I wouldn't take it seriously to be completely frank.

How many times does the internets tell me I've won a million dollars? Or that I am the 1,000,000th visitor and have won a shopping spree?

But if they came to me and asked me sincerely. I would shut the damn thing down.

Mind you given the opportunity I'd probably shut the whole internets down. But yeah... Facebook in a heartbeat. Aside from letting people reconnect with people they've let slip out of their lives, and offering yet another 'social' (I use the term lightly) medium for ex's and crazies to stalk people from... It's done absolutely nothing to help anyone. I mean really. What is the argument FOR facebook other then, "Other people like it" or "It helps people socialize."

I mean come on. There was a time when we all socialized without facebook. Why are people so dependent on it now?

If it would mean that i wouldn't get emails from strange people asking me to befriend them on facebook i say 'yes', other than that it doesn't matter to me, if facebook would shut down for whatever reason there are plenty of alternatives, neither of which i am using right now, i prefer to contact my friends by phone.

You're on your computer. It's late at night. You come across a page on Facebook. Maybe you were looking through your news feed. Maybe you don't even have an account and are just following a link. Either way, you come across it.

A window pops up bearing the Facebook logo. It says one thing: Would you like to permanently shut down Facebook? Two buttons present themselves underneath the query, "Yes" and "No". You have no clue. You have no idea of what this could mean. Is it a joke? Is it serious? Should you pass up this opportunity? Should you just ignore it all together?

Now, it comes down to it. What do you do? It might be telling the truth. You might actually have this power before you. Do you waste it? Do you click "No", exit out of the window, ignore it all together? Because you don't trust it? Would you actually take it seriously enough to just ignore it? Because you actually like Facebook? Because you feel you don't have the right to make that kind of life-changing decision?

Or, do you click "Yes"? Do you use the power that has been given to you? Because you hate Facebook? Because you feel Facebook has perverted or hindered society in some way? Maybe you'll do it just to see if it will really happen. Because you believe it's all a joke or isn't real. Or maybe you'll do it just because you can.

Click either "Yes" or "No". Be honest. If a window like this really popped up, what would you really do? It's just a single browser window after all... What harm could it do?

Decide, and explain your reasons. Question other's. Discuss.
I would start a virus scan because pop-ups like that are a sign of being infected with some bad shit.

But if it was real, I wouldn't. Not only because I use the site and I don't want to be a massive douche, but there would be very horrible legal consequences.

No.

I find this a tad ironic coming from a site primarily about gaming, where we spend forever listening to people's stupid fucking reasonings behind trying to ban games because they don't play or understand them.
Thank you.

Would I shut down Facebook? No. I'm not enough of an arrogant twat to presume that I know what's best for millions of people.

If it's just a choice between shutting it down or not, then no. That would just be mean.

On the other hand, I'd sure like to eliminate some aspects of it, make it more secure.

You missed my point completely. I couldn't care less if you use facebook or not, but my point is that if facebook disappearing is such a "life changing" thing then the people who's life will change because one website disappears already don't have much of a life in the first place. A life that is centered around facebook isn't a life.

I'd click yes. I'm old school and contact my friend by phone and talk to them face to face. Also, people I've lost contact with I've usually lost contact with them for a reason and my life wouldn't benefit any further from resuming contact with them.
Yeah it may be responsible for streamlining human relations but I think there's a downside to it that's yet to be fully realised.

I don't begrudge others who use it, but they'll learn to adapt without it just like they've learned to adapt with it.

Considering it's pretty much my only way to keep in contact with friends...
No. I would not.

Why would anyone vote yes?

Facebook is the best way to keep in touch with people and statuses are like mass text invites on where everyone plans to hang out. has a bunch of other non stalker uses as well XD

Id vote a million times no

While I'd love to see the reactions of some people, no.

I don't believe I have the right to cut off something a shit-ton of people enjoy. Besides, how else will I fuck around at work?

Meh, voted no. While it would be no great loss if it was gone, it is rather convenient for organising events, spamming my friends with pictures of cats, and keeping in contact with friends in different time zones without using email.

I'd click yes. Two reasons:

1. I hate Facebook.
2. Any site dumb enough to have a page that says "Do you want to shut this site down? YES NO" that actually shuts the site down if I click yes deserves to die. So either the button is real and Facebook rightfully dies for being so damn stupid, or it doesn't work and it didn't matter that I clicked yes.

Also, to the people who are going "OMG NO HOW WOULD I KEEP IN TOUCH WITH PEOPLE I DON'T BOTHER TALKING WITH ELSEWHERE HOW COULD YOU SHUT IT DOWN!" Facebook is just one social networking site. There are others, so please scale back the drama. You're acting like Facebook going away would bring about the end of the world as we know it, when in reality all you would do is just sign up for the next site. Remember, MySpace used to be the hip place to have a profile, and now it's about to die. These sites come and go, so if Facebook left, there would just be another to take its place.

I understood your post perfectly. All because someone's life revolves around a website doesn't mean they don't have much of a life. How can you even measure someone's life? Your definition of a life will be different as anyone elses.
Hell, I can even be technical here by saying the absence of Facebook will effect most people's lives in one way or another.
