The simple fact is this: WoW is too popular. No game can even get close to its overwhelming fanbase.
Even if a company did manage to create an MMO that could rival WoW it still wouldnt succeed, because it would probably only ovetake WoW graphically, every single other aspect of WoW is polished so much, that without copying what they did exactly, no new MMO could match.

It has probably the worlds easiest learning curve, but it doesnt make you feel stupid. It has been developed so that lower levels only need to know/understand about 10% of what max levels do. It's also incredibly well designed (bar graphics) and fun to play, and it's fanbase is huge, partly because of what i have just mentioned, but also because A)It covers pretty much any age group and both genders equally, and B) because it has sub-standard graphics it will pretty much run on any machine, and it only requires a 56k modem to play online.

Don't get me wrong, i think that other MMO's will be / are good, but they will always be compared with WoW. It set the standard for MMO's and i dont think another MMO will set a new standard for a very long time.

Like I said, killers never work. Saint's Row 2 came close but GTA is still more popular.

I don't think it will kill it but hopefully TOR stands up as its prime competitor and steals a ton of subscribers.

Bethesda's Elder Scrolls MMO (if it is actually gonna happen) might hit WoW hard in the gut

That sounds like it could be quite awesome, as a fan of bethesda (and wow) i could see that happening actually.

Only possible killer I can think of is the "next-gen mmo" by blizzard themselves, presumably it will take at least 10 more years for WoW to start diminish, and a 15 year develop time for blizzard would be monstrous.

I'm actually looking forward to see the big three B's clash

Blizzard ~ Bethesda ~ Bioware

they are all RPG titans. And I'm a fan of their work

they each got an edge.

Bioware's got the SW franchise and it's fanbase, as well as the KotOR fans, plus it's SiFi, so most differentiated of the 3 (which also means it can't really easily take away fantasy fans from the other two)

Blizzard's already well established, with huge funds. Huge loyal following. It can wage a long competitive war, if it decides to.

Bethesda's got it's own TES following. And if it plays out the development properly, it can get a really nice looking game (modern graphics) and intelligent gameplay, which can hurt Blizzard much

Either way, it will be an interesting fight (without taking into consideration the other titles out there)

Well said, there's also the reputation factor, blizzard is known to have a large fan base, (they have a E3 all for themselves) and never made a game that's not a classic. It would be difficult for other companies to compete due to comparatively less fans and skeptical judgments by any possible newcomers.

WoW will probably stay around for a long time, but it will lose the top spot. Everybody thought nothing would beat Everquest, but it did. Before that, no-one though anything would ever beat Ultima Online. Cracks are already showing - LOTR Online may not be about to overtake it, but it has shown it's not invincible.

That said, I don't think any of the properties listed will beat it. Not yet.

I don't see why people label an mmo as "Wow-killer" as if any new game could destroy a well established one. Wow didn't manage to "kill" Everquest, and EQ didn't kill whatever was the hype before it. If the game is great, people will play it, if not they won't and they go back to the game they have been playing for years. Blizzard understands this concept, hence the success of warcraft, they constantly tweak the game to make it better in some way whether it is smoothing the leveling curve or adding end-game content. Will the game fade, yes that is just how gaming goes; We throw ourselves into a game until we find one that appeals more. Companies should focus on making a game that is unique and intriguing and focus less on "can we drag people from Wow". Stop wondering if it will kill Wow and instead ask does it appeal to yourself. Because in the end, your subscription is the thing that determines the games lifespan.

It's between GW2 and Star Wars one of them will do it. WoW will never truely die like everything it has become popular so it will never fully fall otu of the spot light. GW2 will be my MMO poison when it comes out as I am personally not partial to WoW but that said people like it's grind with friends forumla so.

I don't think wow will die simply because it has become so many people's game of choice, and they wouldn't change even if shown something that was superior to it in most respects. You just have to look at cs 1.6, hell that game is 10 years old and it still has so many dyed in the wool followers who refused to migrate to css or cod or what not.

If anyone can do it, it is the Star Wars universe. I mean, I hope all the WoW players go to Star Wars so I can have my FFXIV.

I played Aion for the first month. Pretty much ALL of them were WoW players. "Lol, noob. I pwn you. ROFL! Get good!"

/sigh

they need a future tech action MMO to kill wow. that's what i want. or maybe somthing thats a mix. maybe a mmo that has different servers that represent past present and future and you can time travel and when you do somthing on one server i can actually effect what happens on the other. like the past server can affect the future if you do something drastic, whooly shit i need to write this down...(scribble scribble)

Wow is an unstoppable monster that snatches the souls of people and grips them and their subscriptions tightly.

speaking of which i haven't done my dailies today.
