All reviews are some bollocks opinion out of a random guy's ass. I don't see why Yahtzee's reviews would be worth any less or more than any other review. The only review worth anything to you is one *you* wrote.

I actually find it humorous that people presume to know what Yahtzee does and doesn't do - especially regarding this web site.

I've kinda met him in person (was an extra in a Game Damage skit), and have watched all the Zero Punctuation clips, and know him enough to say I don't know him at all - outside of his ZP character.

For all anyone knows, he does view these forums and posts under an alias.

Then again, maybe the thought of interacting with half the people in these forums makes him want to gnaw his own head off to prevent the possibility of that ever happening.

I don't know... and neither do you.

(Next people are going to start calling Rebecca Mayes a game reviewer, too.)
Maybe you're Ben Croshaw!

Really? Wasn't the Painkiller review funny?

Honestly all the fanboys who say "oh, be negative when you're positive you're not funny" are a bunch of idiots. You can be funny positive and negative, it's just how you phrase it. But he seems to cater to the fans for the most part so his reviews are largely negative, then when these same fans watch the reviews they so "oh it's just comedy, not serious reviews".
I'm fairly certain Yahtzee has shown a distaste for catering or paying any attention to his fans...ever, so I'm going to go ahead and say that his review's aren't negative because we want them to be that way.
Well it's just comedy because you want it to be just comedy.
Maybe if he could actually have the artistic freedom to be positive or negative it would be more of a review and all you little goofs could shut your traps.
You may notice that even in his positive reviews it's focus is still comedy (Which I will assume you acknowledge, given your first statement). I'd say it's comedy because that's what it was intended to be.
If Yahtzee is reading this thread, I ask one thing:

Do you consider your segments legitimate reviews?

Because a lot of people don't.
I'm damn certain he has addressed this before with a resounding "No" in an interview.

P.S. He's never on our forums, he isn't reading this.
Personally I think they are reviews, because I'm intelligent enough(ego stroking - jboking) to catch that little bit at the game where he gives his final verdict of whether its worthwhile or not. Just the 4 minutes of negative ranting before that are to please the little 12-14 year olds.
Well, concerning most of his videos are about 5 minutes long, this would mean you are getting a minute review. That doesn't seem like a legitimate review to me at all. Of course, you've already stated that he spends most of his time on the episodes as an entertainer. So which do you think he is, entertainer or serious reviewer?

I'm going to lean towards entertainer.

OP: I don't care if Yahtzee feels like being nice or a jerk, so long as it's witty.

I watch Yahtzee for brutally honest reviews from a critic who shares the kind of cynicism about the industry that many of us have.

Nah - the fact that he's overly critical actually lends a bit of weight to games he actually says are good, plus he seems to be bashing games less these days... So perhaps he is here, watching us, mocking our cluelessness from his Australian doom fortress...

I've never actually disagreed with his overall opinion of a game; Sonic needs to die, we need to send a terminator back through time to burn bungie to the ground before they release Halo, e.t.c. Though to be fair I haven't played all of them.

The only thing I kind of wish he'd drop is his whole analogies of himself which I assume are there for shock value. The best example being in his review of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story where he ham-handedly segues in a rambling speech about how much he hates children: no offense, but what the bleeding hell does that have to do with anything?

Besides, it's funnier to bash something than to like it as rule of thumb. And he's mostly there for humor. And it's his niche to bash games, having started off on Fable (can you blame him?) and having been positively reinforced for dismembering a slew of god-awful games since then.

So no, he shouldn't be more positive. I think his balance is fine as is.

i supose the whole "simply ripping it apart" is the main humour of the video, i stopped taking it as an "Offical" review and just listend to it as if it was a very unhappy friend talking about a game...or many people talking about the same game, one picking up the sentence after another :)

I guess it really relies on the game, if there are tons of bad things then bash the fuck out of it (Sonic Unleashed) but if it's good then rough it up but don't curb stomp it

I'd say he does because if the game is good, everyone will have read about the good stuff in other reviews. Yahtzee picks up on those things other reviewers gloss over.

Ok, there have been a lot of people out there disagreeing with me claiming he's just a comedian and not a true reviewer. I'm calling BS. He has fantastically penitent views on both the good and the bad of games.

Maybe you?re right though, maybe he is just a joke and none of his reviews mean anything other than to just complain about the games.

But I personally stand by the idea that he is a brilliant reviewer who shares my point of view fantastically which makes him great at his JOB which as a reviewer is to not only point out the crap but to lift the gold up so we can see it better.

Then Yahtzee if he wants to be good at his job shouldn't be dependent on OTHER peoples opinions or reveiws... the whole point of EVERY review is that it should stand alone as a personal opinion.

Agreed but it seems like some of the new games he's reviewed that he admits to liking he still curb stomped that's my point.

Ugh, Yahtzinator does fine critisizing games by himself. He's a critic, it's what he does. I don't base my gamebuying opinions solely on what Yahtzee says. I mostly watch ZP for the entertainment value and for a good laugh. Like it's been mentioned before, Yahtzee's more a critic and less a reviewer. He even mentions that he's a critic in the Turok episode if I'm correct. I get more of a kick out of the Wii jokes because I own a Wii and I laugh because they're true.

when he did Arkham Asylam, he said something along the lines of "you dont come to me to hear the good things in a good game."
that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about as being kinda sad. I don't want him to spew bile all the time... I wanna hear the good things.

Doesn't he say it himself that he doesn't review games, he focuses more on a comedic value. Its easier to be comedic about the bad things than the good. However i'm slightly getting bored of his videos as they seem to just run through the same jokes over and over again.

I use Yahtzee?s reviews to know what games I would like to play.
You really shouldn't. Yahtzee is horribly opinionated. He is not a reliable source for information about a game. Since his web series is more about comedy that's not really a problem. But you should never trust only his opinion on a game.

And no, Yahtzee should not be more positive. Him being so negative about a game is what makes it funny.
I still think that he should say what he really likes in a game like the way he did in STALKER, because if he only say the bad things about a game people will think that the game is full of problems. But yeah, keep the negative crap of the game to the max but then near the end just say one thing or two that really caught he's attencion
