I registered at this site just now, ONLY to answer this poll. I feel so strongly about this. Castlevania is one of my favorite game series of all time. Here is what I feel about this:
They need to return to the Western-feeling "barbaric" Simon Belmont theme.
Think along these lines: Castlevania 1, 2 Simon's Quest, and Super Castlevania 4.
YES: Simon Belmont with more of a manly barbaric "Conan" look. The world needs to be NOT colorful, but drab, blue and green, sad, and terrible. What a horrible night to have a curse.
YES: Bring back the original feel of the game, the subtleties that made
Castlevania distinct. The jump. The walk. The whip, and the holy water. Bring this spirit back. Don't over-feminize it. Don't over-soften it. Don't apologize for it.
NO: Anime/Emo/Eyeshadow theme. Please give this a rest for just one game. Please. We can play Barbies later.
NO: Over-stylized artwork that screams "every other game". I don't know what it is about overly wide shoulders, overly large hands, overly straight hair, overly blue eyes, etc. Why does game artwork always look half anime/half runway model? When did this start, and when will it stop?
NO: Metroidvania. Why? So your devs will focus on the feel, mood, and presentation and not so much on all the complications inherent in those more complex type games. These take too long and they end up being too mediocre. Make a straight 2d game with traditional stages so you can keep your focus. For example, in the Wii game "Adventure Rebirth", they lost focus. They didn't include "Battle of the Holy" in the game. That's what happens when you lose focus. Also, Christopher Belmont had this sorta weenie walk to him, and the game had an overall cartoon feel. Again...
NO: Hand held. Let's go for the big screen. You don't watch Star Wars on an iphone you watch it on a projector... well, maybe you do watch it on an iphone. NM.
YES: Nostalgic music that FEELS like it used to, not "heavy metaled" to death.
YES: This game started out with a haunted house HORROR feel. Lets go back to that horror. Let's get away from the cartoon, and go back to the graveyard.
Thanks.
