If It was a softer drug, Eg, E's, or MDMA, yeah sure, I would give it a go.

But I already know what heroin can do it people, and even without the legal risks, I still wouldn't do it.

You'd have to be mad. From what I've read, it's like heaven in that you feel relaxed, sleepy, blissful etc, but long term, you just let your life and health fall apart, while supporting a vile trade that ruins lives because of the massive criminal involvement. How much criminal involvement there would still be if it was legalised is questionable.

Plus it's like jacking directly into your pleasure centre, so all other sources of pleasure pretty much lose their attraction, so exercise, sex, social interaction including looking after babies, keeping a clean house etc go down the toilet. It's like WOW raised to the power of television.

No way. Tobacco is hard enough to stay away from one you get hooked, and I've heard that heroine is comparable in terms of addictiveness. If tobacco was as unhealthy as heroine, I'd have died years ago.
You're kidding right? Tobacco is like candy compared to heroine in terms of addictive properties.

The jury is still out on whether smoking is anything more than habitual addiction. I'd certainly argue that it isn't chemical like heroine.
I've actually read this too in a science magazine. While you dont get hooked as fast on nicotine as on heroine, the addictive properties of nicotine are HUGE.

There are two kinds of addiction, mental and physical. Afaik for example acid is not physically addictive (as in you dont go into withdrawal if you dont get it). Nicotine and heroine on the other hand, is.
I completely disagree. There is massive contention about the addictive properties of a cigarette at the minute.

There's a reason things such as hypnotherapy and substitute cigs are more effective at combating cig addiction than nicotine patches and gum.

The act of smoking a cigarette is more important to smoker than the nicotine hit they get from it. In mine and a lot of other peoples opinions, it's a habitual addiction. The act of smoking is the reward people are looking for. Not the rush of chemicals.

You can quite cigs cold turkey and have nothing more than psychological withdrawals such as irritability (in very extreme cases). If you try to quite heroine cold turkey. There's a slight chance of death because of the chemical dependance you've built up.

They are not comparable addictions, and any scientist who would tell you otherwise is merely sensationalising.

Your opinion is irrelevant. What about some sources to back up such a sensationalist claim?

As far as most studies and scientists are concerned nicotine is a chemically addictive drug, with very clear physical withdraw symptoms. So come on, back up your bullshit mate.
Mine is not the sensationalist claim you dolt.

And I've been down this road before. Spending upwards of 2 hours tracking down tons of sources only to have the other person say, 'well that's just their opinion'. I'm not about to spend another few hours of my life tracking down years old journal entries so you can just ignore them and toodle along.

And besides the point, even if you believe they are chemically addictive, that's a far fucking cry from being as chemically addictive as heroine. You don't die from coming off cigs cold turkey.
I think the "As addictive as heroin (Which is on some packets in the UK) refers to the qutting rate, which is indeed lower than heroin. However, if someone wants to quit heroin, then they really will try. Much easier to give up something that's not even close to immediately detrimental. There are physical withdrawal effects of quitting nicotine, which I'll disagree with you on, having had them myself. I wasn't even irritable, I just slept way more than normal and shaky hands and stuff like that. However, I was addicted to nicotine, not smoking, and puked once.

You're right, though, that's not even close to what a heroin addict is like, even if the withdrawal is shorter. It was no Trainspotting.

And to just answer the topic, legality has nothing to do with me not ever wanting to touch it. If I did want to take it, legality wouldn't even have factored into that decision.

No, I've been around heroin addicts, I'm not stupid enough to think there is such a thing as a controlled abuse of the drug.
Anyone who does is a fucking fool.
Heroin, or diactylmorphine, is still used in hospitals as an analgesic. There is such thing as a controlled dose.
Except it's mainly used in palliative care. Where dosing the crap out of someone with diamorphine is not going to have long term effects.

Has anybody seen "Requiem for a Dream"?

Yeah, I'll do without the heroin, thanks.
That is one brutal film... I thought there would be some happiness somewhere in it.

OT; I woundn't do it, but I'm all for the decriminalisation of every drug.

On another note, has anyone here ever seen a great tv series called 'The Wire'. Relating to this topic are the story of Bubbles, one of the greatest tv characters of all time, and Hamsterdam. Only The Wire fans will know what I'm on about there...

No.

Heroin is, as already stated, very addictive, and people have ruined their lives over it and other drugs like it.

Nicotine and alcohol is as far as I'll go.
I see what you did there.

I have an addictive nature, I binge on everything I enjoy and do none of it in moderation, luckily what I enjoy involves no harmful substances, I do 48 hours plus gaming sessions multiple times a month and the same with whatever else I'm in the mood for so I don't need something that is even more addictive and is dangerous.

It's a no for me, I don't even drink because I know if I get into it I will really go for it.

Having seen first-hand just how bad heroin junkies can get, no way. It becomes your life. I'd rather go for LSD, or mushrooms, or marjiuana instead. I would probably try those if given the opportunity.

Pretty sure alcohol has more victims than heroin.

Anyway, on topic - No. One of my uncles was a heroin addict, and my aunt is (last time we saw her). Not good.

I'm all for legalising it to an extent, though. The more drugs are legalised and available, the less criminal activity surrounds it.

No. Heroin is crazy addictive and one of the hardest drugs to be on. It's just...bad. If nearly any other drug was legalised I'd try, but I draw the line at shit like Heroin, crack and meth.
Not as addictive as smoking cigarettes. Since cigarettes are the hardest things to quit from once your addicted and i have sucessfully quit smoking cold turkey , i'm not afraid of addictions anymore so i'd try it.

would I try something that's practically guaranteed to leave me unquittably chemically addicted to it... no, for the short answer.
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, for the long answer.

I've tried weed, I drink booze, I don't smoke.

I'm no alcoholic, I go months between drinks sometimes, other times I'll have a beer after work every couple days, it's never been a problem for me, as I have other, better coping mechanisms to keep me from emotionally relying on a substance, as far as I know heroin causes extreme physical chemical addiction that is (due to it's severity) pretty well a lifelong thing.

As an interesting sidenote, its believed that heroin addiction only became a major problem after it was made illegal. When it was legal there was a relatively small number of people using it (And they were mostly clustered in one or two areas per country) and they could easily obtain more so withdrawal (And the violence caused by it) was never a problem. It was considered a rich mans drug in those days. As soon as it became illegal it became seen as taboo which meant that it became cool to try it so the number of users skyrocketed across the world and there wasn't enough supply to match demand.

OT: No I wouldn't. In the words of the great and powerful Lemmy "I never took heroin. I'd much rather be predator than prey."
