Edit: The second option is 'Perhaps, if it's cheap.' Dunno why it won't edit.

Okay, lets face it, the industry has never been coy about ripping off Nintendo, be it the D-Pad, thumb-stick, using a handheld as a second controller, motion controls, or <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/10052-PlayStation-All-Stars-Battle-Royale-Review>this. What I'm curious about is whether their new controller design will catch on. Original buttons, triggers and analogue sticks complete with handles will be still there, just complimented by a medium-sized touchscreen.

Do you think touchscreens might bring in enough versatility? Have you been convinced by its use in the NDS or WiiU, or do you at least have ideas of your own? I think it would be cool if you could have a tiny keyboard on the touchscreen so that games would let you type, like in, say, Vampires: Bloodlines - The Masquerade, or Digital: A Love Story. Home console users are certainly missing out on <url=http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/11/22/wot-i-think-scribblenauts>Scribblenauts.

I'm curious about your thoughts.

Okay, this is a little weird, why isn't it showing up on Gaming Discussion?

Touch screens leave fingerprints, and for some reason fingerprints on my screen trigger an OCD-like need to clean them off. I never touch the screen on my DS, always use the stylus. I bought a stylus pen specifically for my iPad. So no, I cannot abide touch screens. But as long as my stylus pen works for it, I won't complain too much.

That is, if I but a next gen console, which seems unlikely. I have yet to unpack my 360 from when I moved in August. And short of possibly wanting to play Rock Band, I don't see myself wanting to anytime soon.

I have no feelings either way.

A touchscreen could be good, and it could be bad. We will have to wait and see.

No. I don't want any stupid, pointless gimmicks to make consoles seem technically savvy. Just give the same controllers that have worked for years, and don't need fixing or changing.

Personally, no. I don't want anything that will require me to take my eyes off the (main) screen. That's a surefire way to break immersion, which is hard enough to come by as it is.

Possibly, perhaps allowing people to use their smartphones (Android + iPhone included too, MS) and tablets would be more suited and cheaper for all parities involved. Not to mention probably providing a more accurate touch experience due to decent capacitive screens.

You want the controls of a DS mounted on a controller for a large-scale console? No, that's silly. I mean, don't you remember the inherent problem with the N64 controller? The joke about the kid with three hands? Magnify that one and add a third eye for laughs.

Nope, the touch screen is just going to increase the price while adding very little. Also lots of games will have frustratingly useless gimmicks just to demo the tech.

No def not.

It just seems a bit too gimmicky for me. A higher specced machine in a (mildly) pretty box will do me just fine thank you very much.

With possibly just a tiny dash of hurry the fuck up.

As the standard controller? No.

As an option like PS Move, or Kinect. Yea, sure. Why not.

EDIT: I do like the touch screen Keyboard idea though, better than having a full size one sitting beside your console.

Not really. It would only account as a gimmick (like the sixaxis), which means at launch every game and its mother will have a stupid use for it, and when everyone realize how pointless it is, everyone will forget it exists; but controllers will still be expensive because of the need to support them.

I think the Wii U looks like a pretty good system. Thus, I'm going to buy a Wii U. Which means I won't really have any particular reason to buy two more of them. So hopefully that isn't what the other two systems will be.

touch screens are.... ehh... ness. evil for what they are generally used for. Controller, yeah I could see the desire to have a mini touch screen keypad, or be able to navi root menus on a console, but really, that would increase cost, as well as ergonomic real estate that is far too precious for a good balanced controller and when it is all said and done, the practicality of it is pretty nominal.

Yes, because control pads need more options for, y'know, controlling things.

Moving some of the buttons out of the way onto a touchscreen in the center would be great for menu/non-combat options. Also, the control pad doesn't even have to change shape, i'm pretty sure valve(?) had some design documents around with a touchscreen controller which was more like a 360 pad.

Do i think it should be a second 'screen' though? No, not really. I'm thinking of something like a 3" screen roughly replacing the area where the 'xbox' button is on a 360 pad.

The 360 and PS3 are far from the pinnacle of gaming, they need a lot of work. Input devices is just one of the areas. A touchscreen would overcome some of the limitations of controllers.

No, because that would be the ultimate admission that the industry is out of ideas. I'm psyched for the Wii U, but I don't need two different versions of the Wii U to play on. Come up with something new for once guys.
