One of the few things I don't like about a lot of sci-fi is that humans aren't the vicious and conquest oriented species that I know and love.

Star Trek is the worst offender that I know of.

Why is eating a sentient alien any different from anyone else?

I'd eat him only after his tragic accident while foraging for fruits and nuts. He was an organ donor after all, and he wouldn't want me to starve if there was a meat source around.

What makes you think the alien would be classified as an animal? Hell, using human conception at all to describe it is probably a bad idea.

I wouldn't do it if we were pals. I mean, I couldn't imagine looking mournfully into its...whatever...and then eating it.
