really I do not understand all this WoW cult-like religion. the game it self is bland the controls have little to no use all you need is the 1-0keys and the mouse and its the click and wait for some one to fall down.

Honestly its been done before Maybe not with the backing of big money but I seen games for free that are better at what wow tried to do and with more invoation.

while the Behemoth called WOW is shadowing the market you can't go any where with out hearin for the hoard some times and its driving me crazy.

Games such as Mabinogi,Shin Megami Tesnsi Imagine games that require skill And games like KAL and SAVAGE go unnoticed because of the cult that follow wow to the ends of all time

really in my school there is someone that actually hates me for stating wow just has money thats all and told them to try MegaTen a free online game that is more inovative than 100 wow expansion packs so here is the question fot you.

DO you think that WoW is the best out there? or Just something that gets the most spotlight because it was made by a company that had money to advertise and say its one of the most active rpgs in the world

Blizard aprrently my defintion of game and yours are diffrent and active is no where near close

and the player base could just drop all this ally vs hoard crap a game is a game leave any fude in there and don't go around acting like your king of the world because you have more money and no way close to a life to be the best in wow is spend the most time

gaming was based on skill and skill needs time to practice it shouldn't be about how many times you ran some raid to get the level 80 uber gear that gets nerfed the instant a new patch comes out making you run for more gear

thats a carrot on a stick and I am not a rabbit I play games that compell me to continue find out what is goign to happen and be stronger because you need to investigate an area with monsters that will kill you for just looking at them

So
Is wow good?
Or
bad?

Please no flaming and please support a reason

edit: i noticed two votes with no reason given that is not the point of this thread I want to know what you think

I believe it is BAD.

reason: you pay monthly for a game that repeats the same general idea with every expansion pack (new areas randomly appearing making you act like it was there all along) and endless grinding. That's all it is, GRINDING!!!

On the other hand you could argue that it is good as it has a long gameplay potential, but again I feel that this is a marketing ploy by blizzard to rake in more cash from your monthly subscription.

I chose good, just throwing that out there.

But lets look at it from a completely objective (if possible) standpoint.

WoW is a monolithic game. Like those games that were its predecessors; Everquest, Ultima, SWG, etc. It is known for having monthly fees and large fanbases.

This game may not, and is probably will not be the best game of the genre, but it is the most commercially successful. So when MMORPGs are mentioned in passing it is commonly thought of as WoW as the general example.

WoW is far from perfect, it has inspired fanaticism that has proven both ludicrous and potentially lethal. Its gameplay is based around the repitive killing of creatures and fetch quests (Grinding to those in to MMO know.) And although the makers have referred to WoW as a casual RPG, it takes a very long time to reach endgame, and then raids and other high end experiences can take 4+ hours.

WoW isn't a bad thing either, but that is the key thing. All things are both good and bad, GTA is violent, but it is a high selling game narrating a US immigrant story from the seedy underbelly of organized crime.

But that is just one opinion... and trust me, the gaming industry could do a lot worse than WoW.

I personally like WoW, I've always thought they did a very good job on the game. I've tried many other MMOGs but I always return to WoW. To each his own I guess.

WoW has good lore and it's big. People play this game for various reasons:
1. Lore. People find WoW lore interesting and they like to be part of it even if it's virtual and doesn't exist in real life.

2. Friends. Many older people and children group up in WoW to socialize. It's straightfoward and simple. People find friend's and expand their knowledge etc(of course this applies only to sensible members not geeks who are raiding and have no life).

3. Raiding. Seems many people think that their ability equals their time spent on raiding. In reality its not. Still many people play WoW only for that reason and I feel sorry for them.

4. Game is simple and straightfoward. There are no complex features and game can be playied simplu and with no hassle. The controls are simple and progressin is straightfoward. Many games fail because they think complex and often stupid stuff could bring more subscribers to the fold. But unfortunately they fail.

I generally think that Wow is a good game, that can be played at a multitude of different levels. I have a hard time believing that its is simply advertising that has made WoW as popular as it is.

The only game that you mentioned I have had any real experience with was savage, and while fun, I don't think can be legitimately compared to WoW. Savage is more shooter then rpg, so it will appeal to a completely different gamer.

As for comparing it to other free to play MMO's, well they all use similar systems with tiny innovations here and there. The question is are these innovations enough to cause people to switch games. Age of Conan had a combat system that I thought was innovative and challenging, but the learning curve was a tad steep in my opinion.

I think part of the allure of WoW is that it easy to learn, and that is one primary issue MMO's have generally always had... accessibility. If you want to be successful with the MMO business model, you have to have make it easy for players to get into it.

WoW is just a well executed game that is still accessible to new players, and is challenging and interesting enough that it can keep its old guard.

Personally, it's lost its lustre for me over the past year. I think Blizzard is more catering to casual gamers and heavy PvP'ers in recent patches, while I much prefer RP and PvE aspects of MMO's. Personally, I think LotRO does the PvE/questing scene better than WoW does, from what I've experienced. Blizzard decides to cram most of their fun quests into the endgame, and with Cataclysm, I think they'll possibly ruin it further. Making every quest a 'fun' quest just reinforces the fact that you're stuck in the same boring grind.

Its good and bad to me. Overall, its a solid game, I still play it. It has decent lore, its raiding doesn't get matched, and they finally got around to saying that they went the wrong direction with their PvP recently. They have a lot of innovative ideas, especially if you've ever seen the Icecrown quest phasing, and how an evolving MMO can start to work. My main issues with it right now are merely the outdated content pre 60, and the 80$ game cost, both of which the next expansion may be looking to remedy(cost is the maybe).

On the other side, I do call it bad. It has created a closed mindedness to MMOs which I really hate. I tend to play a lot as they come out, look at all the mechanics, and some interesting ones do come out. The only issue is WoW is so big that it creates a kind of vacuum. Its not worth it to invest in a game under 1 million subscribers, or its just ripping off WoW, which was obviously the first MMO that invented the systems used now. Its just inflated to the point where the average player only sees WoW and its history for MMOs, and its hard as hell for others to come up, because they obviously pull everything from WoW, or the launch isn't as pristine as WoW, which had a horrible launch compared to many now.

(Note: Last paragraph is perceptions I see a lot when dealing with other MMOs looking at release.)

I despise WoW with a passion. Still, the majority of this is an inherrent problem in the very concept of MMOs.

MMOs are based around the concept of teamwork, community, and responsibility. In short, the kind of cooperation and discipline necessary for actual tactics.

The inherrent flaw in this is that 99% of the online community are quixotic overweight social rejects convinced they're god's gift to man. Chronic WoW players seem to cultivate this shit-headed elan, apparently having forgotten that it's a fucking game.

It's a basic psychological fact that: everyone thinks they're better than average. Most people at least learn to keep their own falibility at the back of their mind, but as I've continuously said: most people seek an online life because they lack the EQ to have a real one. You're dealing with five-year olds in essance.

So when things go wrong, things escalate into blame wars where people have this sort of sorrowful online contest based around the formula "well my dick has an X gear score and Y achievements". Most raiding groups at the higher levels in WoW only accept players who've already done the raid before, which serves both to discourage new players and to further give them a false sense of achievement when these people should be dead if natural selection was still a factor in the modern world. If anyone ever admits that anything was actually their fault, they're almost always kicked - both as a result and in turn causing this doublespeak norm.

In short, due to the social ineptitude that drives people to serious online gaming in the first place, any hope of friendly community interaction is destroyed.
Due to everyone's convinction that nothing is every their fault, trying to facilitate any actual teamwork is like attempting to build a dog sled team out of a random pack of schizophrenic jackals tripping acid.

MMOs must die.

WoW is good because it is popular that is the best way to say it.

It happened because it was overall good(well depends what you like I don't like it at all too much grinding) MMO.

I say overall is it caters to a lot of different types of playing in both PvP and PvE arch types. I mean if you don't like it go play Guild Wars with me or something.

Yes, its bland, but it was the first MMO that caught the mainstream public and as a result, went viral because everyone and their dog was playing it.

Its not really that innovative, wasnt really when it first came out.. Its just fun to play with friends.

okay this may be a personal gripe but really wasd and space to jump should have a purpose
if i run away i don't want ot be hit if i use space to jump its because i want ot go some where higher and if i cand do all tihs with some rather intuitive mouse clicks then yea WASD shouldn't be needed

and 1.
There is no story or lore other than here is badguys kill they ass other than the occasinal so thel ich king's real name is etc etc some of the story curves i can see around from 6 miles away

if you want story and Intuitive controls with simple interface

Shin Megami tensai imagine online

the story quests make me want to play them cause there are so many Curves and 90 degree spins that you have no clue what the next thing will make you do

Really i've read better storys and played better games

Good for you. Now instead of wasting everyone's time with a pointless WoW bashing thread, go read better stories and play better games. While you at it, learn to use proper punctuation and decent grammar.
