So, my fellow escapist I was recently put into a bad situation where i was coming home and I had a dog in the road. I stopped and tried shooing and honking, this dog kept circling my car and I waited a solid 5 mins before realizing that once the dog goes behind my car I must go. When I got home my dad told me I was legally required to kill the dog because I would of been at fault if I got rear-ended. My question is would you of followed the law and killed the dog or would you be willing to risk getting rear-ended?

You're not legally required to kill the dog. That's fucking demented. And you'd be at fault if the dog was crushed beneath your tires.

So yeah, I'd rather pay than kill a dog.

the legal system can burn in hell then, legally required to kill a dog, i can't believe that's true i really can't, you should check your sources! any life, even that of a dog, if a million, squillion times more important than some bumpers getting dented

I'd just go quite slowly for a while, and if the dog doesn't get out the way, it deserves to die.

Wahahahaaat? Is your dad as absolutely bonkers as he sounds? From what I remember the person being rear-ended is the one at fault and also what kind of insane legal system would ever REQUIRE you to kill something?

P.S. A country of origin would be nice, I'm basing this off living in Stupidville Ohio USA.

EDIT: To clarify, no. I'm a pretty steadfast pacifist, and I generally only violate that for things that I regularly eat.

Just go at a moderate speed and the dog will move out of the way.

Shesh, the easiest problems to solve...

I would never kill a dog, unless it was a labradoddle. If it was my dog I would run over myself before I would kill him.

No... it does not matter, theres no such legal reaQuirement in the US. Even from an insurance liability standpoint your not at fault if you get rear ended because invariably if someone rear ends you , especially from a stopped position, its their fault for failure to retain control of the vehicle.

No, logic might dictate that if your going 65 mph and encounter the dog, you might be "required" to hit the dog, as opposed to hitting someone in oncoming traffic, as the human life outweighs animal life, but... theres no such legal requirements in the US, Though i know theres some kooky individual laws on city/county books that well, no one can fully account for.

not sure how it works everywhere else but i'm fairly sure that in Australia if someone runs into the back of your car its always their fault.

Except insects. Their lives are worth squat. They even know it themselves, drones for bees and ants, cannibalistic sex for spiders, flying into fly zappers etc.

If the dog doesn't get out of the way of an object ten times its own size? Natural selection. too stupid to live (assuming it's not a puppy). You are not obliged to kill it by any means, however. Humans get in the way of natural selection all the time, just look at the panda.

You Dad is wrong. At least in my country. In Australia you are alowed to break to avoid hitting animals. You are not allowed to swerve or do anything else really. As far as it being your fault if you are rear ended. That is completely wrong. It is the person that hits you from behind that is at fault, always. And for good reason. If somebody hits you from behind then it is the direct cause of their driving ie. following too close, speeding, not paying attention.

Look up the legislation in your country, I think you will find that it is simular to ours here in this case.

I HATE that law. When we were taking driver's ed class the teacher told us that if an animal runs out in front of you just keep going. The only exception, she said, is if it's a large animal that would damage your car. And I was like "No consideration for the damage to the LIVING THING?!" Then we were out on the actually driving part and I slammed on the brakes when a chipmunk ran out and she TOOK POINTS OFF for that. It's barbaric and evil and a blight to the world.

Id kill it personally. Animals are animals regardless of how cute they are. If it was out in the middle of the road like that then it's either a stray or the owner isn't responsible enough to take care of it.

Actually, you're very much not supposed to run over pets. Your question is invalid.
