Neither, Yoshi is a species, not a name, as all those different colored dragon-like creatures are all called Yoshi's. Would be pretty stupid to give them all the same name.
It's pretty unanimous that Yoshi is a dinosaur. How effective could he be on all fours? I mean a Koopa could do pretty well on all fours because they're turtles. Yoshi is sort of like a cuter T-Rex.
However, I think the better question is "What is Birdo?" Because I have no idea what she is.

He can only breath fire when he has consumed the proper matter. That's quite a hindrance. Not to disagree with Yoshi's god but just seems to be quite a handicap. Be like being made susceptible to radiation poisoning and having your only natural source of light be a huge atomic bomb...Yoshemo said:

Why would he be a turtle? Turtles just walk back and forth on ledges and get jumped on. Occasionally they throw hammers and fly, but still!
