That sounds like one of those games where the Hero is controlled by an AI and you pretty much have to spend all your time babysitting them to make sure they have all the right buffs and don't die. If the Hero AI is programmed excessively well, then that could be a good game. Put some witty dialogue between your sidekick character and the hero and that could be a great game.

Yes. There's a reason it's not usually done, since it lacks player empowerment, but I find it a nice break from the cliche.

Incidently, Recettear is like that, and I found it charming. You basically play an item shop owner in an RPG-functioning world.

You already do something similar in Oblivion. Sure, you're the Hero of Kvatch, but while the real hero of the story is you, you get nothing at the end but a
shitty suit of armour,
while Martin gets all the credit.

It seems to me that no matter what game you are playing the player character is the most important character in the story (for obvious reasons).

So my question is: if there was a game where you played the role of a support character instead of the hero destined to save the land would you play it?

Somethings for this game to work: the "Hero" takes you everywhere, NPCs talk to the Hero not you but you get to be the a snarky sidekick if you want, and you can choose specializations etc,

personally I think it'd be great to see the standard RPG story fair from a different point of view. What else would be required for this game to work?
Disgaea 3 is a tactics RPG game for the PS3 that lets you play as the support characters if you wish. You can make a team of characters that don't have anything to do with the story if you want. The game lets you customize more than any other game I've played too.

So to answer your question, yes I would, since I already do!

I like stealth and sniping, so I'd love an FPS or cover-based shooter (genres I usually don't care for) if I got to play the sniper who covered the standard FPS ground-pounders as they stormed the enemy lines.

I've already played a game like that, as mentioned in this thread, the game you mention is FFXII. Vaan is the player character, but he is literally just along for the ride. The story is all about Ashe, and the short bits where you don't have Ashe are either A) The start of the game showing how Vaan bumbled his way into things, or B) Vaan is being the sidekick of Balthier/Vossler to go save Ashe for a short bit. Barring these two events, Ashe is the start of the show front and center. And when she's not the star of the show, Balthier is. (Rightfully so, my GOD I love Balthier)

And everything aside, I adore FFXII for this fact, not to mention all the other reasons I have to like it, like a spiffy combat system and interesting politics based story instead of what became the standard for JRPGs outside SMT releases.

I'd give it a try, bonus points if you add an option for me to tell the hero to get over him/herself during the obligitory brooding phase.

I think I'd like a game with this premise simply because it wouldn't be ridiculously overindulgent like so many other games.

But then you aren't playing a game you're just watching a movie, and actually ME2 and DA2 aren't that far from that.

I guess it would make a great casual game tho, loads of money and all that...

In Oblivion the actual man who beats the crap out of the demon is Martin, and everyone hails him as a king and hero.
You actually end up doing errands for Martin, like getting in a dungeon and fight all evil things, just to get him his armor.

I got ninja'd already. But yes, Oblivion.

'Stay back, Captain NPC has it' then I just stared at what happened next, closed the game and was off to play Planescape.

In theory, it sounds cool. But we actually do like playing the heroes and doing everything. It might end up a cool short game but as a long, epic one, it would be boring. You'd still control the battles, you'd do everything, you just wouldn't get any credit. It would be annoying after a time.

We are always the heroes of a game because we actively participate and influence it. Make an NPC do that and ...well...it's like being on rail road tracks, watching the scenery.

To be honest....I'm not entirely sure whether this would deviate much from your average RPG. As much as you are the 'support' character as you say, each individual character has their own sotry to tell, and in essence they still end up being the hero of their own story.

I don't know how you intend to design the game...I get the feeling that it may draw some parralels to one of the endings of DA:O where you don't really end up the hero (aka you choose somebody else to take the blow in the end).

It'll be an interesting take on an RPG, but personally I don't think it would really work.
