I'm serious. He made the choice to benefit by taking from others, so I in turn will take from him his life.
All actions have consequences.
Yeah, but there's such a thing as commensurability.
Breaking and entering plus theft does not warrant murder.

I'd go for a knife disarm in that situation. Dude's not gonna aim that thing too well once he loses a few fingers.

But yeah, I'd kill him if I really had to. If somebody's got to die either way, it's not going to be me.

edit: also, just realized how crazy it would be to try a knife disarm on a guy with a gun. Maybe if I snuck up behind him...

Someone breaks into my home, where I live and steals the things I work my ass off for, and you expect me to...
What?
Call the police?
Those incompetent fucks couldn't catch a serial killer if he just slaughtered a bus load of children right in front of them.

Quietly accept it?
The hell with that. That is unacceptable.
Killing them would be a good deed anyway.
If someone has to resort to stealing from me, they are clearly not doing society any good.
Woah, I seem to have struck a nerve.

Calling the police is an option, yeah. And then telling the insurance company so you get your money back.

Nobody would want you to just accept it.
But even if you were to interfere with him, there are options inbetween doing nothing and outright trying to murder him. You know, knock him out, detain him until the police arrive, tackle him so he loses his swag...
Whatever.
Plenty of options.

It's weird how you seem to think in total absolutes with no possible middleground whatsoever.

No. I'm as bad as he is if I kill him. The moral high ground doesn't keep you alive, but it does keep you satisfied.
Ahem...how, exactly, does it keep you satisfied if you're dead?
My thetan level is over 9000, trust me, it keeps you satisfied.
Actually, that's quite wrong. You're supposed to get "clear" of thetans to be truly satisfied and that's the whole point with... ...oh, I see what you did there...

Hail Xenu anyway, no matter what Tom says. I'm not being "glib."
Yeah, ye see, I was trying to be...tryin to...oh dear...
Chill, I don't really believe the universe is over a trillion years or that there are spaceships that look exactly like actual planes.

I've actually had something similar happen and can give an honest answer. I woke early one morning to the sounds of shattering glass. Instinct took over from here, as my heart started pounding and I fumbled for my dresser for the handgun I keep there. I opened my door and stuck my head out to look, and that's when I had the luckiest moment in my life. A bullet lodges in the doorframe a couple inches from my head. I aimed and quickly put two rounds into the intruder's chest. There was no thinking, no real "I'm gonna die I'd better shoot" or anything like that, just pure instinct and fear.

I called 911, and by the time the paramedics arrived, the man was gone. There's no duty to retreat clause here in NC, so I only had to answer some questions from the police before I was free to go. Still haunted by that night sometimes. I'd advise to retreat or disarm the person if possible, because once you take someone's life, it stays with you forever. Even if it was the "right" thing to do.
That's quite intense, right there. My dad once told me my granddad was this close to shooting a guy in the chest with a revolver because he wouldn't back away(long, weird story), and he never forgot about it(hence why I know about this, in retrospect).

So, yeah, shooting someone ain't no cakewalk however one slices it. Hope you're doing fine.

I'd defend myself if I had to, but a bullet in someone's chest doesn't just drop them like in the movies. If I just shot the guy, there's no guaranteeing I'd live. But that's not what the questions about.

If you die, you no longer exist and can't do anything. Rule number one is make sure you don't get killed, because otherwise your capable of no further virtue.

Not sure. Practically, I would, but there's never a "kill or be killed" lockdown option, there's always alternatives. If I had to choose out of the poll above, however, 'Not Sure' will do. I've no idea if I could kill a man, I'd probably do it once survival-instinct set in, or by accident when panicking and trying to make him stop, but not sure I could pick up a random household object and hit someone with intent to kill.

I agree with the "Not on purpose, but if it happens, it happens and I'll make peace with it" statements. I would never intentionally take a man's life, but if during the process of disarming and / or debilitating them I accidentally did, then yes, it happens. I would feel less guilty if it was to protect my family as well. But I would take no pleasure in it.

This thread just brought to mind a quote from Serenity ala Jayne: "I'll kill a man in a fair fight, or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight, or if there's a woman involved, or if I'm gettin paid. Mostly only when I'm gettin paid" I know thats not really helpfull but hey. Anyways, I'd like to believe I'd defend myself but as its been said already you never really know till you are in that situation and I'd rather just not experience it.

While I voted yes (I've been so pissed before I nearly killed one of my mates, it would only take someone to really piss me off for me to kill them) I found an interesting statistic once, although I'm not actually sure one the credibility of it.
It stated this: only about 1% of civilians are prepared to kill, and only about 25% of rookie soldiers as well.
People may say that they are prepared to kill, and I don't doubt that some of them would, but you can't know unless you've been there.

I'd shoot a man in Reno, just to watch him die [/failed meme]

Ummmm....if all else failed, yes, but I'd deeply hate myself for it.
