After replaying through symphony of the night again, I would love a new 2d Castlevania. The games are lots of fun

I recently bought Harmony of Despair and all of its content, and I am quite pleased with it, especially the full-level remake of the original 8-bit game.

Gimme more, please!

I'd love for them to make a more classic 2D Castlevania game, instead of the 'Metroidvania' games they've been making since SOTN. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying anything bad about those games, but it'd be cool to have something like Super Castlevania IV in HD.

Yep, same here. I'm honeastly kind of sick of the Metroidvania style and would love to see the series return to it's roots. Either that, or go all the way and give us a totally huge Metroidvania/RPG style entry that has numerous interior locations and a giant overworld like area.

lawl. 100% yes!

I'd love a new 2D castlevania. All the best Castlevania games are 2D. I loved the first three Castlevania games. Lord of Shadows however, was like God of War, which I thought was a lazy game to begin with...

Castlevania needs to return to it's roots...

More Metroidvania, please!

Now that Nintendo's handed Metroid back to "Walk in a Straight Line for two hours" Sakamoto, and Castlevania's been "re-imagined" as "Gothic God Of War" I don't think we've had a passable Metroidvania since Portrait of Ruin. That one wasn't that great, AND it was 5 years ago!

This cannot stand!

Absolutely. All three of the DS ones were outstanding, same for the GBA ones. Following the 'pattern' they should make 3 more on the 3DS, and the first one will be a direct story sequel to Order of Ecclesia.

Dunno about the calls for an end to the Metroidvania formula. Some of them have had the problem of having too much open space without any enemies and/or becoming too easy due to the abundance of powerups/grinding potential. Order of Ecclesia is pretty similar to what StriderShinryu suggests, and it shared the brutal difficulty of its distant ancestors- so much so that it was a turn-off for me after a while. Still a good game, just frustrating as hell sometimes.

Any of these are better than Lords of Shadow.

I would kill for one, and the funny thing is publishers can't see that would sell like hotcakes on any platform.
Wake the fuck up you accounting bastards and smell the coffee, don't just tack the name on a random game(Lords of Shadow) to get a few extra bucks, finance a proper development and people will love it.

I'm with the 'More Metroidvania' crowd, they're just so damned good. Castlevania along with Advance Wars easy became my favourite handheld series and even now I replay them all fairly often. Just kept getting better too, Dawn of Sorrow was good, Portrait of Ruin was better, and Order of Ecclesia was the most brilliant yet. Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow were also fantastic experience, hell, there's not a handheld one I've played what wasn't fantastic.

More please!

I would like a new Castlevania that's in 2D but wasn't like Symphony Of The Night, make one that is like Castlevania 1,3, and 4.

Yes.
I also just want Kojima to keep his grubby hands away from the series.

Honestly, I'd rather not. Unless it was about the war in 1999, in which case I'd give my kidney to get that game made.

For a while now, I've been more interested in seeing a sequel to Lords of Shadow, as I rather liked the game itself and felt that its ending held quite a lot of promise.

I registered at this site just now, ONLY to answer this poll. I feel so strongly about this. Castlevania is one of my favorite game series of all time. Here is what I feel about this:

They need to return to the Western-feeling "barbaric" Simon Belmont theme.

Think along these lines: Castlevania 1, 2 Simon's Quest, and Super Castlevania 4.

YES: Simon Belmont with more of a manly barbaric "Conan" look. The world needs to be NOT colorful, but drab, blue and green, sad, and terrible. What a horrible night to have a curse.

YES: Bring back the original feel of the game, the subtleties that made
Castlevania distinct. The jump. The walk. The whip, and the holy water. Bring this spirit back. Don't over-feminize it. Don't over-soften it. Don't apologize for it.

NO: Anime/Emo/Eyeshadow theme. Please give this a rest for just one game. Please. We can play Barbies later.

NO: Over-stylized artwork that screams "every other game". I don't know what it is about overly wide shoulders, overly large hands, overly straight hair, overly blue eyes, etc. Why does game artwork always look half anime/half runway model? When did this start, and when will it stop?

NO: Metroidvania. Why? So your devs will focus on the feel, mood, and presentation and not so much on all the complications inherent in those more complex type games. These take too long and they end up being too mediocre. Make a straight 2d game with traditional stages so you can keep your focus. For example, in the Wii game "Adventure Rebirth", they lost focus. They didn't include "Battle of the Holy" in the game. That's what happens when you lose focus. Also, Christopher Belmont had this sorta weenie walk to him, and the game had an overall cartoon feel. Again...

NO: Hand held. Let's go for the big screen. You don't watch Star Wars on an iphone you watch it on a projector... well, maybe you do watch it on an iphone. NM.

YES: Nostalgic music that FEELS like it used to, not "heavy metaled" to death.

YES: This game started out with a haunted house HORROR feel. Lets go back to that horror. Let's get away from the cartoon, and go back to the graveyard.

Thanks.

I'd like a new 2D Castlevania game with Sprites (no polygons, no 2.5D), gameplay, controls, and progression like Super Castlevania 4.

There's no excuse for not being able to whip in eight directions!

I think a classic 2D style Castlevania would be cool. I don't need to have all the originals re-released, but I think a $5 old school style Castlevania game on XBLA/PSN would be cool, assuming Konami doesn't fuck it up like they have been with many of their beloved properties as of late..

I recently played through Bloodrayne Betrayal and Order of Ecclessia and after dipping countless hours into BlazBlue...
I think you know where I'm going with this, much like the last Contra (Hard Corps, PSN/XBLA) the next Castlevania game needs to be done by ArcSystems using their amazing 2D graphics, with difficulty, exploration, and a female protagonist like Order of Ecclessia, AND a fighting engine similar to Bloodrayne :D

so is this the next kickstarter?

I don't want a $5 game. I want a $55 game!! I don't want them just 'pooping' out a 'cutesy little 2d' game with no expectation of success. I want them to put REAL EFFORT into a 2d Castlevania, and take it seriously. I would EASILY pay $55 for a new Castlevania 2d! I would pay $65 for a new Castlevania 2d!! In fact, I don't know what I would pay! $70? I don't care!

Here's my problem with "Adventure Rebirth":

Who was it for? Fans of the original? New players? I couldn't tell!

Didn't seem to be for new players because they gave the controls that "old school" stiff feeling that the older Castlevanias had. If they're trying to bring in new players, THAT is now how you do it. "Yes, we'll get them with RESTRICTED CONTROLS! That'll bring 'em in!" I don't think so.

They weren't trying to appeal to original fans either. Why? Think about it. Why did they give the game a cartoony appearance and sound? The originals weren't like that. Where was the DEFINING theme song, "Battle of the Holy?" Nowhere. Where was the STRUT? They probably don't even know what that is. Where was the "jump?" You know, that jump where the character looks like he weighs so much that gravity smashes him to the ground when he jumps? Where were the ropes? Adventure rebirth had a ton of rope climbing.

This game wasn't for new fans (too restricted controls), and it wasn't for old fans (omission of OBVIOUS game elements).

So, who was it for?

I don't mean to be insulting with this post, I mean to light a fire under their tail! Please read this, and know you still have fans that will buy 2d Castlevania as long as they can still see, breathe, and twitch their thumbs!!

Do this: Go into deep meditation. Dream of Simon Belmont strutting through the woods, laboriously carrying his gear, determined, while Bloody Tears tells of this struggle. Paint a single red dot beneath your eye, look at yourself in the mirror, and begin.

:) DO IT NOW!! GET TO THE CHOPPA!!!!

I liked the Metroidvania post-SOTN games, especially the DS ones, better than SOTN, myself.

But Castlevania HD was quite a nice surprise, even if it lacked any narrative what-so-ever. I just loved playing as everyone in one game. I must have 50+ hours in that thing.
