And I worked there for a year, so I should know.

Depends, if he's already out the door, fuck that shit. I'd point out to the manager that someone grabbed the meal and ran for the door without paying.

If he stayed in the building, I would've taken it back.

take it back, can't risk getting in trouble just because it might make a child sad

Although as another option (yes i know you said only the 2) you could get the police, because its stealing, and try to get a 4 year old arrested, simply because that would be rather funny

Four year old kids can barely remember what they had for breakfast let alone that you took back his happy meal. I'm not risking my (albeit pathetic) job for a kid who won't remember what happened by the time he takes his afternoon nap.
This.

Also, when I was 4, I took a pack of M&Ms from a store. My mom noticed them when we got outside and made me go back in, apologize and give them back before a stern whoopin was delivered (back when you could still do that. Off topic a bit here, but I believe that's what's wrong with youth today).

The lady working the register said it was cute and that I could have them, and my mom said NO. That isn't how she was raising her kids.

I thank her for it everyday.

I'd let him have it, he's only 4 and doesn't know the difference between right and wrong yet..
No offense, but that is BS. It's the perfect time to teach right and wrong. What would you do? Let your kid be immune to laws and morals until puberty?

Good luck with that. lol

Let the kid have it. Who cares? I would be more concerned that no parent was in sight. It is a fucking cheese burger and fries. Let a kid be a kid.

Yeah, he didn't pay, and we're not running a charity here.

Though, if I'm limited to just those two options, and, say, not just taking it back and then bringing him to my manager, than where the hell am I?

I am not paid in karma.

Besides, if I gave out free food I could lose my job. I may really need my job, miserable minimum-wage notwithstanding.

I'd let him have the meal.

Why?

Because I would too busy quitting my job at McDonalds to stop him from eating it. Also, I'd be glad that the company took the $2 revenue hit due to my not stopping him.

If I, in this same situation, really wanted to keep my job at McDonalds for some reason, I'd probably just put a couple bucks from my wallet into the register.

edit-

Because by the time I realized what had happened he'd have probably walked a good bit off, or would even be outside. I couldn't be bothered just to get a couple bucks from some kid.

i'd take it back. i'm already in trouble with the boss, and i doubt he has a heart, so i'd probably lose my job. the kid can live without a happy meal, but i need a god damn job so he can deal with a bit of sadness. if he did get upset, he'd probably just go find his parents and tell them the story, and they'd buy him the happy meal, so he gets the meal either way, and i keep my job this way
