A few years ago I watched a special on self inflicted amputation. There are a group of people in the world who have a vision of themselves as amputees. They know exactly what they want cut off and how much. They try to get doctors to help them, but no medical professional (obviously) will perform such a drastic and unnecessary operation. They often take it into their own hands, by sticking their limbs into dry ice to give themselves frostbite and eventually gangrene. They call 911 and the hospital has no choice but to amputate their limbs. There were people in this report who had almost no mobility left at all and had to use motorized wheelchairs to get around. Psychiatrists diagnosed this as a rare form of obsessive compulsive disorder. Doctors said that these people needed therapy and antidepressants. A couple of the amputees said that their treatment was working and that without it, they might have lost even more body parts.

This brings me to my actual topic - sexual reassignment surgery. This is not a flame thread to bash gay people or transexuals. Please don't. They have every right to exist in the world in any way that they want to without hurting anybody else. I'm not even arguing whether sex change operations should be legal or not. (They should be.)

My question is whether or not these people need psychiatric help. It's one thing to prefer another gender identity. It's another thing entirely to cut off your genitals and reshape them into something else. With any surgery, there is risk of death and I would bet the death rate for sexual reassignment surgery is higher than zero.

A common thread among transexuals seems to be that they cannot stand having their genitals. So here's a quick test. Say you're a guy and woke up this morning without a penis, but a vagina. Or a woman who suddenly has a penis now. Would you risk your life with incredibly painful cosmetic surgery or would you find a way to accept your new body and live with it? And any transgender people / healthcare professionals, please feel free to tell me why I'm wrong and and a jerk. This is merely ignorance on my part (I don't know many people in real life) and I would genuinely like to hear differing perspectives.

I'd play around with it a bit to see if the female orgasm really is THAT good.

Then, I'd probably find a genie and wish for my penis back.

... What? Dude, you said that I randomly woke up with a vajayjay. Magic obviously exists. I can probably use magic to change it back.

If I woke up with boobs and a vajayjay, I'd first go to the police and then find out about getting them removed.

I also don't see how your reasoning couldn't be applied to all cosmetic surgery, say people who are disfigured but functional.

Well, for starters I'd freak the fuck out, but I'd probably live with it, mostly because I'm a pussy that is utterly terrified of surgery of ANY kind, though I'd certainly want to be who I really am again.

On the subject of transgenderism, I say if they want to change who they are physically then they should be allowed, but they should have to go through a lengthy period of psychiatric evaluation to ensure that it's not due to another solvable issue before any changes are made.

*slick, slick, slick, slick...*

OT: I'd probably just roll with it at first. Especially if I was still a guy in every other aspect of my body. I might eventually work on getting my old genitalia back, but I wouldn't have too much trouble with having the female set for a bit.

Yeah, me too.
Wouldn't everyone?

I mean, the question is what would you do AFTER that.
AKa.... the next month.

Like everyone has already said, see how good the female orgasm really is. Then I would probably live with it I guess, no need to risk a dangerous surgery that may or may not work. And hell maybe I'll wake up and magically have my junk again

First that. I might never get this opportunity again.

But seriously... I would probably opt for the surgery. My gender identity is definitely male and I'd like to have the genitalia to go along with that. But I do think a psychological evaluation is in order for that sort of thing, to make sure there isn't some outside force pressuring the person into doing this. Also, I'm kind of curious as to why transgendered people do this in the first, although I can't imagine something much worse than feeling like your stuck in the wrong kind of body.

I'd live with it, methinks.
If I got used to it, I wouldn't have to go through all the work of setting up for a surgery to turn me back.

I would freak the fuck out initially, then have the surgery. Sex is fun, and I doubt that many women would be impressed to find that I'm lacking the necessary machinery.

Well there is a theory that it isn't a psychological issue (sometimes) but a neural issue. We all have this thing called Proprioception (might not be the right spelling) which is the sense of your own body, how you know where all the parts of yourself are right now without having to look. It's how you can find your mouth with your eyes closed and why the cops used to use the "touch your nose" drunk test since alcohol screws it up.

Anyway they think it might be a case that the limb is physically there but according to the brain there is no limb there. I imagine it would be like knowing heart and soul that you should only have one arm but here's this whole other arm stuck to you. An alien appendage that isn't yours. It must be pretty fucked up.

OT: If it's a case that by the same magic I've always been a chick (like history is re-written) I would probably question my sanity and be very careful about who I told. If it's go to sleep guy, wake up woman and everyone else knows then... I think I'd try writing a book about it. Cash in and go on Oprah while I have ovaries so I can resist the urge to just punch her straight in the mouth.

Live with it. I don't identify with either gender specifically, feeling quite out of place in either 'role', so it seems that all I'm getting is a more versatile masturbation platform. Besides, I hate this thing. Look at it! Just look at it!

Well, I mean, supposing everything does work, then I guess having to put up with menstruation would be a negative... Actually, I need some specifics, here. Am I the same as a woman, hormonally? I mean, I'm already assuming I can achieve orgasm in the same way, so it isn't too much of a stretch to apply that logic to every part of the transformation- really, I am just a masculine woman, now. Hell, I'd stop growing facial hair at the rate I currently do, so I'd end up being a kinda masculine woman, with my girlish figure.

But I digress. I can't imagine having to live in a body that feels entirely separate to myself, and I can definitely see someone needing to alter it.
