Nah, I fucking hate cinemas. Being surrounded by people in a large space.. not for me thanks. I enjoy the comfort of being in my own home on a nice sized TV.

I suspect the cinema I tend to go to is a somewhat different affair than normal. It's an 8o-ish year old family-run cinema. Tickets are a bit cheaper than normal, and snacks are actually cheaper than they are anywhere else in town. So yes, I would miss it.

Watching a movie at the cinema is just different enough to make me miss the cinema if they were gone. Yes, it's become pretty expensive and yes, most of the people there are unbelievable jackasses, but big screen, bucket of popcorn, some movies just go better with that. Also, 3D makes bad movies bearable if it looks nice.

And sometimes I enjoy people making an ass of themselves, too.

I like cinemas these days for the whole 3d experience.

There is no way Im getting a 3d tv at home since watching them for too long gives headaches and you have to keep track of those silly glasses. Plus the price...

But for a one off two hour spectacle I quite like the 3d thing. Just not all the time thanks.

I've got an HD projector and surround sound system hooked up to a Blu ray player, so the 'magic' of cinemas is literally just downstairs. If all movies were 'straight to Blu' then I wouldn't be loosing much.

Sure for some movies it's fun, but most of the time there are the obnoxious loud people with their phones and the people who use the movies as a 2 hour daycare centre... Not missing it.

That said, I'll be seeing at least The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit and Brave at the cinema this year.

This is interesting, a lot of you seem to keep bringing up the value of a 'shared experience' with friends or boy/girlfriends whatever, I'm starting to wonder if it's an American thing or if it's just me.

Personally, I hate going to the cinema with other people, especially on dates. I went to see the Dark Knight for the second time on a date and she wouldn't stop talking, she laughed out loud when Harvey Dent got burned, she kept trying to pull me (first world problems, eh?)

When I go to see a movie, I go to do that and nothing else. I don't want people talking to me or shouting 'you go girl' or nudging me to make sure I saw what just happened. As I say, maybe it's just me.

Yeah, I'd miss cinemas... but the thing is, they aren't dying. I don't look well upon piracy of new films, though it's an overstatement that it's killing cinema. If anything were to kill cinema, it would be the grossly inflated prices of cinema food. £4 for a small popcorn... outrageous. When they insist that people buy their massively overpriced food and stop people from bringing in their own, people are just going to see cinemas as too expensive and unwelcoming. I don't buy the argument that cinemas have to charge high markups on food to make up for the cost of films. A little overpriced is okay, if it's quality... but the prices most cinemas are asking really take the piss.

Yes I would greatly, before you asked, my cinema experiences had been pleasant 99% of the time so I am fortunate to watch a film without any annoying problems.
As those advertise do say, I do go there for the experience since I don't exactly got surround sound speakers and big flat screen tv and the likes in my room. The best experience is watching it with my mate at my side and it's always great to talk about it once we left the screens.
Ok sure going to the cinema has always been the main reasons for me to meet up with my mate but we can still meet up without the need to go to the cinema but we both like watching comicbook superheroes movies.

I like the movies, it's nice going out to see a film on a big screen. The atmosphere, the smell of the cinema (popcorny etc), it's all nice.

Not really, any film I want to see I find online, with a few exceptions.
I saw The Avengers last Saturday at the cinema in 3-D (incidentally the first film I've ever seen in 3-D, couldn't focus during the more intense scenes), but it was more of an impulse thing.

I don't think I would. With the weird way my university is, by the time I manage to get a free day when all my friends do the movie I wanted to watch is no longer showing. (Scott Pilgrim! D: ) Even during the times I can, with the high prices and the fact I don't like having to deal with crowds of annoying strangers (Doesn't always happen, but it's really annoying when it does) I'm usually happier to spend the day roaming the city and then just watching a DVD with my friends and partner at home.

I wouldn't actively push to have them gone, but I can't say they feel worthwhile to me.

Having lived in a town for the last 2 years with no cinema, yes I miss the cinema. I don't even remember the last time I went to the cinema. So many times I've wanted to but never had the time as it would involve heading into the city.

I was trying to think the other day what the last film I saw in the cinema was. Last one I can think of Predators. But there may have been more recent but not much more recent.

EDIT: Could have been Tron either... that was more recently I think

You have a partner? Blast! I'm thwarted.

OT: DVDs! They will go shortly after the cinemas. In fifty years time we will look back on this generation and remember when the machines begun to enact their ingenious plot to offer us so much crap at the touch of a button, we never leave our home and so become fat, slow and stupid. Then... well, then the digital distributes take over the world.

xD!

Unless you're Australian. By that point we should finally have access to ADSL2.

I'm Australian and I could of had ADSL2+! But turns out my neighbors have it and we share a cable, meaning only one house per two can have ADSL2+.

Australia, I love you, but hot damn, gurl! Get your shit together.

I'd miss the popcorn, but that's about it. Everything else they do can be found elsewhere, especially the movies.

I think the last time I personally paid to get into a cinema was a couple of years ago. It's too expensive & a superior experience can be had at home.

Also, of all the anti-piracy ads, this one is probably my favourite.

Should try and sue them for false advertising. The only people making money off piracy are the ones selling them at the swap meet, and that's only really funding themselves.

Pirates are out to get you, funding crime/terrorism other bullshit, I'd love to hear how they try to prove those claims.

I wouldn't wish them to go away, but I wouldn't miss them either. It's been about a year and a half since I went to a theater (True Grit was the last movie I saw in theaters). Between overpriced tickets, annoying audiences, and the overall poor quality of movies these days, theaters are pretty much dead to me anyway.

I did have ADSL2 but then we moved down the road. We are now out of range for ADSL2. We are now paying more than we used to for ADSL1 and an internet connection that rapidly switches itself on and off for random periods of time.

I refuse to acknowledge Australia has access to it until it stops being such a rarity!
