I say this knowing me I don't trust me enough to say that I would be a saint and return it... I would pick up some beer money then return it and just walk off... (Maybe taking the game card with me...)

I'd give it back, and if they give you a thank you tax, then all the better. If not, oh well, you'd want the same for you.

Check that theres noone around you, then put on some gloves so theres no fingerprints and steal everything in it and lay it back on the exact same spot. MISSION COMPLETE!

Well we will just have to agree to disagree.
I value money far too much to let it slip through my fingers and you have some serious moral fortitude.
Also, how the hell did you live on two minute noodles!? That's ridiculous!
Morals? Hell no. I just know how I've felt after having some douchebag steal my hard-earned money from my wallet. Damned if I want to be responsible for someone else feeling that way.

As for how I survived, well, it's amazing what the human body will tolerate if you pump it full of caffiene and nicotine. I doubt I could do such a second time though.

1) Search for identification
2a) If there is no form of identification, take cash and replace wallet where it was found
2b) If there is a form of identification, take most of the cash (or all of it and chuck a fiver in there) and hand it in to the cops
3) Spend money on video games

Everybody wins!
I get CoD4, they get their wallet (which is now considerably lighter) and the cops think i'm a good person =D

We had a lost and found area at the theater I used to work at. When we'd get a wallet turned into us. We would go through it just in a general interest sort of way (we would only do this if it was a slow day). I would advise anyone who finds a wallet to refrain from going through it at all costs. I've found some pretty disgusting shit in lost wallets in my time. Some of it has traumatized me for life. For everyone's benefit, I will not recount what I found.

why is this even needed to be discussed, return it untouched. the only options to consider are how to return it.. whether contact them directly if their id is in it or straight to the police
It needs to be discussed because some of us aren't as good of a person as you are, apparently.

I would (and have) take the cash and drop it off at the police station, let them get it back to the owner.

I'm proud to say that I've returned two wallets without taking any cash from either.

In regards to the OP, though, I definitely had fun looking through both of them. Losing their sense of privacy to satisfy my curiosity was my finders fee.

At first I would consider returning it with money et all, but then I would remember that in the same situation it would be down to my carelessness that I lost the wallet in the first place and so I would want to be taught a lesson...
