I'm starting to think that polls of this nature are only useful if we can gather additional types of data, such as "genres played", "systems owned", and "hand size". There may just be a correlation.

The Gamecube controller in my and my friend's opinion (who is with me as I write this) is crap compared to both the 360 and PS3 controllers, and he preferred the Gamecube over anything until he got his Wii and 360
As a GameCube owner, I can understand why your friend felt this way. While FPSs never quite worked with a GC controller, I couldn't imagine Super Smash Bros. Melee, F-Zero GX, or Star Wars Rogue Leader handling particularly well with a 360 controller. Those games were too well designed around the hardware specifics. (I Brawl with the GC controller, btw).
I really do think that it's all about what you get used to. During the PS2 and PlayStation days, the consensus was that the dualshock was the king of console controllers. That answer probably has a high correlation with install base. Think about it.
