He's a critic.
(taken from a definition site.)
1. One who forms and expresses judgments of the merits, faults, value, or truth of a matter.
2. One who specializes especially professionally in the evaluation and appreciation of literary or artistic works: a film critic; a dance critic.
3. One who tends to make harsh or carping judgments; a faultfinder.

I want more 2. and less 3.

I use Yahtzee?s reviews to know what games I would like to play.
You really shouldn't. Yahtzee is horribly opinionated. He is not a reliable source for information about a game. Since his web series is more about comedy that's not really a problem. But you should never trust only his opinion on a game.

And no, Yahtzee should not be more positive. Him being so negative about a game is what makes it funny.
I still think that he should say what he really likes in a game like the way he did in STALKER, because if he only say the bad things about a game people will think that the game is full of problems. But yeah, keep the negative crap of the game to the max but then near the end just say one thing or two that really caught he's attencion
Agreed. I don't wannt get RID of his bashing that's the funny part. But I don't wanna leave the review thinking the game is a pile of crap when he enjoyed it.

Well Yahzee has said (and I think I have this quote right): "You don't call a plumber to redecorate your bathroom [image of a plumber pointing a hose full of brown liquid at a wall] and you didn't come to me to hear how good a game is."

He is after all a critic, and that's what sets his reviews apart.

I don't pay the Y to say nice things about games. I want to hear him make dick jokes and curse alot.

Come to think of it, I don't pay him at all.

And neither do you.

So just keep watching his videos and all will be right in the world. Read IGN reviews if you want to hear sexy wonderful things about games.

I think you mean more 3 and less 2. Yahtzee doesn't need help critiquing games. He nitpicks. If there isn't much to find at fault, he'll say so. Otherwise, he'll list all the problems he had with the game.

Look, guys, i think u are missing the point.
Yahzee does these reviews to tell us what he thinks about the games he reviews... whether he just points out its flaws or actually talks about what he likes in a 'proper' review.

He expresses his view in unique and entertaining ways. But in the end he is still just telling us what he thinks and sees in the game. You guys criticize his 'performance' as a fanbase - always expecting more and more... even when what he does that you love becomes mundane.

To say that his reviews are not as good as before is bull. He bags the crap out of everythin because that is what you want to here and what you want to know. If you dont like what he says then dont listen instead of whinging and whining that your favourite playtoy isnt workin the way you wanted him to.

You're doin a brilliant job yahzee, keep at it

He should do it the way he wants to.
And he'll only listen to others and give feedback if he can bash the shit out of them.

Let's get enough people talking here that Yahtzee HIMSELF posts!!!
That is never going to happen.
Yahtzee doesn't even watch the forums.

Anyway, no.
Every other game site will say good things about a game.
Even if he exaggerates the bad things, at least he acknowledges they're there.

Though I'd never actually buy a game on his recommendation.

I'm so dead....
Wait so.. It's Max? or the OP? Or you? my brain hurts.. :(

He makes a point to mention whether or not the game is good but the entire point of the series is to focus on the flaws. For example, he spends about maybe...30-40 seconds of his Batman review discussing the parts he liked, THEN spent the remainder of his time discussing the faults. If he decided to give a "balanced" review (even amounts of good and bad) then he'd lose his uniqueness.

Personally, I consider him more of a critic/entertainer than a reviewer, but I do take note of his opinion when it comes purchase time. He's not the end-all-be-all, but if he mentions a particularly insufferable gameplay/story mechanic then I'm less inclined to try the game out.

I love Yahtzee's style and think he should keep it up i like hearing a review like that, its like the extreme end, and then you watch game spot to get the overly good, so you see both the best and the worst of it.

technically, you want a reviewer. You want someone to tell you what they think are good, what they think suck, and what they think are wastes of time. This site has plenty of reviewers for you to listen to.

Yahtzee is not a reviewer. He is not even a critic. He does not spend time talking about how games can be improved, how a product can become the best it can be. No, the best way to describe him is that he is a opinion writer. He finds something to talk about in a game and he brings it up. All of his opinion pieces are about things that piss him off in a game. What he does is take the piss out things. Remember the House of the Dead overkill review. He says that he cannot be too harsh on that game "because there is nothing to be gained from taking the piss out of something that has already taken enough piss to drown even the most opened minded prostitute." If the game has flaws, then he will discuss them. If he likes a game, then he will talk about them.

As for the Arkham Asylum game: why should yahtzee praise it? every other gaming medium has already declared it to be game of 2009, some say decade. The majority of gaming sites gave it close to perfect scores already. There is no reason for yahtzee to do the same.

I've always found it interesting to play a game after Yahtzee has reviewed it and picking up on what he says. And in the experience of myself and my friends, we've found that mostly what he says is correct. He makes very good observations on games which others miss, and I still enjoy what he does immensely. I don't think he needs to change, I love the formula he has and I hope he sticks with it. In fact the reviews of his I won't watch are those which he deviates badly from it, such as the ones where he puts on accents or reviewed Wolfenstien in limerick form... not as good.

I like this post. Its more funny listening to him slag the games e.t.c off more then it would be for him to say "this is the best game ever!" I only watch some of his videos only because i can't spend all day watching them all like some can, however i love listening to him and watching the wierd but funny animations that they contain. Even if i don't know the item he is speaking about, i can still laugh at what he says.

yeah but 90% of reviewers are biased...its true, nobody would dare say MW2 was shit because they would lose so much credibility with activision and the fanboys that its not in their financial interests

I think ZPs a breath of fresh air from the 'compelling, cinematic' BS that comes out of every IGN or gamespot review ever made

I'm sorry but Yahtzee is what is known as a critic and in a way a comedian I wish people would stop maing the mistake that he actually reviews games he doesn't do this he critises them for comedic value anyone who thinks they are reviews should either wake up or suffer some horrible fate.

Also just look at what people thought of Phsyconauts when he tried to review a game well PEOPLE HATED IT and he even said so in the next video.

I'm fairly certain Yahtzee has shown a distaste for catering or paying any attention to his fans...ever, so I'm going to go ahead and say that his review's aren't negative because we want them to be that way.
So I take it you missed the numerous reviews where he says "you guys complained when I mentioned the good stuff, so I'm going to trash it now" (paraphrased). I think it was the review right after Psychonauts or somewhere around there.

I'm damn certain he has addressed this before with a resounding "No" in an interview.

P.S. He's never on our forums, he isn't reading this.
Wrong. Considering that he has quoted forum posts on ExtraPunctuation.

Well, concerning most of his videos are about 5 minutes long, this would mean you are getting a minute review. That doesn't seem like a legitimate review to me at all. Of course, you've already stated that he spends most of his time on the episodes as an entertainer. So which do you think he is, entertainer or serious reviewer?
Newspaper reviews of movies take a minute to read and are based mostly on a star rating.
What's the difference?

How long does a review have to be before it becomes legitimate? What's the word count? Ebert and (the late) Siskel gave two word reviews, "thumbs up", and some people cared and still do care. A review doesn't have to be long. It doesn't have to rate the game in different categories. It can simply be a recommendation or lack thereof.
damn got there first but I am sure someone got in before that too.
