While I do like the idea of banned people staying banned, I like the anonymity that is provided even more.
Besides, I kinda like when the geeks who use the internet for bad things are caught by the even bigger geeks on the side of what is right.
...if that makes sense.
I'm assuming you mean the way 'it takes a geek to catch a geek' seems to 'fit', so to speak? Because if that is what you mean then I agree with you.

Hell, even close friends don't know my real surname. There are only about 5 people outside of my immediate family who do.
If I had to legally post my real name, I would quit everything.

No dice. Why should I give up my privacy because some troll with a DSL connection decided to keep coming back to the forums that banned him?

Under certain circumstances, such as if a convicted online sexual predator is signing up to a chat room where there is a possibility of bumping into kids, they should be legally required to state that they were convicted as a sex offender.

Sure.

I have nothing to hide and, honestly, the Internet would be a better place for it. Not so much for security, but people would be less... mean? I don't care if you suddenly feel violated because you can't call someone a fag or whore because, gasp, someone you know might read it and see who you really are.

Those of you who are like 'NONONO! MAH PRIVACHEH' aren't really that hip with e-detectives, are you? Give a person enough time and they'll be able to find out your real name. Hell, probably more than that. This 'privacy on the Internet' thing really is an illusion. The information is right there for whoever really wants it.

I do think that it would be a change to have the barrier of anonymity broken down, but if it were to happen, people would get used to it.

However, I must ask:How would whoever is in charge of this verify names provided to the site?

Last I checked, you don't need, legally, to go through any official process to change your name until you get into governmental issues (at least in the US).

Hm...give out my name and address just so a random jackass can never say "first" or "GTFO fag" to me over the internet ever again, decisions, decisions...

There are an awful lot of people in the world who have the exact same names. Why not go a step further & force them to use their social security numbers? >:D

You are just a number, citizen, & Big Brother is watching you.

no!
why? because we all troll from time to time, and also i think inevitably it would result in abuse of power and criminals hacking the system and then stopping it from seeing them anyway
