The question wouldn't arise for me because I'd succeed in killing him the first time. Honestly, I'm not bullshitting, I actually have the skills needed to successfully kill a person as a mercenary. Thank you CCF...
Anyway, assuming that the theoretical yet unlikely possibility of my failure would arise, then I'd probably just attempt in the same way, but have any flaws in my original plan patched and fixed so I'd kill him the second time around without fail.

I'd stalk him for a bit (i mean like a few hours not days) and when I get the chance posin him with my hidden blade just like Ezio, then walk off.
There's no real extenuating circumstances here. Here's this guy. He captures and tortures you. You survive. It's your job to kill him. Do you kill him? Well, what reason have you given us not to kill him?
If some mercenary tried to kill me, I'd probably do the same thing that Ryan did if I could. Depending on who hired me and why they wanted me to kill Ryan, I could have deserved to get my ass handed to me. In that case, I wouldn't blame Ryan for what he did.
But on the other hand, if Ryan is some terrorist or dangerous criminal or something along those lines, yeah, I'd kill him regardless of whether or not I'm still getting paid. Of course I'd learn from Ryan's mistake and go for something quick and efficient, and check to make sure that he's actually dead.

Do some Punisher shit were I convince him that his wife is cheating on him with his best friend so he kills them both, them reveal my plot to him. Oh, and I would have simultaneously robbed him of all of his money somehow. I'd cut off both his legs, and one of his arms. Then I'd hand him a gun with a single bullet to do as he would.

I would attach him to a car battery with VERY sharp crocodile clips, Via the testicles.
Then i would drill his kneecaps & break both his arms. Then attach electrodes to his body that cause him to pulsate to the beat to a rick roll, While i dance in front of him.

If I were a mercenary I would be a very professional one. If the bounty is still out on him I kill him quickly and efficiently, collect the money, and forget about him. If there is no bounty, I ignore him.
