Why would they spend years getting the game to this stage, and with the players spending years getting their characters to whatever stage, only to make a new game?

And has anyone ever played an MMO for the "story"?

I say no, because realising a whole new game of WoW is stupid, its and online game, so it would be weird to release a second version and Blizzard is a succseful company. So of coarse there going to realise more content, they always are.

Its an MMO so it is to be expected; it looks fun enough to make me play it again casually.

The story is not that hard either, expansions are chronologically storywise so:
You level with all the minor trouble, dungeons bla bla.
You stop The war in searing gorge (BWL/MC) stop the dudes in Zul'Grub stop c'thun and after that Naxxramas comes chilling around the corner.
After some "peace" the dark portal is reopened so we go in to stomp Illidan's Rise to power and stop Keal'Thas's plan to summon Kil'jeaden.
After that the lich king tries again so we take the battle to his turf, make our move into icecrown and shut down naxxramas for sure. We do a preemptive strike on Yogg'Saron before he gets too strong. Train a bit in a Colosseum and then kill the lich king.
Soon Deathwing bursts open an elemental plane, shit hits the fan and you go to kill that.

Oh no, new content? Sure a new game would be fun but don't forget Diablo 3.
Different design teams, apparently in entirely different buildings. We'll have our Diablo 3 eventually.

As a player of Guild Wars, I can say that no, it isn't. Guild Wars is making a sequel, but I'd rather have several more campaigns.
Yes, it can get convoluted. But it's called a MASSIVELY multiplayer online roleplaying game. It's supposed to be a large setting with tons of stuff to do.

And yes, I am excited about GW2 (Charr are awesome), but I wouldn't mind having gotten Utopia either.

You know, even though you guys may have good points, some points are quite off.

WoW and its three expantions can easily be compared to Prison Break. The first was marvelous, new and epic. The second sucked whilst the third one returned the series to all its glory. But, the fourth was weird, stupid, too long and it complicated matters far too much. Not only did Prison Break's 4th season suck more than an Uwe Boll movie, it was the downfall of a great series.
Now, pretend Prison Break is WoW and that all of these seasons were crammed in to a single game, with every event happening at the same time, with live events happening as well.
I mean, new players can access the SW harbor when it wasn't even built. New players can go to Shatrath when it wasn't even accessible back then. NPC's are gone, new ones are there that shouldn't be there, there are live events going on for WOTLK like the invasion or entire areas are changed to fit the story for WOTLK when new players still have to do regular quests there.

Same goes for Cataclysm, it will completely destroy continuity by wrecking havoc on all of Azeroth. As I said, older players will find it okay. New players however will say: fuck this.

I think it's good that they're still working on something that was released 6 years ago, it shows real effort on their part.

I do see a future "WoW II" coming one days since they are basically fucking up the entire story by doing stuff the way they do now, but that's after they have grinded as much money out of the present world of warcraft as possible.

Do you think that Blizz is going to far with World of Warcraft by adding yet another expansion? Instead of making it a new game entirely. By now, the story of the world is so convoluted, it's practically impossible to follow. With every new expansion comes a whole new set of story archs and changes to previous expansion quests up to the point where Outlands is an actual and current threat to the world whilst at the same time, people are pissing there pants for another current threat that's actually taking place years in the future (Lich King) And now they're expecting new players to follow? I mean, those of us that have been there for years can probably follow easily. But new players are totally screwed.

Should Cataclysm just go beyond being an expansion and become World of Warcraft 2? Or are you satisfied with it cluttering up the game even further?
If you find WoW's story hard to follow, learn to pay attention. It is very simple to follow. The story progresses as you level. And no, a WoW 2 would never be a good idea and Blizz knows this.

Take the time to read quest text, its not hard to follow in the slightest.

Terrible idea. I vote no.
Let me summarize the story in as few sentances as i can:

Titan becomes evil, posses a wizard who makes a portal that lets demons and orcs in azeroth.
wars ensue for domination. lich king is made, completely fucks everything up. so begins the aftermath aka WoW.

Yes. WoW has a great story. Several quest storylines are epic, well worth time and effort spent on them.

Also, FFXI is worth playing for the story as well.

As far as WoW going to far... no. While most of their new content focuses on Endgame content, there are a few exceptions. Blood Elf, Draenai and Death Knight starting areas are all examples of places in the old world that are not endgame and worth playing. I'm looking forward to the new expansion. For years I have done the level grind the same way, and it will be nice to finally actually quest in azshara. Barrens has always been good for leveling but I have spent too much time there. It will be refreshing to see some of the changes. Other changes don't look so good. It looks like they are taking the rational leaders out of power and putting in warmongering bastards in their place, or killing them off (Cairne, NOOO). In the fact that they are forcing pvp action on us, they may be going too far. Changing quests and adding new race-class combinations is gonna be pretty sweet too (tired of only seeing cows and NE as druids much?). It's a fun game, but there are a few who will resist the change and insist that 'vanilla' WoW servers stay up for them, and I have no problem with that.

actually thats one of the maing points of why i was hesitant to actually start playing WOW, the lore is so extended and convoluted i thougth "damn, i`m never going to get the game"

but after a few weeks of playing, i have no idea of what the story is or what the point of it all is, instead i find my self appealed by the fact that my lvl 31 priest is the only scribe in my guild and am making tons of gold and have quite a nice set of eq

still... i might not understand the whole story, but i`m having fun exploring the game and finding new things to do (the areas are amazing)

only thing, with cataclysm, its like a new start, i am getting used to some of the areas, and now they are going to change them all to a post-apocaliptic era!? it might be nice, because now i am among the few people who are discovering WOW, but after Cataclysm, we are all going to be descovering a new WOW, new quests, new begginings... it might be worth my while... and it also means the "past" lore will be left in a different era, and all this new era will beggin a new lore with me as a part of the beggining

so no, i dont think they are going to far, i think they are doing the next possible reasonable step before closing down a game with so many followers they would be pissed off, and WOW2 will have to get all those from WOW1 wich i dont really thing they would be able to handle right now, unless they actually wipe out all WOW1 data and make them all start anew in WOW2

It's depressing to see just how few people know anything about the story. I used to play on an RPG server, but I had to quit because everybody was being a goddamn retard. (Azeroth's vampires are 9 feet tall and purple, for fucks sake!!!!!!!) Seriously, the storyline is so good, I wish more people would read the books.

Personally I would have set World of Warcraft 2 in that world's future so that there is little lore from the first game to come as well. Sort of like 200 years after the Lich King was defeaten, a new enemy rises and a whole new set of races and alliences must come and conquer it. There would still be an Allience and a Horde, but a lot of new races like the ones already coming to Cataclysm and some others. Make WoW 2 the endgame so that after the Lich King in Wow 1, there could still be less massive, but very important events.

So if you make Cataclysm WoW2, you can still make other expansions that deal with like old races from WoW 1 rising again and wanting to claim the world for themselves. Or something, I dunno. let WoW meander out like it should have done after Lich King.

Wait... youre dismissing the idea of more content as bad? Sure, I don't play WoW, but what I've heard from my mates is that the endgame is pretty much 'dead', so new content doesn't seem as a very bad idea.

Also, EVE Online has had twelve expansions, and is still going strong.

I'd consider the mere existence of a monthly subscription to be "going too far" long before expansions that add legitimate content.

And in any case, 3 expansions for WoW is a far cry from the sixteen expansions of WoW's parent, Everquest. I'd sooner complain about that, but it follows the same deal that anything in a free market does. If you value the money that you could spend for something more than the something in question, don't buy it.

If people feel like wasting their time and money on something essentially average, but addictive, that's good enough for me. But personally I think they shouldn't have let the "getting to 85" the prologue of the "real" game
