Well there is a theory that it isn't a psychological issue (sometimes) but a neural issue. We all have this thing called Proprioception (might not be the right spelling) which is the sense of your own body, how you know where all the parts of yourself are right now without having to look. In any case, gender reassignment surgeries are (as yet) quite a long way from perfect. A neovagina is very different from a vagina.

Here's the thing, even no matter what we think, we can't know what we would do unless we were actually in that situation.

I think they do need help, but not the kind of help you're thinking of. They need acceptance. Transgender is a glitch in the brain that makes people feel uncomfortable with their gender, so they take on a different one. It's up to them if they want to go all the way.

If they can "cure" transgendered people through drugs, some might sign up. But I doubt it would work in the long run. Anyway, my point is, don't force them into it.
